  • Lovely! We play this tune double in Co Sligo.

  • @synthpathetic LMAO

  • actually it is bigger than a violin, its a viola, 15 inch or so

  • well it could be a violin and a small girl or it could be a viola ^_^

  • I love me fiddle!

  • On the 8th day god made irish

  • A tiny girl with HUGE talent!

  • Either that is a huge fiddle or she is a tiny girl. In either case she is a wonderful fiddler and I have really enjoyed listening.

  • @TruegrassBoy Went to school with Erin shes a tiny girl trust me and fluent in Irish

  • I think it's a viola strung as a violin (that's definitely an e string,) and being a violist myself, I am sure that instrument is the size of a viola- they are wider and longer

  • Fantastic fiddle player Erin, John from Tarmon in County Leitrim would be proud of you..

  • she hot deathlord likey XD

  • many dickheads ago?!

  • @smellystinko ypu i caught that :D

  • i would like to see more fiddle vidios from erin

  • wow real good keep it up.

  • Very good indeed.

  • Very aggressive style of playing. Not bad though.

  • the large violins are usually modeled after the guarnieri model as opposed to the Strad models

  • Not true.

  • divine, the speeding up is just right :D x

  • Is it just me or is her violin a bit larger than a full size? I have a violist friend who's instrument is also abnormally sized. Love the girl in the vid though.

  • I see your point

  • Nope... normal size... she's just a wee lass

  • Look closely at the video..some of the size is shadow, although I think the violin looks larger because she is petite...yet she makes a big sound! Quite nice!

  • I recently played this at a concert. It went really well! Thank you comhaltas! Thank you Erin... YOU ROCK!

  • The difference between a violin and a fiddle? If you tip it over and beer and cigarette butts fall out, it's a fiddle. Lovely playing in this clip.

  • You carry a violin in a case and you carry a fiddle in a flour sack...

  • wrong, moron, it's the playing style. End of story. There's no damn difference between a violin and a fiddle and all the jokes about it were lame since over 20 years ago.

  • I certainly hope your rudeness has bolstered your rather large ego...oops...this isn't about you now, is it? We don't take you nearly as seriously as you take yourself, laddie.

The young lady is quite good. Let's hear more from her, and less from rick.

  • i suppose a fiddle is a violin with attitude :P

  • I don't play any stringed instrument - so I was wondering what are the physical differences between a fiddle and a violin? It looks like her's is wider on the bottom than a violin or is it a trick of the camera?

    Cassy

  • Any fiddle can be a violin and vice-versa. The difference is in how it is "set-up" and, more than anything, how it is played. The difference in set-up have to do with how high the bridge is (higher in the violin) and what strings are used.

But those are fairly trivial differences. If a violin player plays one set up like a fiddle, it will still sound like a violin because it's much more a matter of style than instrument.

  • Thanks - I was always curious about that.

  • I disagree. The vast majority of fiddlers play with the standard classical setup, synthetic-core strings and all. One does not have to lower the bridge or use steel strings for it to be "set up like a fiddle."

For all intents and purposes, fiddle and violin are two words for the same thing.

  • I don't think you are really disagreeing, fundamentally. My post is clearly saying the important difference is the person playing it.

Still, which fiddlers play with synthetic core? Tommy Jarrell? Frank George?

  • Hmm, after thinking about it more, maybe I'm wrong about the steel vs. synthetic bit. I'd still say the majority of players I know use synthetic.

As for which fiddlers, I think we're coming at it from different angles. I was thinking Liz Carroll, John Carty, Brian Conway.

  • Ah, here is the difference. Now I'm seeing there is a difference between "irish fiddlers" and "old time fiddlers." The ones I'm talking about are old time, you are talking about celtic fiddlers.

Now that you mention it, there's a bit of a continuum really. The old time fiddler is more likely to use steel strings, shorter bridge, and the classical player uses synthetic strings, higher bridge. The irish fiddler is in between. And the players are similarly laid out in their sounds.

  • When classical music is played of it,it is called a violin for any other music its called a fiddle....

  • love it.

  • Love that! Thanks for posting these.

  • U´r very good !
