Why does everyone say Spike died? According to the creator, for all we know he could just be sleeping. Still, what an ending. This anime is in the realm as things like AKIRA and Gundam.
Because that wouldn't be as interesting of an ending. Spike kills Vicious, the only reason he's still around after Julia dies, then what? Just goes back to Jet and they do what? Most people consider the ending better if Spike dies, but if you don't want that it doesn't have to be that way. So I think the ending is fine the way it is, but the story makes more sense if you see it as Spike dies.

@MrTsorge The Red Dragon aren't just "evil." They're a crime syndicate, but they aren't cartoon villains who commit crimes for the hell it. Seeing as how succession works, Spike would also be the current leader. The entire point of the end of Cowboy Bebop is that Spike essentially CHOSE to die, because as he says, "it's just a dream." He decided ending the conflict with Vicious, likely dying himself, was more important than Faye/ Jet. There's no need for episodes after 26.

@Slimcognito2012 Agreed. Spike has had to deal with his criminal past and I think because of his bad past, he's not concerned about his own life. He takes risks because he's died once before and that all he can do is try to atone for his sins (Albeit, he's still not the nicest guy). In the end, I think he dies alongside vicious, helping to end one of the largest syndicates in the universe (Whole series is based around syndicates controlling the galaxy)

We are shown in the very first episode that Spike goes to the indian man to find out where the bounty responsibile for using Red Eye is going to be at. Jet scoffs at Spike's method of obtaining the information but it turns out to be useful because Spike fights him.
Then we are shown in the movie, which is Canon, that it is the same indian man who nurtures spike and talks to him about death.

I couldn't make out the animation of the blood at that moment. when he's walking down the stairs does he have his arm over his midsection like he's grabbing his ribs because of the damage he received during the shoot out?Or is it because vicious sliced him?

any story postmodern will include alot of the ambiguity and emotion of this ending. However, Cowboy Bebop managed to turn a depressing story of irredeemable crime, vengeance, and fear, into a story so comical, so awesome, that I still can't help rewatch it, 10 years later

Spike is so bad-ass. You saw how beat up he was at the end? Took a couple of bullets to the arm, face and leg and he STILL beats Vicious. Half his face was covered in blood, that's how damaged he was. #1 Bad-ass Anime character.
One thing I really liked about this anime, was that spike's death made me forget that he's just a character. I genuinely felt emotion at his death, and his love for julia, and it still feels like someone actually died when I watch this. For an anime, that's really impressive to get those kinds of emotions going, especially with an ANIMATED character, not someone portrayed live-action

Well...the truth is the recent anime that have come out just can compare to these...such as..Naruto...bleach..and while Inuyasha is good as well and just is old it dosent give that western feeling...for example ill never forget the battle in the first episode were bebop kicks the criminals ass ill never forget the look on spikes face when he looked in the moldy refigirator...-old- hellsing Trigun and this priceless...i also like hellsing ova now thats a badd ass anime its unlike bleach n Narut
and another note i find it funny how people always say 'forget your past because you can't change it and it doesn't matter' but in this show spike's past was always haunting him and he needed to be free from it.... hmm.... i guess in some cases you do need to take care of your past before you can move on and be free
i think people don't give this show the credit it deserves. it's always "OH BLEACH, NARUTO, OH INUYASHA" don't get me wrong those are great shows as well, but in my opinion they don't compare to this. it had romance, comedy, action, and some episodes made you think. which is why i guess some people don't appreciate this show, people don't want to think when they are being entertained. and even though the ending was sad it ended perfectly. we will miss you spike spiegal

@saltireBLACKOPS Shinichirō Watanabe, has never confirmed it one way or the other, but honestly, if you look at the scene as it is, it makes more sense for him to be dead. The shooting star symbolizes a fallen warrior, and the tone of the scene, as well as the music, fit better under the assumption that Spike died. If you chose to believe he survived, that's fine, but you should avoid stating he's alive when that's not confirmed.
@Bttscks he was shot in the arm and the knife went in his arm he passed out he did not die but you have a right for your own opinion and i respect that and your ability to spell unlike others that bash me for no reason. and plus he could survive from that gun fight if he survived the fall from the church

Artistically speaking, it just seems to work better under the assumption he died. I could be wrong, I'm just saying that it was never officially confirmed either way, and personally I feel like the series works better if he dies in the end.
@saltireBLACKOPS Spike is dead. It's the only think left for his character after losing Julia. Any other ending destroys the poignancy of the entire series.

any story postmodern will include alot of the ambiguity and emotion of this ending. However, Cowboy Bebop managed to turn a depressing story of irredeemable crime, vengeance, and fear, into a story so comical, so awesome, that I still can't help rewatch it, 10 years later

I think if spike hadn't died this anime would NOT have been as good. He HAD to die. It fucking MADE the anime. It was seriously one of the best animes I have EVER seen and was perfect all around, anyone who doesnt get it I feel sorry for because it is one of the best you'll ever see.

Spike is so bad-ass. You saw how beat up he was at the end? Took a couple of bullets to the arm, face and leg and he STILL beats Vicious. Half his face was covered in blood, that's how damaged he was. #1 Bad-ass Anime character.

One thing I really liked about this anime, was that spike's death made me forget that he's just a character. I genuinely felt emotion at his death, and his love for julia, and it still feels like someone actually died when I watch this. For an anime, that's really impressive to get those kinds of emotions going, especially with an ANIMATED character, not someone portrayed live-action

Well...the truth is the recent anime that have come out just can compare to these...such as..Naruto...bleach..and while Inuyasha is good as well and just is old it dosent give that western feeling...for example ill never forget the battle in the first episode were bebop kicks the criminals ass ill never forget the look on spikes face when he looked in the moldy refigirator...-old- hellsing Trigun and this priceless...i also like hellsing ova now thats a badd ass anime its unlike bleach n Narut

and another note i find it funny how people always say 'forget your past because you can't change it and it doesn't matter' but in this show spike's past was always haunting him and he needed to be free from it.... hmm.... i guess in some cases you do need to take care of your past before you can move on and be free

i think people don't give this show the credit it deserves. it's always "OH BLEACH, NARUTO, OH INUYASHA" don't get me wrong those are great shows as well, but in my opinion they don't compare to this. it had romance, comedy, action, and some episodes made you think. which is why i guess some people don't appreciate this show, people don't want to think when they are being entertained. and even though the ending was sad it ended perfectly. we will miss you spike spiegal

Cowboy Bebop is absolutely amazing - so you are more than alright with telling us your opinion on it and why people some may not like the show. Also: I wish more people appreciated the show. :P

@saltireBLACKOPS Shinichirō Watanabe, has never confirmed it one way or the other, but honestly, if you look at the scene as it is, it makes more sense for him to be dead. The shooting star symbolizes a fallen warrior, and the tone of the scene, as well as the music, fit better under the assumption that Spike died. If you chose to believe he survived, that's fine, but you should avoid stating he's alive when that's not confirmed.
The movie takes place during the series, btw.

@saltireBLACKOPS I didn't mean in terms of... he wouldn't have been able to survive. I mean that the tone of the scene, the themes of the series and just how everything played out. Artistically speaking, it just seems to work better under the assumption he died. I could be wrong, I'm just saying that it was never officially confirmed either way, and personally I feel like the series works better if he dies in the end.
