I saw the USN A-7E launch as a Soviet Bear overflew my ship, the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) in 1984. The A-7 was carrying a sidewinder on the port rail and was set up as our Ready Alert 5 aircraft. We were deployed out in the western Pacific at the time. These aircraft were never appreciated for their fine handling qualities. All of the F-14's were flying elsewhere or below deck. I used to love watching the A-7's recover, as they seemed to land really fast when trapping aboard the carrier.
We had both F-8 and A-4. I do not think that either of those pilots would trade their planes for the A-7. The F-8 was supersonic and had both sidewinders and 20 mm's and the A-4 had a great maniverability and a tiny profile and was also used as the opponent in the Top-Gun school. Thanks for the history,
Greece still keeps them in service for one reason only. They are the only type of aircraft that can deliver a substantial payload of weapons on targets in Cyprus and deep in Turkish territory and have enough fuel to return to bases in mainland Greece or the island of Crete. They act like a mini Strategic Air Command for the territory's standards and they will continue to do so until the Eurofighters or the Rafales start being delivered.
Despite their old age (and I'm sure our American friends will agree on this) their navigation and targeting systems are extremely aqurrate even by modern standards.Their surviveability when properly escorted by air superiority fighters is excellent. They last saw action durring the first Gulf war in 1996 with devastating results for the Iraqi forces.
That old airplane is a fantastic CAS platform. It is a precision all weather attack aircraft and can carry many different kinds of munitions. Maximum bomb load is 6- 2000 lb (mk 84)!! Bad part was, they flew 'em air to air and over g'ed them on a regular basis resulting in cracks developing in the wings. Last of the US inventory went to the boneyard at DM in '92. Many were sold to other countries. I hope mine did. It was a good ship and landed at AMARC code 1...LOL.
Very cool to see those old A-7s, the USAF phased them out of service a few years before I joined up so I never saw any on the ramps. I hear the HAF have just retired all their A-7 squadrons, is this true? I guess it's time to do so, how many flight hours could those airframes still have in 2008?! I'm surprised to read the HAF is still flying F-4s! Not bad, Greece, not bad at all!
The A-7 is still in service, and it's planned to remain until 2012.
All those A-7's are also equipped with Litening pods for night strikes.
You will ask "why does that old thing remain in service?".
The answer is that there is no other such effective aircraft for CAS missions, besides the A-10 which the US are struggling to keep in service, and the Su-25 Frogfoot, which we'll never have.
All those new fighters (F-35, EF2000, Gripen) all pretty good for A-A missions, but not for CAS.
Rubbish. The F-35, Typhoon and Gripen are all multirole aircraft and can be used for either Air-to-Air and Close Air Support missions. And eventhough the A-7 was specifically developed for ground attack/CAS, it was so in a time when avionics/computers wheren't as sofisticated as today. So all of the above mentioned would out perform the A-7. Which, in itself, is a lovely aircraft.

In Europe only Greece and Portugal have used the A-7, but here they had many structural problems and some accidents. They have been replaced by the F-16 which also replaced the G-91. On Google Earth can be seen in Alverca. I only saw them flying when i was about 13. Great plane.
my old man flew jets like the T33, Fouga magistere, F86 sabre, Fiat G91, T38, A7 Corsair and F16. He says by far the one he misses the most is the A7.. Its like it had a soul. Its a 707 vs an Airbus. Airbus is remarkable in terms of engineering and state of the art avionics and safety but it lost the feel to the ones who fly it..apparently thats what the old man reckons: It was the last jet he flew and actually felt he was in control and not the other way around..Lucky u people still flying it..

Maybe the sexiest non-afterburner?
I think with thrust vectoring, canards, AESA, bigger engine, the F-8 would be a pretty sexy modern fighter still. :)
It's just me, but I would resemble this a/c to the m.g. sports car.
Great vid btw.
