I had a Golf before, but now I drive a BMW 1. Okay, to be honest, both slow cars (Golf 1.9 tdi, BMW 116i), but as you can see in this vid (he plays a bit first with the BMW), BMW offers so much more driving pleasure. Their marketingproposition: sheer driving pleasure, is thus not a lie.

Now that both cars have been out for a few years, we know which one has become the cult car. Upper end Bimmers ARE nice, but 1 series is just fine as a hair dressers car... sorry, I mean stylist :)

R32 = Underperforming, overpriced car.

For R32 money you can get an EVO or an STI which eats the R32's lunch, wet or dry. Never understood the appeal of the R32 beyond fanboy'ism. And a nice exhaust note.

I've yet to see a 600hp 10 second 1/4 mile bmw 135. I've seen plenty of EVO's like that. they're are even 1000hp evos. Mod-for-mod the EVO owns the 135. The EVO also owns the 135 around a track. Do you know what an LSD is? The 135 has none while the EVO has 3.

nice try. But this track is well, unsuitable! May be you can have fun all day by driving around sideways but if you really wanna see the true limits of a car try recording a vid in a true (and dry?)track? England has a a lot. A great one is in Serres greece believe it or not! Bumpy enough to assess the suspension, high speed enough to assess the power, s turns, double apex turns!It's great for cars just like this. There the bmw (130i) is wayyy ahead of any golf,,,always on dry tarmac...

Its top gears little brother called Fifth Gear. The guy driving is called Tiff, who I think used to be a F1 driver. Its similar to Top Gear, just not as funny . But Tiff is a better driver and and a better car reviewer than the three yobs on Top gear.

@strathpol Tiff lacked that controversy and entertainment factor that the three on Top Gear have and therefore Fifth Gear getting cut had nothing to do with whether Tiff is a better car reviewer or not. Fifth Gear was a dreadfully boring show but it actually reviewed cars that people buy. Top gear is pure entertainment (and an awesome show!) and therefore will bring in the big bucks for the BBC.

The R32 is very good, but what is clear that the bmw is much more fun on his rear traction ... Best time can the R32 because it is 4x4 traction, but if you want to feel at the wheel myself I am inclined toward the 130I

The word is 'wheel drive', traction is something else! R32 is not 4x4 but 'all wheel drive' aka '4 wheel drive', if you know cars you would know the difference.

You guys are wrong. The Golf R32 hammered the Beemer on Top Gear's track in the dry. Jeremy Clarkson test drove the both of them back to back and unequivocally stated that the R32 is the better car and not only that but it was better built. The Beemer after he drove it round the track said the dash kept flashing warnings lights about failed this and broken that whereas the Golf didn't. Don't believe me? Check out the video is on youtube. BMW= Overpriced rubbish! U cud get a top scooby 4 less!

the only reason the R32 wins in the video is because of the all wheel drive. On a dry surface the result would be completely different. The BMW is made with rear wheel drive with the purpose to bring more excitement to the driver. The R32 is just for people who can't afford the Audi S3 which is a great sports hatchback. The 130i is for having fun. No other hatchback has that rear wheel drive enjoyment. 130i is much better

The VW has an extra 200CC and is AWD, but it slower in a straight like, so yeah, it would win on a damp track like that. I happen to own a 130i and have dusted off a few R32's on the motorway.
