  • *places a diagram of Testosterone and Estrogen under the mistletoe* there Testosterone and estrogen under the mistletoe. Put them together and you have love!

  • advance merry xmas to everyone

  • 12 people who disliked this are "arsoles".

  • In our home, this video has become as much an annual holiday tradition as the Grinch and the Muppets/John Denver Christmas album.

  • poor christmas tree with lots of chemicals and molecules. . lol

  • im gonna suggest this to my chemistry teacher! :D i'll even tell her to check out this vid.

  • lololo 4:33 lolololololol I SEE A RAPIST!!!

  • Lol at "G hayche B"

  • I'd put on menthol, neopentane, and copper sulfide

  • Best video ever!!!!

  • As usual, Professor Poliakoff's molecule wins the day

  • I love these videos ^^

Probably since I'm such a nerd

  • Will be borrowing this idea for Christmas 2011, Keep up the good work,

    Best Regards from the Chem. Dep't. at the University of the West Indies {Trinidad Campus}

  • LOL, arsole... you might as well make BARF, bastardane, constipatic acid, cummingtonite, DAMN, DEAD and fucK. :-DDD

  • next year is 2011 prof :P

anyway, merry (late) xmas to all of you :D

  • Am I the only one who has to snicker at the name Arsole? xD

  • Hahaha, GHB, I know what that is.

  • I'm so torn, I love all you guys and Chemistry but I also Love Physics. but this was a fantastic video!!

  • this is so....wonderful!! i would have had put phenolphthalein onto it...another monster molecule...bcause it was kind of...epic in the earlier lessons in chemistry we had in school. now we haven't that teacher anymore..but..well good reminding..

  • Some students at my old school did this for their IB Chemistry teacher. He was not amused. He needed them for our lesson.

  • WIGGLY GIGGLIES!

  • Sam looks very cute that day..

  • Lol, arsole.... arse hole. Lol, I need to grow up.

  • I just noticed they are almost ALL of them are organic compounds =)

    Thumbs up/5* for organic chemistry!

  • NI3 ftw

  • I think I know what decorations I'm putting on my Christmas tree this year....

    My word, I'm a geek.

  • Nice video ... you guys forgot C8H10N4O2 (Caffeine)... pretty important nowdays xD

  • I would construct Tetrahydrocannabinol C21H30O2

Its the best molecule in whole chemistry :))

  • @jokubelis

    Your Dead Right

that might get us all in the spirit

  • the asian girl has the best tshirt ever

  • @Pikachuisblue

yes but it's scary. that all we are is an extremely complicated mixture of millions of different compounds

  • ARSOLE. LMFAO

    SO MUCH WIN

  • ghb? you got some balls.

    bam!

    5 stars.

  • :'( A touching Chemistry Tree.

    Atoms bless you.

  • I thought the same thing - I love how they delicately did not explain what that was in there ;)

  • I was like wtf wheni heard he made ibuprofen :P

Well atleast im happy their gonna start talkin about molecyles.

  • wonderful chemicals on the tree

  • wonderful video. makes me cheery. and i can't wait to see lots of molecular videos!

  • 5 Stars for "Arsole"!

  • They made one at our school's chemistry lab too, but the students that made the molecules just put sonething together... Under a practical lecture where all the other students were bussy, I took a look, and I didn't find ONE real molecule... And they are chemistry students!

  • These guys love chemistry so much... Come to my school. Our chemistry and physics departments are in serous trouble of getting cut due to low enrollment =(

  • is there an exact color code for building those?

    ps go rocket fuel!!

  • @TheKrazykool809

From what I understand, black is carbon, red is oxygen, white is hyrdrogen, and blue is nitrogen. I'm not sure about the other colors.

  • The beauty of science.

    Great vid.

  • Arsole = Ass hole?

  • Loved the video, however i detected a lot of humanist undertones in it.

  • Wunderschön tanenbaum

  • coolest tree ive ever seen

  • +1 for the Adrenaline molecule and LOL at the Arsole but you missed the Coffee (Caffeine) molecule!

Students at University should know that one, Chemistry students or not!

  • Ethanol looks more like a dog, it has a different coloured head and a long nose :)

  • I'm not a fan of Ibuprofen, a broken thumb + Ibuprofen = stomach ulcers. You need to put a Lansoprazole next to it.

    Merry Christmas

  • A Christmas chemistree?

  • 4;26 lol he made the date rape drug

  • Although used as such, GHB is not the "date rape" drug. GHB was used as a anesthetic and as a weight lifting supplement. Also found illicit use in the rave scene.

What you are thinking of is Rohypnol or "Ruphies." (Flunitrazepam)

  • You sure know a lot about drugs

  • hahha molymod :L

  • Looking forward to the molecular videos!

  • @DoktorBaglioni: So are we!

Any in particular you'd like to see!?

  • Best start with simple structures first like ammonia, acetylene or methane and then slowly moving on to bigger molecules like vanillin, styrene, vitamin C, indigo and β-carotene.

  • I heard about new chemical computers. That would be Awesome! Also viruses, enzymes, Superacids/superbases, DNA,What energy is,the chemestry inside mitochondris/chloroplasts, brain chemestry, What chemestry happens when we die, How catalysts work. Merrry Christmas!

  • @periodicvideos GABA or tryptophan

  • Caffeine! ;)

  • Benzene has an interesting history. I looked it up recently because I'm attending the Kekule lecture series in Antwerp, and I was wondering where the name came from. Another interesting molecule is ABS, the plastic Lego-bricks are made of (and it is used by the reprap people a lot).

  • @periodicvideos Maybe Vitamin B12 or something like that. Because this molecule looks incredibly complex. How did such complex molecules develop ("evolve")? Why do they need to be so complex? What do they do in the human body?

  • SUPER!!!! WERY WELL- I LOVE YOU PERIODIC CHEMISTRY!

  • @periodicvideos Yes! The one for alcohol! Cheers!

  • @periodicvideos Umm...Why not a video on Ammonia? My 11th grade chemistry textbook is FULL of Ammonia...

  • LOL Arsole

  • Awesome! Well done. Really enjoyed this.

    Happy Christmas.

  • Nice. What is the title of the background song

  • Love the expression at 0:36

  • Great idea!

My friends and I now started to do also a tree like that.

    I like this tree :-)

  • @85kanuto:

Send us a photo (details at the periodicvideos website) and we'll put it on our Flickr page!

  • Well I wanted to send it to you but today the tree is better called black tree because a metal ball of the tree made a shortcut at the christmastree-lights and burned the tree with all the lovely molecules :'(

Well now I try to do an another tree but my group hasn't enough balls for a lot of molecules. We'll send it tomorrow, we promise it.

  • I just wanted to thank everybody that helped with that.

    It was wonderful.

  • @MrFungus420: Thanks.... We really enjoyed doing it!

  • the most beautiful x-mas tree i have ever seen... great job!

  • You guys are a LOT of fun - great that you are doing some mythbusting with regard to the boffin-chemist stereotypes, making both the science and the people so accessable. Merry Christmas to you all.

  • who's she at 4:08 ? she's cute.

  • i love this!

  • I bet any money that one of the molecule videos will be Iron tetracarbonyl

  • WERY GOOD

  • chemis-tree

  • I never tire of this channel even if I have NO clue what they are talking about ^_^

  • I think the Chemistry tree is a great idea. Great Video!

  • I'm excited about the molecule videos.

  • where is the DNA festoon?

  • Pfft, Arsole >.>

  • nice tree :)

  • That was an awesome video. :D

  • Muito legal!!!

  • Merry Christmas!!!

    Why nobody made caffeine?!

  • I was wondering the same thing!

  • Yeah. What kind of college would it be without our good friend C8H10N4O2?

  • @DarksporkLeader: Or more like likely C21H30O2? It is college and experimentation is part of chemistry, right?

  • would go nicely with the green tree

  • @thelemur: And some Pringles. Or Cheetos. Maybe some Mac and Cheese! LOL

  • Yeah, I was very surprised not to see some caffeine on the tree.

  • i believe this is the first tree with a real arsole haning on it ... :D

  • i like the monster molecule, i rather call it"the beast" ^^

  • Amazing Chemistry Christmas Tree

I wish I conuld study in this University....

  • Molymod! The best :-)

    Keep it up!

  • merry christmas =D

  • Beautiful video! Well done!

  • I like that monster one:

    4,4'-Dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine

    C28H44N2

Tree is going to overload! O.O

  • Arsole! haha well done

  • Awesome video guys! Cant wait for the molecule videos!

  • that is the prettiest Christmas tree i have ever seen... =) i like the molecules that looks like the dog and the stars but all was amazing as well

  • because it looks like a dog!! XD funny!

  • lol we use those in school

  • If i did chemistry i would so go to nottingham, but that's not actually ever going to happen, i just like the videos

  • This is the cutest, nerdiest video I've ever seen. How sweet :)

  • Iodine + cesium = large explosion?

  • @Zantaer

More like cesium + flourine.... Hell.

  • Yay for molecular videos!

  • Woah! What I'd do for that Christmas tree ;]

I think it's brilliant what you guys do, Merry Christmas :]

  • Merry Xmas

  • nice decorations for christmas, and I learnt a few molecules aswell

  • : ) great.!

  • ARSOLE! :D These guys have my sense of humor lol.

  • Not only that, you can get Benzarsole and there is an oligomeric form called sexibenzarsole!

  • holly cap i don't have to learn all this struktues by heart if i study chemestry have i ?

  • Pffft, like they can all those themself :p

  • 1:16 More precisely Alanine.. :)

    Merry Christmas!

  • haha mint idea for decorations

  • Excellent idea! Loving the xmas decorations and very much looking forward to your videos on molecules next year.

Merry Xmas Notts Uni crew & a have a Happy New year 2010! Chemistry FTW! :D

  • oh yea i love science

  • Haha, love your videos guys. Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing more vids in the new year. Molecules Rule ;-D

  • Can't wait for H2SO4...

  • great video can't wait for '10

  • I enjoyed this video a lot.

  • Merry Christmas.

  • awesome shirt at start! i want it!

  • This videos are EFFIN AWESOME!

    Good work !

  • I wish i was smart enough to make all of those

  • YAY MOLECULES!

  • What's with the dude that made GHB?

    I mean come on, really?...

  • ???

  • Dude Thats what I was thinking too, hope he's a tripper and not a raper!!

  • It's a shame I no longer do chemistry... I would love to spend hours on end making models of Arsole XD

  • "It looks like a dog", "Acme's favorite", "Many hangovers saved" I love you guys! I would have put hydrochloric acid on there. Why? Because, without it, I couldn't digest all the wonderful things I eat at my Christmas parties!

  • That was a very well done video, great job you all!!

  • I would have made Methane. It's simple and tetrahedral.

  • This is a brilliant idea!!!

  • Excellent news,I'm looking forward to the videos on molecules greatly.

But how about an introduction to chemistry too for us non-chemists?

  • Man I wish I had a tree like that :(

Can't wait for the Molecular Videos

Merry Christmas University of Nottingham :D

  • that amino acid is actually glycine. and there 19 more, just want to point out, because he sounds there is only one.

  • sorry not glycine, alanine :P

  • Molecules? I'm looking forward to it.

  • Molecular Videos? That's even better than periodic videos, if possible! Can't wait!

  • yay very excited to see your previous videos.. thanks so much..amazing video..i love the way you make it informative

  • I like the molecule at 7:16. It looks a bit like a dog^^

  • Your right!

  • my favorite xmas tree

  • Nice video! My compliments!

I am looking forward to the molecule videos.

  • this is so cool!!!!!!!! a great idea

  • Omg, I did that dog-thing with propane too! People called me insane because of that xD Glad to see I'm not the only one who sees a dog there^^ It's so cute :D

    Merry christmas at all ^^

  • BALL AND STICK MODELS!!!

  • molecular videos?!?! AWESOME! Cant wait!

  • What a great idea!

  • i may go there one day.

  • love your videos and merry christmas!

  • None made C60? Aww :(

  • merry xmas to you, i love you guys. you make the best videos.

  • 2:51

    Nobody doesn't like boron. (Futurama)

  • molecule video's please!!!

  • That's so cool, I hope next year we will have x-mas tree in our faculty like this one ;D

  • now science teachers can call there students arsole and not get told off

  • I would have made O3, or ozone. Unfortunatly, it's one of the few molecules I know from memory. I was not a chemestry major in college. Fantastic video. It made me feel cheerful.

  • U didn't use potassium :( But the idea is very creative :D

  • I think the GHB is just to remind everyone that, while Christmas is a time for celebration, people could still get date-raped. And on that note, happy holidays! Did make me chuckle...

  • cool i didnt know adrenaline had a chemical fomula!

  • omg free camera in da second floor or somethingg!!! :O

  • I'm delighted to see the inclusion of ibuprofen and Boots' contribution. I've filled a lot of prescriptions using Boots' Rufen, even though it's hard to say three times fast! I'm also partial to adamantane, but with an amino group to make the classic flu antiviral, amantadine (Symmetrel). It looks like a robot with its amino "head." Merry Christmas!

  • That is an amazing Christmas tree. Keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to hearing about molecules.

  • Ahhhhhhhh another amazing video, thanks guys. Smart, funny and seasonal. I look forward to more next year plus the molecules project ;) You find great music too.

Which amino acid, there are over 20 to choose from? ;p I have to laugh at the Prof saying his molecule is better than everyone elses because its more christmassy ;D lovely job guys. I wish you all a merry xmas and a very happy 2010. Looking forward to more chemical fun then xxx

  • Absolutely enjoy watching it, brilliant idea of the video.

I can feel people's passion for their molecules.if my major was chemistry, I would keen to join your department, lol,

And I would like to get these ball and stick models as my Chrismas gift, lol

Looking forward to the "Molecule world of the video", lol.

    SCIENCE ROCK!

    peace XD

  • At 1:59, does he mean rotating around the single bonds? There aren't any double bonds in propane.

  • Looking forward to molecules !! Merry Christmas :)

  • Woot molecular chemistry!!! Good Job!
