@judecreek2 Lonely at the botton..John Belushi, doe Joe Cocker, someone else does Leon..from National Lampoon.Just google John Belushi lonely at the bottom if you haven't seen it watch it toooooo funny..
@judecreek2 I had seen one a few months back with John B.but it was a different one him just doing a skit of Joe Cocker,..too funny well it's snowing in Atlanta again what's up with that 3 inches in less than an hour..Need to get back to Miami soon...
@schwibert Ha! I live just outside of Detroit and we've had snow since the beginning of December! A record 7 inch snowfall and we are bracing for a new storm tomorrow. I can't wait for spring.
@judecreek2 Forgot last night I was listening to oldies, don't recall what one..But anyway a comment I read by someone said that piano playing has to be Leon Russell..He is the only one that can play like that..The king..
To watch this segment of concert is to watch the greatest rock performance.of our time, with the most heartfelt, sincere, talented people of our lifetime. I will watch it again and again and it has the same impact as the first time I ever saw it.. Leon Russell, Leon Russell, and again, LEON RUSSELL. Oh, how I would love to see him and thank him before I die.......
One of the very best live performances ever. Leon rips it up with this. Watch and learn how it was and is done. I list this as one of the very best ever rock performances. Better with time. Watch this on the new remastered Concert for Bangladesh with George Harrison and friends. It has the entire song and not cut.
I love this man.I love this song.I love coming to this site & cranking the sound up so loud with my earphones on that it vibrates my brain. There is no other entertainer that can compare to Leon Russell. He makes an old lady feel good & he still makes me happy after 40 years. How many people can say that after a 40 yr. relationship with music alone? I think none!!!!!!!!!!!
Might have been 'alright'at the time....time hasn't been kind to this cliché Bookie Wookie .Never liked this, even THEN.Saw it for what it was, overpaid and bored, rockstar junkies that lost their way, and found a home in Skyhill Dive.
@PAULLONDEN So I am curious as to why you chose to post on this particular video, just blessing the rest of us with your 'insight'? Oh and its boogie, woogie. If I didn't know any better I would swear that you were a republican...perhaps you are were just born in another time. Peace.
@badjuju420 The blond guy is Don Preston, the "Gentle Giant" from Leon's band The Shelter People. He co-wrote "Stranger in a Strange Land" with Leon. Don, the late Carl Radle(bass) and back-up singer Claudia Lennear( tell it! tell it!) appeared here and with Mad Dogs and Englishmen with Leon.
I first saw Leon in concert in Fort Worth Texas in the early seventies. It seemed he had at least one hundred singers with him on stage. To this day, its still the most exciting concert I have ever been to! And I have seen Elvis, the Beatles, Stones, and all the others majors acts to date. No one can touch the atmosphere of a Leon concert, the wall of sound, he always has the crowd standing and dancing in their shoes......encore after encore after encore.....
You may be sure that the guitar player to watch in this is Jesse Ed Davis, the First Naton late-great. His Tele is cutting through. Leon's so distinctive a singer...so glad Elton John and TBone Burnett have brought him back out of obscurity!
You may be sure that the guitar player to watch in this is Jesse Ed Davis, the First Naton late-great. His Tele is cutting through. Leon's so distinctive a singer!
@fingling8 When George put the lineup together, Clapton was still in London. Unfortunately, he was a junkie at the time. George bought him a ticket on every flight from London to NYC for 5 days before the concert, and sent someone to the airport to meet every flight. Each time, EC was a no-show. Rumors started flying that he wouldn't make it and guitarists started showing up in the lobby of the hotel George and Leon were staying at, offering their services.
@fingling8 There were a lot of good guitarists to choose from, and George was kinda torn about what to do. Then 3 days before the show, George and Leon came down into the lobby, and there was Jesse Ed, not only with his guitar, but he brought an amp, too! He started playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". George just stood there smiling and said, "With your kind of dedication, you're the guy we need." Leon, Don Preston and Klaus Voorman worked with Jesse Ed to learn all the songs.
@fingling8 When EC finally showed, he was in such bad shape, that nobody knew if he could handle doing the show. Being a true gentleman, Jesse Ed worked with EC to teach him the playlist! He offered to back out, but George wouldn't hear of it, and made sure Jesse Ed was out in front during both shows! George and Jesse Ed- 2 great men that we lost too soon.
@judecreek2 Well thanks very much, judecreek2! It's fascinating. I'm sad that one of the better Taj vids on the 'Tube--with Jesse Ed--has been taken down. And what a gentleman, as you say, to teach the famous junkie. Eric would have done the same. I just bought my older bro the forthcoming Leon Russell / Elton John duet CD. Thanks again... and you know, I've never really listened to George's music. I should. I used to argue at library school that he was nothing compared to Jimi H.
@fingling8 You're very welcome. I've got my "Union" CD ordered, too. And you're right. George and Jimi cannot be compared. Two very different types of musicians, very different styles and approaches to songs. They shouldn't be compared-just enjoyed and appreciated for themselves. That being said, DO treat yourself to George's music. You'll be happy you did.
@LittleJeanie420 This was filmed on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. There 2 shows that day-afternoon and evening. It was the first benefit concert ever held. George Harrison raised over $1 million dollars, which with today's inflation, probably equals $10 million.
you gotta love the look of immense satisfaction on Leon's face at the end. "Yeah, I just blew the fuckn roof off Madison Square Garden. Top that, Beatle boy!"
@judecreek2 I was at that first show in Detroit (East Town Theater), in March '70. Just turned 25. We were expecting the Grease Band. First came Redbone (band), then came Mountain with Leslie West in his PRIME. Then a pause...the curtain opens and I sat there for the next 90minutes with my mouth open! To THIS day I've never seen anything that comes close to that night. What a FAMILY !
@michaelgerarddejong Oh my God---I was also at the East Town for that show!! I was 14 and it was the first concert I ever went to. I gotta admit, as a 14 year old girl, Joe kinda freaked me out, but I developed a crush on Leon that's never quite faded. That show was amazing and it set the bar for my "rating" every concert I went to after that and none equaled. I've seen Leon more that a dozen times since, and like a fine wine, he only gets better with age.
@michaelgerarddejong I'm sorry, but I am technically challenged. Embarassed to admit I don't know what YouTube service is, if I have it, what I'd do with it if I did, or even how to get it. I'm lucky I figured out how to make comments!
@judecreek2 Yes he surely does belong in the Hall of Fame. I was a mere 16 when I first heard Leon, loved him then as I do now...he is the master of space and time, took me back a few decades listening to him now. too Cool, Oklahoma son.
gotta say, I never knew who Leon Russle was before I saw this video, but he is one of my new favs after watching this! Anyone who can get up there with George, Ringo, Bob, Billy, and the rest of the gang, and equal their talent, is good in my book!
@infauxtainment Leon was the musical director for the concert for Bangla Desh 1970- it was an all star line- up- you can look it up- and watch it too!
When in comes to rock 'n' roll, Leon kicks the door down and says "I'm the real deal." And it sure as shit shows here. ... as to his omission from the Hall of Fame - should be a crime given some of the latecomer lame-ass hacks that have been oozed in by shark-skin suited PR men.
I generally don't like people doing covers of classics-here is a great exception. In this film, like "Mad Dogs and Englismen," Leon effortlessly stole the show just by playing pure blistering Rock and Roll.
I have to agree withthe question of WHY he IS NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Certainly on his own merit, but also as a sideman. Go Leon
Thanks for this post, I remember when this was done, amazing I can remember('70's) Leon was always so intense and talented. Just look at all the talent he inspired by that one song. Thanks again!
My sister in law went to high school with Leon. She showed me the year book and he had like a flat top or burr hair cut. LOL I like him MUCH better like this!
2;11 - 2:15 should be " I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead". You must not've been there in the day. Lot of other "imagined lyrics" on your part. Like the video though.
Leon commands any stage he's on, no matter who the other stars may be. He's the Master of Space and Time and he conducts the proceedings from the keyboard with subtle piano cues, glaring looks, masterful gestures, and his powerful aura of cool. In the '70s, everyone knew that there was no one cooler than Leon. He's still just as cool, just as powerful, and just as talented! MoSaT continues to tour and create and amaze!
@lopingbuzzard. Your words on spot-on perfect. I've been writing the same things to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hard to imagine that this man HAS NOT BEEN INDUCTED.
@lopingbuzzard - This guy has captivated me for almost 40 years. I've saw him back in the early 70s three or four times, and you are so right about his talent and his mastery of the stage. He really does give new meaning to the word Performer! I so wanted to play like he does when I was a kid. His pounding, driving piano makes me go jungle. Lost in the Woods medley from Leon Live.
Pages225 - Kid Rock of the 70's??? Do you have any idea who Leon Russell has played with or even who he is? Please do some research if you feel you have to make comments on someone you know nothing about...
there aren't enough stars to rate this particular song and group!!you'll never see their like in their prime again and the new artists ....well they suck!!!there's more rock'n'roll talent here then was ever present on one stage...except "maybe" last waltz with dylan, joni mitchell, the band, neil young and crosby stills and nash...etc!!na-a-a-a-ah!
yea, the words . . . but it's ok, the vid is perfect!

Who's the nitwit who wrote the words on this video. 50% of them are wrong. The whole third verse of Jumpin Jack Flash is wrong.
3rd verse:
I was drowned, I was washed up and left for dead.
I fell down to my feet and I saw they bled.
I frowned at the crumbs of a crust of bread.
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I was crowned with a spike right thru my head.

There's actually some videos on yt of Leon from the early 60's. And if you look closely you'll see a very young Glen Campbell playing guitar for him.

Go Leon

Don't you lay that boogie-woogie music on the king of rock 'n' roll

There's just something about that YOUNGBLOOD song that takes me back to a rockin rollin time of my youth.
I love rockin to Leon....one of the best piano players on the planet....and an genius songwriter.
What a treat to run into this post...thanks

Pages225 - Kid Rock of the 70's??? Do you have any idea who Leon Russell has played with or even who he is? Please do some research if you feel you have to make comments on someone you know nothing about...

think back more than 40 years: Leon Russell in a three piece suit, one of up to four piano players in Phil Spector's wall of sound.....

Kinda cool how the subtitles depart from reality around 2:30... Who can name how many of the OTHER Big Names on the stage?
topcover2000 3 years ago
there aren't enough stars to rate this particular song and group!!you'll never see their like in their prime again and the new artists ....well they suck!!!there's more rock'n'roll talent here then was ever present on one stage...except "maybe" last waltz with dylan, joni mitchell, the band, neil young and crosby stills and nash...etc!!na-a-a-a-ah!

Brings back some great memories. This was my favorite song on the album. Leon should have been a Wilbury.
