Songwriting is indeed a lost art. Nobody in your generation puts out anything interesting. Just three or four chords over and over again. Ever hear of a bridge? Listen to songs by Jimmy Webb, Joni Mitchell, Lennon and McCartney, Billy Joel, etc. and find out how to write something more than the little ditties sung by the blonde on Friends. Learn some harmonic depth, please. Music is dying.

Perhaps she (and other songwriters) do it for the sheer satisfaction it brings to them. Granted, nowadays artists sound very similar and there is little variety. This may not be your cup of tea, but if you have passion for what you're doing, and if that makes you utterly content, then do what you want. No one says you have to like it or compare it to previous generations. This is what Julia writes because...it makes her happy. Let's let todays musicians decide who their influences are

It's a term that goes WAY back to the day when music was still recorded on vinyl LP's, back in the early to mid 1980's I believe.

Now-a-days most recording artists will just re-release a CD with "bonus tracks" that back in the day would just wind up on an EP if they didn't make it on the LP....or be saved for the B-sides of singles or put on a later album.
