  • I love this so much. Such an amazing tribute to an incredible woman. And Meryl Streep's reaction make it all that much sweeter. We love you Barbara Cook!

  • Meryl just can't contain herself, I love it.

  • Wooow!!! Amazing!!!! I wish I could have been there in person! (But this is second best!!):))

  • This is terrific, but how do you not include Glitter and Be Gay when honoring Barbara Cook?

  • @ng1493 they did include make our garden grow... though i was rather disappointed that Audra didn't sing Cunegonde's part

  • @kyspeters I know they did. My issue is the lack of Glitter and Be Gay. If you're going to include anything from Candide when honoring Barbara Cook, It's going to be that, not Make Our Garden Grow.

  • @ng1493 It was included, but they edited it out for the broadcast. When Kelli and Rebecca enter, you can see a woman in long gloves leaving. That was not Laura Osnes. The mystery lady sang Glitter and be Gay.

  • las 70.000 vistas son mias! :D tengo el video rayado cuando canta Glenn Close y Audra McDonald, siendo el momento mas emotivo cuando aparece la coral oooh Dios mio simplemente excelente ;)

  • Meryl Streep looks like she fully completely enjoyed all of those talented women performing. So cool.

  • One thing...what in the heck was Patti wearing and why was it in that dreadful color?

  • Laura is lovely here. She was terribly miscast in South Pacific. It's hard to live up to Kelli O'Hara. Glenn Close was a little aggressive for my taste but not bad. And of course, I love Sutton, Patti, and Audra. All the women in this performance gave me shivers. So much talent on one stage. I feel so privileged to have seen everyone but Kelli, Glenn, and Rebecca live.

  • I agree Audra McDonald splendiferous.. she always is

  • Saw Ms. Cook perform live in NYC some years ago in the Lincoln Center... though past her best she held the audience but I wonder should sopranos not be told when the notes can no longer be hit or held... her recordings are a joy especially Sondheim and the Disney stuff too.

  • This entire broadcast was magical. The force of talent all of the women in that room possess is enough to shatter mountains.

  • Every time that Audra McDonald comes out, and Patti LuPone and Glen Close are right across from eachother I become visibly nervous lol

  • @Jigglesw omg, you dont even know how much i was anticipating a cat fight, hahahahahaha.

  • Wow, some of the best female voices on Broadway on one stage! I die.

  • Glenn Close deserves to be honored by the Kennedy Center.

Anne Hathaway's expression summed it all up.

  • I saw Laura in "Anything Goes"...she's great! Loved Audra too!

  • Goose bumps from the Candide excerpt.

  • I have never had the privilege of hearing so many beautiful voices at once - at least, not live! I'm hoping to one day. Love Laura Osnes, Kelli O'Hara, Audra Mcdonald... everyone looked and sounded exquisite!

  • @leadingladybug I agree. One of the best Kennedy Center Honor tributes I have seen!

  • Barbara Cook is possibly the greatest soprano and one of the greatest performers of all time. I saw her in concert twice and both times it was pure magic. I loved seeing some great performers lined up for this tribute, esp. with Broadway's current reigning soprano Audra McDonald and rising star Laura Osnes.

  • to those who disliked: never has there been so much passion and talent on one stage. you could tell how deeply touched Ms. Cook was. utter beauty. true gems of the stage honoring one of the greatest Broadway performers. Brava!

  • This is just... oh my gosh.

  • can someone tell me the names off all of the songs in this video? I cant stop listening to them!

  • @randomthreeshow This is all very new to me, Will I Ever Tell You, Will He like me, Losing my Mind, Everybody Says Don't, Come Rain or Come Shine, Till There was You, Make Our Garden Grow

  • love audra mcdonald

  • I am so lucky to grow up in the youtube generation because I get to watch this again and again.

  • What is the name of the song Sutton sings? Laura Osnes as well?

  • Aww Patti is so tiny next to everyone! What a beautiful tribute to a woman whose talent is so immense. Love Barbara!

  • I LOVE PATTI LUPONE!!! SHE KICKED ASS WITH THAT SONG.

  • @Jigglesw Yes she did! All the perfomrmances were great!

  • @Jigglesw Heck, yeah, she did! :-D

  • sutton foster is amazing!! the last note---she made it look so effort less <3

  • Watching Meryl Streep's reaction to everything makes me cry as much as the actual performances!

  • You Go Glenn Clo Clo

  • Whoa, who knew Glenn Close could sing??

  • Losing My Mind a B side of pet shop boys single!!!!!!

  • @davidreinaschuster It's actually from "Follies," a 1971 Stephen Sondheim musical. Hey, did you know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings? ;-)

  • All that talent showed Broadway off to its best advantage honoring Barbara Cook! I particularly enjoyed Kelli O'Hara who has such a beautiful voice & is a delight to watch on stage, which I had the pleasure of doing the very next night, Dec 5th, on Broadway when Kelli starred in a sold-out Roundabout Theatre benefit concert version of "She Loves Me" singing this same song, "Will He Like Me?" and several others, receiving sustained ovations & great reviews! Check out photos on the internet.

  • I want a recording of Sutton's performance so I can listen to it over and over and over!!!

  • @GreatBroadwayFan same here, i've been looking for one...i think this is the 13th time i've listened to it!

  • As soon as sutton comes on you can feel everyone just draw all their attention to her:) she's perfect. And I love Anne Hathaway at 5.20

  • As soon as sutton comes on you can feel the everyone just draw all their attention to her:) she's perfect. And I love Anne Hathaway at 5.20

  • This event wasn't really Chorus Boy work - it was to honor Barbara Cook at Kennedy Center during Kennedy Center Honors with the President and First Lady there as well as the remaining honored guests - hardly a run of the mill chorus boy job.

  • So... when is Patti getting her Kennedy Center Honors? THAT will be an incredible performance.

  • @an7iguy OMG YES

  • but sutton was sutton!!! she was as always amazing and perfect in every way!! her voice was flawless

  • i dont like the songs they gave to sutton patti did good and i love glenn close's norma d. from sunset so much better than patti!!! i would love to hear patti when she isnt yelling into the microphone and that would be never!! audra was beautiful!! kelli was beautiful!! and laura stole the show!!! she was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LAURA OSNES WAS BEAUTIFUL TONIGHT!!! voice and all

  • This was an amazing tribute to a Broadway Legend. To show you how timeless Barbara Cook is - a friend of mine took her young daughter, who is now in her 20's, to a concert by Barbara Cook several years ago. The young lady was completely mesmerized by Ms. Cook's performance. Need I say more? Does anyone know the name and origin of the final song that was sung by the choir and whole group?

  • @TheDkersey it's "make our garden grow" from Candide....and yes, Barbara Cook was there singing it in 1956...tears<;;

  • @TheDkersey That would be the final chorus from the operetta "Candide" called "Make Our Garden Grow". Leonard Bernstein is the composer, Barbara Cook was a star of the original production in 1956.

  • Can anyone identify the men? Did I see Rory O'Malley and John Tartaglia?

  • Comment removed

  • @eagullick Two of them are Spencer Liff & Charlie Williams, they are relatively well known Broadway dancers/asst. choreographers.

  • How dare Lupone still sound that fabulous after 40 years of belting the hell out of Broadway and Audra is incandescent. What a finale. Bernstein at his best

  • 2 people can't feel emotion

  • Anyone know the name of the song Sutton sings?

  • @TheMusicJunkie94 Everyone Say Don't originally performed by Lee Remick in Anyone Can Whistle by Mr. Sondheim.

  • Because no one has said it yet, YOU GO GLENN CLO-CLO

  • oh my god audra <3

  • YASSS PATTI.

  • Laura Osnes would be a wonderful Christine in Phantom

  • I've got to admit that I didn't recognize the name "Barbara Cook" when I read the names of the honorees. After hearing of her accomplishments, I can't think of anyone who better deserves the honor . . . and the Kennedy Center tribute to her was simply amazing. It was one of the best Kennedy Center Honors show that I've ever seen.

  • This brings back so many happy memories of days in NYC 1959-1962 - so magical to be there with Barbara Cook. June E.

  • Starring the famous Broadway Bass, Sutton Foster.

  • I <3 Audra and Sutton!

  • @rawmark did you read Patti's Autobiography? there is a LOT of bad blood there surrounding Sunset Blvd, and Patti basically said she would NEVER appear with Glenn in her life. So something either changed (i.e. Glenn appologized) or Patti suddenly gained the ability to forgive!

  • @Jonboi713 It's amazing what another Tony award can do! To my understanding the bad blood was between Ms. Lupone & Sir Weber. Of course the $1MM she reportedly received to relinquish the role probably also helped.

  • Audra Mcdonald is sheer perfection. Lovely performance. Wonderful! Loved the excerpt from Candide in particular.

  • @thebrunette1 I'll tell you what made this tribute special for me. I had the privilege of seeing Audra McDonald and Barbara Cook together on the stage at the Kennedy Center. Yes, the same place where she just received the honor. That night, which I shared with my Mum, was the most magical night I've ever experienced. Also, it was clear in this tribute the love and respect Audra has for Barbara. That was obvious at their concert too!

  • @thebrunette1 She was brilliant in "Ragtime the Musical!"

  • @ticklemepurple86 I agree! One of my favorite musicals :)

  • only audra could follow patti.

  • Oh my goodness so speechless, amazing. *dies from talent overload*

  • This was a stunning collection of performances. But I must say, Rebecca Luker! Damn that woman has a gorgeous voice.

  • it sucks!

  • who is the woman with the gloves after Laura Osnes. it looks like she just got done singing but they cut it or something

  • @twi22lers CBS cut the performance of "Glitter and Be Gay" by soprano, Anna Christy. Too bad. It was an awesome piece, but a little long (I guess) for the editors. They had to cut quite a lot across the board from all of the tributes. Each honoree received almost 1 hour each, but for the rebroadcast, they cut it down to about 15 min each.

  • @twi22lers opera singer Anna Christy. She sang Glitter and be Gay. They even cut her out of the final panning at the end!

  • Absolutely stunning. It would have been great to have Kristin Chenoweth doing "Glitter" - but it was still wonderful!

  • Thank you for posting this video!! I was hoping someone would. That's me and my choir, the Choral Arts Society of Washington, singing at the end. It was such a thrill to honor such a great artist, to share the stage with all of that talent, and to perform for the President and the community of entertainers. For one brief moment, I had the opportunity to entertain those who have entertained me all these years. It was awesome!

  • What song does Sutton Foster sing?

  • I am in love with Sutton

  • Does anyone know if there is a place to get Glenn singing this song or do I need to just get it off youtube?

  • I'm surprised Glenn Close and Patti LuPone didn't get into a fight over SUNSET BLVD.

  • @rileymccarthy Betty Buckley is the ultimate Norma Desmond! :)

  • @rileymccarthy HAHA! I completely thought the same thing.

  • THIS WAS SOO BEAUTIFUL

  • The best. Period.

  • Oh my WORD. My mind is blown. The "Candide" EXPLOSION at the end literally blew me out of my chair. So much talent.

  • Also may I add that I think Audra McDonald stole the show. OK now I'm crying. WOW!! All of these ladies were/are incredible

  • Kelly O! just gorgeous voice . Audra I fell outta my chair!

  • You Go, Rebecca!! :)

  • @f13overture I have the feeling from editing that they (CBS) cut some parts of the other ladies' songs, but kept in all of Glenn Close. Why? because the tv audience knows who she is? and not exquisite Broadway actresses? What a shame.

  • WOW, Glenn Close can belt!!

  • I'm a huge Meryl fan but I must say this had to be my favorite tribute of the night. Meryl is a close second. Barbara Cook looked truely touched and honor. Plus I didn't know Glenn Close could sing. And Meryl was crying. Now I'm about to cry. Beautifully done!

  • is that charlie williams next to audra at the last song?

  • goosebumps! and tears! wow, this was beautiful!

  • that sadly wasn't audra's best night. i would have guessed she would be by far the best singer of them all, but rebecca luker stole the show. absolutely overlooked her talent for so long!

  • Sutton blew my mind.

  • @AVarkaris I'm so glad you mentioned her. She was truly amazing!

  • How did they ever get Patti to appear on a stage with Glenn?

  • @Jonboi713 Duh. Why do you ask such silly questions? They both have an extreme appreciation for Barbara Cook!

  • ammmmmmmmmmmmmmazeballs!!!

  • Love every bit of this, especially the classic LuPone vibrato tension/release at the end of Come Rain Or Come Shine and of course, Audra and a magnificent Make Our Garden Grow.

  • Aw<3, Meryl's crying 09:09

  • Astonishing...Thank you!!

  • Where the crap was Kristin Chenoweth?!?!

  • @broadwayboundqt they had her on for Julie Andrews a few years back...maybe they thought it would be better to have some others? As if there can be too much KC:)

  • @broadwayboundqt Kristin Chenoweth was hosting the AMAs that night. I was hoping she'd be here, too (& sing glitter and be gay!)

Kristin, Audra and Rebecca all did the Julie Andrews tribute in '01 - search "Julie Andrews Kennedy Center Honors performances complete" cause the full version is on here somewhere...

  • @broadwayboundqt Where the crap was Barbra Streisand?

  • @bigsquare88 you dummy she cant sing for barbra cook she won a couple years ago...and she really isnt a working broadway actress SHE ALREADY WON!!! these are all young barbra is in her 60s

  • @TheTHESPIANS101 That's funny, Smokey Robinson sang during the Neil Diamond tribute, and Smokey is a former honoree, and he's in his 70s...what's your explanation, professor?

  • Thank you, Thank you, Thank you from Australia.

  • I'm amazed Patti Lupone and Glenn Close could be on the same stage after the whole Sunset Boulevard affair.

Other than that, I love seeing some of the best of Broadway leading ladies on the same stage, especially Audra McDonald!

  • @MichaelCH2007 - I know, I was kind of waiting for Patti to pull out a knife or something, but I guess I can't have everything.

  • Thank you for posting! I saw it last night, but I was so blown away that I wanted to see it again. I had a kick watching Meryl Streep's reaction on all the performances. If I ever have the guts to perform on stage, I want Meryl Streep in the audience because no matter how bad I perform (and I'd be real bad), I'd know that she would be the one person who would shout BRAVO and clap the loudest.

  • Sutton Foster is god.

  • beautiful tribute!! Laura Osnes is amazing!

  • beautiful tribute!! Laura Osnes is amazing!

  • damn patti's still got it

  • Glenn f**king Close everyone!

  • Does anyone know who the other lady was that was cut from the airing? She's in opera gloves and was walking upstage when they introduced Rebecca Luker and Kelli O'hara....

  • @iamdivagirl Opera singer Anna Christy, she sang "Glitter & Be Gay ". Sad it was cut.

  • @iamdivagirl The music they play as Laura Osnes left was from Candide, so it was probably Anna Christy, who according to a few articles (I can't post hyperlinks otherwise I'd post them for you) sang "Glitter and Be Gay." I also read that Patti LuPone originally opened with "Loving You," but that too was edited out -- very smoothly, but if you look for it there is a tiny glitch before she starts singing. Pity they cut those songs for the broadcast, especially "Glitter."

  • oh my goodness, i am in tears with goosebumps all over! that was beautiful! this is what i live for and i want me life to include opportunities and performances just like that. wow, gorgeous!

  • THANK YOU. I lost power last night right in the middle of this, and it was over by the time it came back.

  • I love how a tribute to Barbara Cook could get Glenn Close and Patti LuPone on the same stage.

  • You are my hero for posting this. Thank you so much! This was my favorite tribute of the night!

  • from like 7:50 on....the concert band i play in is playing that suite for our next concert!! :) it was beautiful! i hope the my band can only attempt to replicate the beauty of that song as played here!

  • They were all great! Rebecca Luker's voice sounds the most like Barbara 's.

  • Tears and goosebumps on this end ;') That was so stunning,

  • Barbara Cook is a real American treasure. .. She so deserves this award. Her voice goes from her lips to our hearts. Congratulations "dear friend."

  • It takes guts to sing "losing my mind" in front of Barbara Cook, but Glenn Close pulled it off quite well. This stage was filled with people who are in awe of Barbara's talent but obviously also love her as a person...a great tribute to my favorite singer of all time

  • Meryl hearts Patti :D

  • Wow. I am blown away and absolutely stunned from the amazing talent on stage! Barbara Cook contributed a great deal of wonderful artistry. This tribute was simply incredible!!

  • @wicked0824 I agree and was floored too. Did you notice Meryl Streep crying when Audra McDonald was singing toward the end?

  • @rawmark OMG! yes. I have to admit, I cried too. hahaha ;) it was just so amazing!

  • @wicked0824 I'm with ya Wicked. I think Barbara was completely humbled by this award since she's on the committee that determines who receives the Kennedy Center Honors and her honor was kept secret. :)

  • @rawmark Really??! Wow. That's amazing.

  • @wicked0824

CRYING?!?! Did I cry? I am a MESS after this! They all love her so much (what B'Way lover doesn't?) and her face says it all. I dare not watch it again. I will have to be carted away. Magnificent!

  • @wicked0824 Tears. So many tears! xx

  • WOW!! I am blown away by the incredible talent on that stage! Barbara Cook has contributed such beautiful artistry. What an amazing tribute.
