  • ...Why didn't they put this in vista?!?!

  • @Goldspar1 The reason is that the effects you see there were built by a very small group of newly hired designers/developpers without the knowledge or consent of Bill Gates & Steve Ballmer. When that build was shown @ winhec 2k3 Bill Gates & Steve Ballmer went batshit (they hate bling and believe that a good GUI is one that is as ugly, plain, dull and boring as possible) and fired the people who built it, then they scrapped the whole thing (that's why the Longhorn -> Vista reboot happened).

  • @Goldspar1 (continues). After that the group of designers and coders who got fired went and took on different parts of the Linux GUI (they did this as a retaliation against M$), with the one who coded the wobbly windows effect becoming part of the group of people who built the original compiz compositor (that 's before compiz quinn and beryl).

  • @Goldspar1 because they realized it was a bad idea. It may look cool at the first 5 minutes. Then is very annoying.

  • That windows rotate is cute before end :D

  • Linux is just better.

  • It looks cool but if you look at task manager while it plays video it takes a ton of CPU. Bad thing. Good thing they stopped longhorn in the first place.

  • good stuff but useless iCandy

  • This is still possible to do with the current dwm. The API's are there. Someone just needs to write a program for dwm to do it. Look at the program switcher. They made an expose running on dwm,

  • @NitroGadvRules Unfortunately, the API (as far as I could see) isn't there. i.e., third-party programs can't access the composited images/textures of the windows, or control the decorations (titlebar). They even say on MSDN that the API does not allow the creation of something like Flip3D.

  • I want my fucking wobbly windows! :(

  • Windows still cant do this now lol

  • R.I.P. Windows Longhorn

  • If you listen carefully you'll realize that what she says is this was a conceptual presentation of what they wanted graphically for Longhorn. So this is a "Concept" stage demonstration. Since they couldn't have had either an ATI or Nvidia GPU driver for Longhorn. This was most likely running in a game interface on Win XP. Not actually on the Longhorn build system itself.

Otherwise, M$ wouldn't have been the last OS to release a compositing engine after OS-X and Linux! ....in Beta no less! haha

  • Windows had compositing in Windows 2000 and XP.

  • Protip: What you say will be respected a lot more if you stop saying stupid old shit like M$. Other than that, get the fuck out.

  • Microsoft has been referred to as M$ since the early 90's and you obviously have read it before & understood it or you wouldn't be taking such a offense to it!

But whether you like that term or not, I don't see you refuting the fact that Microsoft was last to implement a compositing engine in it's OS. Therefore bringing up some old video of proposed technology, only presented once and not implemented for 5yrs, proves nothing!

And yeah... you scare me. "Get the fuck out"! lol ;-P ..not!!!

  • hmmm something must be written in Regedit (somewhere in explorer) or in taskbar / open progs =)

  • i have wobbly windows, it's really funny to play with

  • NOOO! Longhorn Again. I Have longhorn and its to old. The reason it has never came out because the operating system what way to flexible. I was lucky to get a copy of it and it did nothing then make so many problems!

Trying to get something like that for Vista GUI Kernel Takes to long and no one has any source codes to make it for vista only Microsoft has that!

  • what the hec?

  • WHAT THE.....

  • I love that this predates Compiz. Suck it, Linux Youths.

  • Lol, who that actually uses Linux would run Compiz anyway? I don't run Linux for the GUI effects....

    (although I still use kde3.5.2)

  • yeah but they never released it, so suck it.

  • @NotASocialCommentary

to bad it still doesn't come in windows... o well back to my cool effects in Linux...

  • @f22k221 You mean with that bloated joke you call xorg? Yeah, good luck with that. You so much as do a system update, and you realize it could break every shitty driver you have on there, right?

  • @NotASocialCommentary oh sorry didn't realize that you reply back... i was to busy playing with my cool effects..

  • @NotASocialCommentary I've installed a Linux system with Xorg and gone through a system update at least 4 times, and all the effects have worked amazing. They even have wobbly windows, which never did make it into Vista. And it takes under 10% cpu almost all the time.

  • @NotASocialCommentary ...but in the end, you never ghot it.

    ;)

  • @NotASocialCommentary Compiz is way different to DCE. DCE only makes it more computer-effective to make desktop effects, Compiz allows desktop effects in Linux.

Windows and Mac fanboys - they make me lol.

  • WOBBLY WINDOWS OMG!

  • IT'S A COMPIZ FUSION COPY!!! XD jokes... or IS IT!!!? :P

  • 1:03 What the heck!?!? Is that a joke!??!?

  • Sad lock's awesome

  • awesone where i can download windows longhorn concerpt?

  • You can't. Thats why it's a 'concept'. If you want to download this specific build, you can't because it never leaked :(

    If only Microsoft finished Longhorn.

  • i suppose it was finished off as windows server 2003 my bro who works in microsoft told me tat

  • it is leaked :-)

    TPB!!!

  • yes.

  • this only proves that the claim that winvista copied osx is bogus

  • tell me something does that looks like the high rendered video they showed us in PDC 2003 or does looks like a progam that only takes like a screen of the desktop and moves it all arround like if it had effects (its like a prank soft i had back for the 98 it worked just like that)i had that chance to test that shit u needed to click a button or type a code to make thatit started doing this, very nice well when i tryed to use the windows with the effects it didnt let me just an efect not real UI

  • Uh, this was never released, so how could you have possibly tested it?

  • One... u can get this in pirate bay (torrents?)¬¬ yes u can... Two... I personally had the oportunity to test build 4033 in a conference, it was running this same program, efect, whatever. It was being presented by microsoft developers

  • Oh really? Give me a link via a pm.

  • go find it yourself... theres something called google ... and a magic site called piratebay ¬¬

  • Ha! Oh really? In other words, you have no link? It doesn't exist? And you said they could move the windows around, but they did in the video.

  • YES THERE ARE FREAKING links.. JUST SEARCH FOR THEM!!.1 ITs Ilegal to give you a torrent link to download it youtube would ban my account for doing so 2 JUST F((&!& use google to find the freaking link..3 Im not going to give it to you because im not going to do the FU#/%/ hard job of finding it.. also I never FREAKING said i had the "LINK" to download it I SAID I TESTED IT IN A DEV CONFERENCE but i know there must be a torrent or something because a friend of mine downloaded and tested inhis PC

  • omg MS copied compiz from linux =o

  • That was earlier than Compiz. Compiz is a clone of THAT!

  • so linux copied win?

  • yes. The Beryl/COMPIZ Team was impressed from this, and then they made COMPIZ.

  • Wow so when Linux does this, it's totally cool and bad ass and uber. When Windows implements this before it goes mainstram in Linux, all of a sudden it's horrible. And this is better than any Linux effects I've seen thus far. People are so unfair towards Microsoft, for some reason they think they're evil. >.>

  • Then concept goes back at least to the 1980's. There just wsn't enough RAM for 20 years.

  • IMO - they made windows looks like distro on UNIX (A win look linux distro).

Then APPLE made OSX, n then they were so shocked that they gone in panic mode n wasted everything.

  • in one way wow... but what a heap of crap... i support microsoft and all but id like to see a usefull video of Longhorn.. not sum spinning windows and pictures and RED SQUARES!! ??

  • the prove that windows vista is not a copy of mac os! :)

  • well... it's hard to explain but Longhorn (up to build 4094) and Vista (builds 5000-6000) are in fact different things xD

  • @fysnake It is, this was Longhorn. Not PISSTAKE/Vista.

  • @fysnake Longhorn was an alpha and still looked like XP.

Vista was even buggier than Longhorn.

  • @TwiIightSparkle Actually, Longhorn was even buggier than Vista. It's the fact that it had stuff Vista didn't, (like this,) that makes it so worthwhile.

  • TheTutorial, it was before Beryl...

  • I understand that. I don't mean it was rip off in the way you think. I meant that its probably took alot of system resources to run it. Thanks for the response.

  • >I meant that its probably took alot of system resources to run it.

They even opened Tesk Manager for people like you. It didn't consume CPU.

  • i'd say thats useless, and not a great effect. i would like one that would be functional as well, like the linux 3d cube. they say apple had it first as a 3rd party program, but linux was the first to integrate it. they should make something like that for windows, except like the one in the lhr promo video.

  • yep that's microsoft they gave it up for the bs band-aid vista

  • 2003... This is the evidence, that XGL effects are not completely from the Linux Community.

  • Someone needs to get these effects in XGL yesterday.

  • 0_0... XGL has the "Inertia" effect, but I haven't seen any of these others in it.
