1. Drive - disagree all you want, I loved it before the hipe. Loved the pace, loved the LA-at-night-neon-lights atmosphere, the 80's vibe, the awesome soundtrack, the silent manner in with the characters interact (which I didn't found silly, I found it more effective that the many dialogs they edited out while filming)
I haven't seen "The Artist", "50/50", or "Take Shelter" 10. "The Ides of March" 9. "Beginners" 8. "Hugo" 7. "Melancholia" 6. "Martha Marcy May Marlene" 5. "Road to Nowhere" 4. "The Guard" 3. "Drive" 2. "City of Life and Death" 1. "The Tree of Life"
my top 10: 10. tangled 9.johnny english reborn 8. the hangover 2 7. thor 6. rise of the planet of the apes 5. x-men first class 4. 50/50 3. pirates of the caribbean on stranger tides 2. sherlock holmes a game of shadows 1. Harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2
MY TOP 10 10. Super 8 9. Mission impossible ghost protocol 8. Arthur Christmas 7. War horse 6. The help 5. The Artist 4. Rise of the planet of the apes 3. HP DH part 2 2. Warrior 1. Midnight in paris
1. may be a huge surprise, but captain america. Really great protgonist who really just wanted to do good, obviously incredible acting from hugo weaving for the red skull, awesome action sequences, did dislike the ending but i just loved CA so much.
kristian why didnt you put ides of march in? im just saying you said in your review that it was one of your favorite movies of the year and it was kinda late in the year. just wondering.
My top 10: 10: Rio 09: Source Code 08: The Green Hornet 07: X-Men: First Class 06: Thor 05: Sucker Punch 04: Cowboys & Aliens 03: The Muppets 02: Immortals 01: Rise of the Planet of the Apes Wow!!!!! I mean WOW!!!! I didn't think i would like it much but i LOVED IT!!!!!! (i saw this before i ever saw the original with Charlton Heston) At first i thought it was going to be one of those heart-warming films but then it got so intense! I enjoyed every second of it!
dudes warrior was my fav all year. and i think drive is the worst movie of the year, i was looking forward to it and it sucked. the main character didn't have 25 lines of dialogue!!!!!
with nothing but remakes and sequels I felt this movie was very unique. It doesn't explain anything straight forward so I had long talks with my friends about this movie which is more than i can say for some others. I saw it twice in theaters once in IMAX. Zack Snyder is my favorite director [not necessarily the best]. Sexy Ladies with guns. can't wait for SUPERMAN
@RNcruivivar Suckerpunch? TERRIBLE!! The actions scenes were imaginery that is why it is so terrible. plus it has Vanessa Hudgens She is a magnet for bad films.
@RNcruivivar You should checkout my review of Suckerpunch on my movie review channel biguy617. It is actually on bliptv but the link is on my youtube channel. I put the film footage to a spicegirl song.
@captcrais101 In my defense I never said it was the best movie of 2011 just my favorite. Also in Alice in Wonderland they never said if "Wonderland" was real or not and they never explained it which is how i took Sucker Punch's action scenes. This year no other movie had me debate over a film as much as Sucker Punch which is why I ranked it #1 plus I'm a little bias since Zack Snyder directed it (sue me) btw tried to watch your review but can't find it
and yes where is drive? lots of people loved that, i HAVENT seen it! cause im too poor and busy lol! but yeah planet of the apes was epic, fav moment when he spoke for the first time! i never get into movies enough to comment when im watching but i literally said out loud, "no way" haha i was so stunned. great list not close to mine but great to see others opinions
fuck i hate uni and being in australia, i havent seen half these movies or even heard of half these movies =( dam it! and i youst to work at a movie store i love movies but i cant watch them much any more =(
I agree with both of you on your top movies. I love Apes and War Horse. Both made me, I know, cry, laugh and root for the animals. Who knew that animals didn't have to talk (for the whole movie if at all) in today's world for everyone to love it. Or maybe just me.
the planet of the apes 2 movie is going to be dased on the ppl who went to mars during the first movie and by the end of that they were lost in space so the 2nd one is there story of when they come back.
My #1 film of 2011 is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo... It is hard for me to explain why because it is a very complicated/complex film. So I will just stick with Rooney's performance. It was so good that I was almost in tears every time something bad happened to Lisbeth because she made me care for the character so much.
I don't agree that 50/50 is perfeclty balanced in genres. The comedy part was good and very funny but the drama part was way longer and way tougher. So I would call it a drama movie, all the way.
You know I use to only subscribe to jeremy only cuase I only need one review but I Like your Top ten Lists better then his so I'm going to subscribe to both of you guys have a happy new year.
Can't wait to get 50/50, Warrior, and Beginners in the mail from Netflix! Just saw X-Men: First Class the other day and really enjoyed it, and probably going to see War Horse tomorrow!
Drive is my favorite movie of the year because it just took me back to those old noir films kind of like Scorcese made.. It reminded me a lot of Taxi Driver, but it had enough to stand out on it's own, like the AMAZING soundtrack, the pink cursive lettering, the whole 150 lines of dialogue in the movie (actions speak louder than words), and the surprise moments. Girl With the Dragon Tattoo came in a close second to me just because I thought the actors fit the roles better than the original...
Planet of the apes actually was a bigger disapointment then hangover 2 it was stupid... After hearing so many good things i went and saw a very average film that deserved like a 6/10 even critics gave it 8s and 9s
great list guys! every choice makes sense. did you guys get to see Midnight In Paris or Attack the Block? I'm curious as to whether you guys liked those ones.
My favourite film of the year was definitely The Rise of the Planet of the Apes (and one of my all time favourites). This is I think the only film I've ever gone back to the cinema to see again, it makes me feel emotional just thinking about it. So exciting and dramatic and emotional - just brilliant, brilliant film. Loved it, and I probably would never have gone to see it if I wasn't subscribed to you guys, so thank you! Hope you both have fab Christmases!
1. Drive. I heard from u guys and Jeremy that this movie was at most parts just a boring art house film. But damn was i impressed by it. It was able to having these cool but not over the top action scenes + great performances from Gosling and Cranston + some of the best direction i've seen all year.
harry potter. the first movie I saw three times in theatres. the one movie I left feeling as though my childhood had passed (just graduated high school, now in uni.).
That is a powerful movie and my favorite movie of the year.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was my #1 pick because I thought it was going to be good, but it was so much better than I expected. There was a part that I didn't see coming and it really surprised me.
1. Super 8 2. Hugo 3. War Horse 4. The Adventures of Tintin 5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes 6. Warrior 7. X-Men First Class 8. Arthur Christmas 9. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol 10. Kung Fu Panda 2 I personally can't wait for the Hobbit to hit the big screen. :)
Great video! Here's my top 10 (of the 52 movies I saw) starting with number 1: Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Warrior, Hugo, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I Saw the Devil, Drive, The Help, X-Men: First Class, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Cowboys & Aliens. C&A is not a number one, but it's in my top ten for the year. The Last Circus and Robot were amazing as well. RotPotA was very good. A lot better than I was expecting.
So far, as of now, my top 5 favorite movies of 2011: 1. WARRIOR. 2. The Tree of Life. 3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. 4. X-Men: First Class. 5. Crazy, Stupid, Love.
My favorite movie of 2011 was X-Men First Class, because I'm a superhero geek, and it was really awesome to see my favorite comic series finally get the movie they deserve, especially after X-Men Or- no, I can't even bring myself to type it's name.
Hi guys, im from argentina so I kinda watch these films like 2 months after you do but I really trust your opinions and you convince me to watch things that i would probably never would have noticed so thanks! and well..I admit i have a little ellis crush
Well yeah. Serkis was really the only good thing about the movie. Everything else was extremely underwhelming, and didn't really get me captivated. The parts with Malfoy (don't remember the actor's name) were just plain stupid as he played it up too much.
Don't get me wrong, not a BAD movie, just not the best in my opinion.
Midnight in Paris. 50/50 and the Descendants came in real close, but Midnight In Paris had everything I wanted. Much like 500 days of summer and eternal sunshine it was a very realistic and relate able about relationships. I loved it's themes of nostalgia, something that EVERYONE has. All the performances were magnificent and the script was tight and brilliant. I loved it.

theres still a lot of movies i need to see but hands down my favorite movie this year is Drive, i loved everything about it great soundtrack fantastic directing its a very basic story but its just so well made and a treat to watch my 2nd favorite film is War Horse i just watched it today really liked it a lot and it almost made me cry great film but i didnt care too much for the directing in the beginning but it got a lot better after the first 20 minutes. my 3rd favorite is Moneyball or Win Win
10. War Horse 9. Cave of Forgotten Dreams 8. Melancholia 7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 6. Midnight in Paris 5. Hugo 4. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy 3. Drive 2. The Tree of Life 1. The Artist. Schmoes, and anyone else that hasn't, see The Tree of Life and The Artist because they are such controversial films, it's good to know where you stand when you talk movies with someone. Also, they are quite different movies from the regular norm in society, which is nice for once.
Another Earth is my number one because it just blew me away. Flat out blew me away. It had great directing, great writing, great acting, and just a great moral underlining. I'm so glad it won Sundance, and it definitely deserves more praise than it gets. I love Another Earth.
My top 10 of 2011: 1. Another Earth 2. Drive 3. Super 8 4. Melancholia 5. Take Shelter 6. The Tree of Life 7. Rise of the Planet of the Apes 8. Sucker Punch 9. Red State 10. Harry Potter 7.2
My favorite movie of the year was the tree of life. Many people thought it was boring as hell, I thought it was a beautifully shot, enigmatic film which was entirely about a person's meditation on life. And that person is Terrence Malick, who reminds me much of the late & great Stanley kubrick. Job wll done.
Man, there are still a LOT of movies I need to see this year (Warrior, 50/50, Drive, X-Men First Class), but the ones I've seen have been great for the most part. My top 3 are the only ones I'm really sure about right now, and here it is:
1. Mission Impossible: GP
2. Deathly Hallows Part 2
3. Rise of the Apes
1 and 2 was really hard for me, but I picked MI 4 over Potter because I knew Potter would be great; MI 4 really blew me away in all areas.
@CinematicGalaxy cont. However, I grew up with Harry Potter (books and movies), so seeing this final film was a powerful experience. To be fair, though, if I combined both Deathly Hallows films then I would pick that over Mission Impossible 4. As for Rise of the Apes, that movie was just incredibly well made. The story was well structured, it never lost direction. You care about the characters. Top that off with Andy Serkis as Caesar and you have a great movie.
Top 5 for me are: Harry Potter, Warrior, Super 8, 50/50, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
I grew up with Harry Potter and the conclusion was incredibly strong, such a great way to end a chapter of my childhood. Warrior surprised me as well as a great underdog story. Super 8 captured my childhood Spielberg favorites, I thought it was great. 50/50 surprised the hell out of me, made me cry towards the end more than most films. And Apes was a huge surprise too, thought it was going to suck.
1. Drive 2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes 3. Super 8 4. Rango 5. X-Men: First Class 6. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol 7. Source Code 8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II 9. Crazy, Stupid, Love 10. Kung Fu Panda 2 unfortunately I haven't seen Warrior, Arthur Christmas, War Horse, Hugo, 50/50, The Ides of March, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, We Bought a Zoo (and a lot of movies, that might be good) yet.
I still haven't seen mission impossible so it's not gonna be on here
1. Harry potter. I've seen every movie in the theaters and it's one of the few franchises in which every movie was good. This movie was the best way to end it everything.
2. X men. I only went to see it because my friends didn't wanna see anything else but I was blown away by how good it was
3. Rise of the planet of the apes- I went to see it because we didn't really have anything else to do and I expected it to be shit but it
Like Kristian, Rise of the planet of the Apes is my #1 movie of the year. Its been the one movie that I constantly still think about all the time. My #2 would be the Muppets...... all I can say is I Just loved this movie. It was generally a great movie and the nostalgia of it all made me proud. Personally for me it was the funniest movie of the year.
# 3- Mission Impossible 4....... It was basically the perfect action film. The only thing was the villain was just generic lol.
@zonemystery I agree with you completely. I just got Apes on bluray and after rewatching it again its all I can think about. Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Muppets are my two favorites this year and now two of my favorites of all time. I still need to see Mission Impossible.
My list is in a response, but I had the same number 1 pick as you guys! Ellis, I also love Beginners, it is #3 on my list as well, and Harloff, X-Men was awesome! It's lower on my list, but I really liked it! -ThatMovieNerd
10. Kung Fu Panda 2 9. Source Code 8. Horrible Bosses 7. Sherlock Holmes 2 6. Limitless 5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt.2 4. Captain America: The First Avenger 3. Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol 2. X-Men: First Class 1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
@SinisterSkyline Not in America, was released here this summer and it is why Plummer is nominated for Golden Globe, he couldnt be nominated if it was released in 2010

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; Cowboys & Aliens. C&A is not a number one, but it's in my top ten for the year. The Last Circus and Robot were amazing as well. RotPotA was very good. A lot better than I was expecting.

My favorite movie of 2011 was X-Men First Class, because I'm a superhero geek, and it was really awesome to see my favorite comic series finally get the movie they deserve, especially after X-Men Or- no, I can't even bring myself to type it's name.

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2- perfect way to end the franchise
2. X-men first class- it makes me want to rewatch the other X-men movies
3. Rise of the Planet of the apes- I didn't think I would like it but god wa it epic!
4. The Help- I haven't cried so much in a movie in a while
5. The Muppets- I laughed so hard and the cameos were awesome
awvidfan123 2 months ago
Forgot my list lol
1. Planet of the Apes-Did not expect it to be that damn good, and Andy Serkis rules
2. The Help-Heartwarming, historical, and just all around good-Bryce Dallas Howard rocks
3. X Men First Class-X Men fanatic, always, and this was the best of all imo
4. Haven't seen MI yet, but I know I will love it
5. Lincoln Lawyer-These are the M Mcconaughey roles I prefer; nothing golden or anything like that, but still an enjoyable movie
I still need to catch up on 2011 movies:)

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the most overrated movie of the year
overdrive360 2 months ago
@overdrive360 In your opinion of course
schmoesknow 2 months ago
@schmoesknow

IDaCashman 2 months ago
My favorite movie of the year was the tree of life. Many people thought it was boring as hell, I thought it was a beautifully shot, enigmatic film which was entirely about a person's meditation on life. And that person is Terrence Malick, who reminds me much of the late & great Stanley kubrick. Job wll done.
theeab1993 2 months ago
Man, there are still a LOT of movies I need to see this year (Warrior, 50/50, Drive, X-Men First Class), but the ones I've seen have been great for the most part. My top 3 are the only ones I'm really sure about right now, and here it is:
1. Mission Impossible: GP
2. Deathly Hallows Part 2
3. Rise of the Apes
1 and 2 was really hard for me, but I picked MI 4 over Potter because I knew Potter would be great; MI 4 really blew me away in all areas.
CinematicGalaxy 2 months ago
@CinematicGalaxy cont. However, I grew up with Harry Potter (books and movies), so seeing this final film was a powerful experience. To be fair, though, if I combined both Deathly Hallows films then I would pick that over Mission Impossible 4. As for Rise of the Apes, that movie was just incredibly well made. The story was well structured, it never lost direction. You care about the characters. Top that off with Andy Serkis as Caesar and you have a great movie.
CinematicGalaxy 2 months ago
Top 5 for me are: Harry Potter, Warrior, Super 8, 50/50, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
I grew up with Harry Potter and the conclusion was incredibly strong, such a great way to end a chapter of my childhood. Warrior surprised me as well as a great underdog story. Super 8 captured my childhood Spielberg favorites, I thought it was great. 50/50 surprised the hell out of me, made me cry towards the end more than most films. And Apes was a huge surprise too, thought it was going to suck.

The only thing was the villain was just generic lol.
zonemystery 2 months ago
@zonemystery I agree with you completely. I just got Apes on bluray and after rewatching it again its all I can think about. Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Muppets are my two favorites this year and now two of my favorites of all time. I still need to see Mission Impossible.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes would be one because of the dialogue and care you developed for the Apes
Source Code would be one because no other movie had a concept like that and again I developed a care for the main character
Not sure if these are my top 2 but definetly in my top 5. Thanks for the list, Cannot wait for top 10 worst movies of 201 :)

Oh my god, I cant do a top ten but my top three are Hugo, Planet of the apes, and number one Harry Potter.
HP because after reading all the books and watching the films all these years it ended as perfect as it could have.
I liked Apes because I so want to see what will happen and I'm totally in love with Ceasar.
Hugo, The 3D was incredibly impressive like you said, and the story captivating.
I'm going to leave before I get emotional.
