@rocknrollme6 nuclear submarine have a nuclear reactor on board for power and propulsion. they are starting to become the norm now but there is also diesel subs. Nuclear submarines never have to surface except for food and water. diesel submarines have to surface every few days to use their diesel generators to charge the batteries that power the sub under water.

@salemcripple I believe it is to make sure that no matter what time of day it is the crew is always at the top of their game. think about it, they are stuck in the tight confines of a sub the entire trip, so physiologically it would be better for them to have 6 house of work, 6 hours of rest/repairs, and 6 hours of sleep, rather than having them try to work out three eight hour shifts

No SLBMs on such subs... this is a SNA (Frenchfor Nuclear Attack Submarine). However it is equipped with torpedoes and SM39 anti-ship missiles (sub version of Exocet).
