Chip Robinson was lucky to walk away from this one after the left rear tire exploded at top speed on the long backstaight leading to the infamous dip at Road Atlanta. He suffered only a chipped shoulder blade. I was standing on the fence at the point of impact and it seemed more like a plane crash.
His team mate Geoff Brabham also crashed spectacularly about 15 laps later in the dip after a similar rear tire failure. The extreme downforces generated by these cars destroyed tires quickly.
@abarth59 I was sitting over at the esses when I heard this crash. Once the yellow was full course we walked in the direction of the huge sound on the back straight and saw someone walking to their car with a Nissan GTP wing endplate. I was happy to see Chip get out of the car under his own power and give a thumbs up to Brabham as he drove past, even if he was laying on the ground.
@S14VH45 I'm not really sure i couldn't get a good look at the car before it was mangled up in the crash. I just remember the distinctive paint and body scheme on the car, resembling the R92CP
not sure which one is his luckiest escape- this or that nasty Riverside one he was involved in once

@killersinwar This weekend was one that really helped finish off the GTP series. The Mazda team was gone after this due to a crash.
The Nissan team lost both cars here and never had enough parts to really field the team properly again.
