@POOHROCK1 I say you should mix genres allways, ofcourse ¿salsa? to dubstep isn't smart. But you could say BPM is like a ladder. You go hip-hop, pop, house, progressive, tech?, dubstep?, d&b?. You depend how high you will take the ladder. And then back, something, maybe, if it's the right moment
sorry but being a comedian on the mic died with the 80s no one is interested ........you ask anyone the next day what did the dj say last night they will say fuck knows wasn listening to him..................
Wow... I love music and want to major in Psychology. I really think I might get into Djing now because there is just so much Psychology in this stuff! Awesome vid m8.
I'd be very careful before taking the piss out of people! I was DJ'ing a Moulin Rouge birthday party and everyone was dressed as pimps and hoes and i scanned the dance floor and saw 2 blokes dressed as hoes! So i dropped the music and said "look at the 2 he she's on the dance floor!" suddenly the whole room stopped and fell silent. Turned out they were serious "he she's" I carried on the night as if nothing ever happened but i've learnt not to target people in the room it could be fatal!
Some dodgy advice here DJ's be careful about taking personal slants and takin the piss. People don't often take to this well and I have got into tricky situations, you need to be absolutley sure any jokes and messin about on individuals will be found funny by them. best to get a load of one liners and witty ideas off the web remember thme and use them if appropiate without being personal.
Man I stumbled across your videos by googling "using the mic dj" since I felt like this is the weakest part of my DJ game and wanted to see if I could get some tips. Am I glad I did that. I've already posted on a couple of other vids, but I can't say enough about how helpful for these are. Really appreciate it brother.
I heard this when annie mac did a set in glasto and when she wanted to change from house to drum and bass she used the same song but a dnb remix and seemlessly stopped the first song, talked to the audience then started the dnb remix. It sounded smooth as if nothing had changed.
anybody thought this guy should make a book or something? a movie maybe? I mean his a legend? he probably thought everyone out there how to be a successful DJ. Screw Tiesto, this guy is #1 DJ
Thanks a lot for this video ellaskin! Can you PLEASE make a video on what to say in a club! I try every week, but I JUST end up with saying; Are we having a good time? (lol that is so weak) so could you make a video on what to say in a club ?
Just a thought from my experience: club djs do not talk on the mic, at least in Miami, Ibiza, New York, San Fran etc, (the best clubs in the world). Now sometimes in smaller clubs a promoter will get on the mic and say "make some noise for DJ blah blah" and the crowd goes wild...but even that get annoying fast. If the dj plays great music the crowd will make noise for the dj regardless.
Not talking works for House Music were there is a certain vibe with the music but when you are changing in and out of genres or playing rap and especially dancehall you gotta be able to talk on the mic.
Very good video good advices. Prolly works great in Wales or UK or so. Taking a piss at someone in Fin will prolly result that guy coming at you, but that's just the nature of Finns. Great advices.
I agree the mic is an important element during an event, but personally I do not ever try to call out any one person. This may backfire and cause the entire crowd to turn on you. I try to keep the comments positive and only address an entire table and not an individual. Just my 2 cents, if it works for you keep at it, but just a warning to those that might try it and end up crossing the line accidentally.
It is possible to mix between genres even though beatmatching is not possible because of wide bpm changes. I have already started a video series on this topic called "Creative Mixing without Beatmatching".

your points are very true, I have a question? How many songs of a genre should a DJ play before switching to another genre?
