pepper is lower in sugar. You can also give them cilantro daily. As far as hay and pellets piggys under 6 months can have alfafla it is high in calcium and good for them growning, but once your piggy is over 6 months you need a hay and pellet that is timothy based.
I would like to give you props for your video. I have 6 piggys and I to get my hay from KMS. Thier is a couple things I would like to say. As far as veggies and fruits romaine lettuce is oaky, but a better lettuce is green lettuce or red lettuce. As far as Vit C. As long as you have a good pellet that should give them most of the Vit C they need. I would suggest not giving an orange all the time instead give them green pepper it is very very high in vit C not as high as red pepper, but green
@hamsterzrock1 Guinea pigs are pack animals. They should have another of their kind. Doesn't mean you're REQUIRED to get another one, but it would be beneficial to the guinea pig.
Good info! but just one thing: they aren't supposed to have those vitamin c drops if thats what you meant by liquid vitamin c... and they should only have oranges as a special treat because they have a lot of sugar.
this video is the best guinea pig care video ive seen. it's so frustrating to see all the guinea pig owners mistreating their guinea pigs. i hate it too.

I bought my cage from a petstore, it's huge and comfortably fit two of my female guinea pigs. It's a little bigger than 2 by 4. Cubes and Coroplast cages were just unrealistic for me, and they aren't a necessity. Also, if you have a dog or a cat around, it's harder to make a C&C cage that is full enclosed. Actually they are high maitnence i have read animal planet books about guinea here is one thing they said...........
"Guinea pigs reletivley high maitnence animals, their cages need constantly cleaned, their food and water need to be changed every day or the food will have bedding in it and could make your guinea pig sick."
I've never had guinea pigs before except for when i was little, so i really want to learn as much as i can before i get some. You seem to really know your stuff and this is a really good video! :) i've read they need 10mg of vitamin C but i'm really not sure
This is funny. You're talking like you know everything. Honestly, you don't need to treat your guinea pigs like GODS. I understand, they are more maintenance than most people think, but you really don't need to devote every second of your life to them. Also, get a larger cage if your male pigs are fighting. They can become territorial if there's not enough room.
P.S. Males get nutered. Females get SPAYED... not nuetered. Don't believe you said that? Check out 0:50.
If you have only one guinea pig then it's gonna need a lot of attention, but I'm starting basketball on the second day of school so I'll be extra long coming home, will my guinea pig be alright while I'm gone becasue nobody will be home, my mom works at a school to
I'm gonna get a guinea pig and I wanted to konw that if when your feeding the guinea pig how big is the fruit you feed them and I love baby carrots so now my mom has to reasons to buy them, but I promise Iwon't go over board
Actually she ready had three guinea pigs, 2 are boys and 1 is a girl. she had them last Sunday, I'm given them alfalfa hay. Her three kids are they healthy, wonderful and cute. But thinks for telling me because imagine if i didn't know!
I take both of mine to the vet once a year for check ups. I always recommend vets for small animals. They live much longer, healthier lives when they're given proper veterinary care.
I have a female 5month old and she used to be with a male. 5minutes ago i heard her squeak really weirdly so i picked her up and then i found out she is pregnant. She might have it tonight, tomorrow and..... What should i do?!!?!?
I know nothing about guinea pig births, I would suggest doing some online research about pregnant guinea pigs and what the birthing process is. Sorry I couldn't help more, but I've only had males.
ok take the male to a new cage get perpared the guinea pigs baby shouldnt be around alot of noise it should actuly be easy the mother will feed and you may touch the baby guinea pigs just help the mama a lil bit REMEMBER: take the male out also go to your local petstore for help also feed a micture of food also fruits and vegtables make sure there in bitght siza
Male guinea pigs get along with each other just fine. I think you're getting confused with hamsters, they can't live together at all (solitary creatures). Two male guinea pigs will live together just fine. And you can neuter a girl guinea pig..I guess it would be called spaying instead though.
Adopt guys, don't buy from pet stores as they aren't qualified to give you the correct imfo and they often put males and females in together and mis sex piggies so you end up with babies.
. Go to reputable shelters who take in neglected cavys and they can give you lots of imfo aswell and you are guarenteed a healthy pet too that isn't pregnant
You can also try bunnings, the sign shops i live near won't sell the products to me. Some bunnings will give you the coroplast for free, others won't give it to you at all because they don't know what it is, explain to them that coroplast is what they use for real estate signs and then hopefully they will understand.
I tried these C&C cages and it is not practical at all. I could not clean it out properly, I couldn't even catch them to health check them, so they are back in their original cages. 2 of mine are in a 3/4ft by 1/2 ft cage and my other is in a smaller cage suitable for him.
But you forgot to mention that they can have out of cage time too, like on the floor or in a run in the garden.
You can get it from a sign shop. If you tell them you're using it for a guinea pig cage, they'll probably cut you a pretty good deal. Chances are lots of people have asked before you so they're used to people making cages. At least the place around me is.
It's possible that she has a cold. Keep an eye on her, because if she does have a cold, she'll go downhill quickly if she doesn't receive medical attention. What kind of bedding do you have her on? Where did you get her from?
i have her on some soft sorbent thing my girlfriend gave me for the guinea pig. and i think she got her from the pet store. and her eye is kind of squinted and teary.
She definitely sounds sick. I would put her on Aspen wood chips for now. It may be that she's allergic to the bedding that you have her on. Is she eating an drinking? If you got her from someplace like PetSmart or PetCo, they have a policy where you can bring them back and they'll treat them for free. This worked well with my sister's hamster. Regardless, I would get her to the vet to make sure she's okay.
about that policy, how does it work? do you just show up and say the guinea pig is sick? and do you need the receipt?the guinea pig got worse, and i need to take her somewhere. all the vets nearby dont treat guinea pigs.
You need to show the receipt if you want the care for free...it needs to be within 12 days or so. That only works for PetSmart and PetCo...those places have vets on site. Take her to PetSmart and get her treated, even if you have to pay for it. They'll be able to take care of her there.
I just want to add...don't wait. Even if they say they have nothing open for a few days, say it's urgent and if they don't see her within 24 hours you feel that she won't make it. When guinea pigs have respiratory infections, they don't last very long. She may die if she's not seen within the next day or so.
wood chips are actually hazardous to the guinea pigs health. you don't usually have a fungus problem as long as you do your weekly cleaning, but the dust often causes respiratory infections. some guinea pigs are simply allergic to the wood. so the safe way out is to avoid wood chips altogether. i know this from personal experience. comment me if you have any questions.
You should never EVER have a bunny and guinea pig together. They have totally different nutritional needs and I've heard horror stories of bunnies kicking guineas and really hurting them, even breaking their necks. I know you said they play together but you never know when something like this could happen. Plesae for the health of both your animals, remove them and place them in seperate cages. Then you can get another guinea for the lonely one.
It's okay, it's better that the guinea pig is in his own seperate cage. Worry about that first, not getting him a friend. Make sure he has timothy hay based pellets (with no seeds or anything) and fresh Bluegrass or Timothy hay every day (he should have an unlimited amount).
I think if you just let him sit there he'll be fine. Don't put any blankets or towels or anything on him if you think he's really overheated. Where do you live? Is it hot where you're at?
He's really warm...and cold? I don't get it. Did you wash him with really hot water? They don't need baths, did you clean him because he was dirty or something? They really only need baths if they rolled around in their pee or poop, but for the most part I wouldn't bathe him often. They only die of heat stroke if the temperature is above 83 degrees or so.
Yeah they're very skittish. He'll always be like that...at least I know mine are. They're prey animals. I'm having a hell of a time with mine right now trying to give him eye drops. I have to chase him around his cage for 10 mins before I can finally grab him. He is so upset with me. Just be very gentle and keep your voice kind. Make sure he has a little house to hide in and give him some time. Talk to him first for a while before attempting to pick him up. He'll come around.
I actually don't clean their ears. I asked my vet about it and she said you didn't really have to. I'm really not entirely sure if you do or not. I don't though and they've never had any problems. I look in there periodically to make sure things are okay and there's no build up of anything. Do make sure to clean their anal sacks out though with a cotton swab and mineral oil. You don't have to stick it in far, just swab around the edges to get the gunk out.
Um I'm sorry and who are you? Watch the videos if you're looking for information. If not, then don't come here complaining. I have another video saying what I give for Vitamin C. Maybe you should do your research before you write a comment about how I SHOULDN'T be making videos about guinea pig care. Give me a break.
Unless you want pregnant guinea pigs, if you have a boy and a girl together, ONE of them needs to be neutered. If you have two of the same kind, doesn't matter. No need to have them neutered.
thankyou!!! you answered mmy question i wasent sure how to give them vitamin c in liquid form but now i know you can give them half a slice of orange. you can actually also wash them with baby shampoo. all i need to find out now is where to get the timothy hay. when i ghet one though i dont thiunk i will be giving it pellets.
It's fine if you don't want to give them pellets but you must make sure they always have a ton of Timothy or Bluegrass hay since they have no other source of food. Also make sure you give them 1-2 cups of veggies a day. You can split it up and give them half in the morning and half at night since you're not going to be giving them pellets. Try KleenMama's Hayloft online for hay.
Also, do not give them oranges every day. Definitely the liquit vit c. Oranges have too much sugar.
They probably won't. Mine have always fought but I think I'm a rare case. Guinea pigs, for the most part, are loving towards one another. They may have some fights here and there if they're both young at the same time. Once they reach puberty, they will fight for dominancy. Nothing to be alarmed about unless you see blood or tufts of hair missing.
i will buy a guinea pig but... i only want one i dont have space for 2 should i get more space and buy 2 ?? i really only want 1 plss help mee... will he get sad for be alone ?? pls help :D
Never EVER let your guinea pig and hamster have any contact whatsoever. Your best bet would be to get two guinea pigs, since they're social animals. They usually travel in packs. So, if you want your guinea to have a friend, get another of the same sex. It will get lonely otherwise. Hamsters are solitary creatures and are best on their own. If you even put it with another hamster, they will both fight until one of them is dead.
How nice to see a young person on YouTube actually giving good guinea pig advice. You can see that a lot of younger kids are really listening to what you have to say. And you're a Philly girl! I got my 3 boars from the H.A.H. guinea pig rescue in southern NJ.
thank you for posting this! I have one guinea pig. unfortunately i didnt see this video in enough time to save my little guy from getting diabetes (too many fruit!) but with some restrictions he's doing better. hes 6 years old and i love him!
You really should. Guinea Pigs are herd animals and are better off with another of their own kind. They tend to get lonely if they're the only ones. Make sure you get one that is the same gender though.
I think it's because hamsters are pretty easy to take care of. I don't think I even had to research anything as far as taking care of them. Just make sure you don't give them a running wheel that's made of metal squares because they can break their feet in it. You want it to be solid plastic.
Well, there's nobody that's going to MAKE you get two pigs. But for the happiness and well-being of your animal, it should have a friend of the same sex. Guineas are herd animals and enjoy the companionship of others. It will be very lonely by itself all day.
They should have 1-2 cups of veggies each day. So you should give them mostly a leafy green like Romaine Lettuce or Kale. Then you can stick a baby carrot, piece of cucumber, etc. in there with it, but the majority of it should be greens. You can give them a small slice of orange or some banana, strawberry, blueberry, watermelon, etc...but not too much because it has a lot of sugar in it. Be careful with stuff like broccoli too because it gives them gas.
Babies should have unlimited pellets. Adults should get 1/4 cup each. So if you have two, you would give them each 1/4 of a cup, either all at once or 1/4 of a cup in the morning and then another at night. I usually just put mine in all at once though.
...I live in England, and I have not seen 'timothy' based hay/food anywhere. Is this a problem? Plus, mine live outside. They seem to be doing fine together. It is ok to keep them outside?
i found a guinea pig in the park on the way to work not to long ago. someone must have let him go, i was durprised to see him cause u dont see that often, anyway thanks for the tips hope to see more tips
Thanks! great advice but you cannot give them any citrus! it's really bad for the! I knbow from expeirience. feed them green apples. they have vitamin C in it.
no point of gettin a guinea pig when they invented dogs?
lol

Omg ok! I'll seprate them as soon as I get a new cage! but I can't have a 2nd guinea... I hope he wont be to lonely...
MilkyFactory 3 years ago
It's okay, it's better that the guinea pig is in his own seperate cage. Worry about that first, not getting him a friend. Make sure he has timothy hay based pellets (with no seeds or anything) and fresh Bluegrass or Timothy hay every day (he should have an unlimited amount).
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
I think if you just let him sit there he'll be fine. Don't put any blankets or towels or anything on him if you think he's really overheated. Where do you live? Is it hot where you're at?
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
He's really warm...and cold? I don't get it. Did you wash him with really hot water? They don't need baths, did you clean him because he was dirty or something? They really only need baths if they rolled around in their pee or poop, but for the most part I wouldn't bathe him often. They only die of heat stroke if the temperature is above 83 degrees or so.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
Yeah they're very skittish. He'll always be like that...at least I know mine are. They're prey animals. I'm having a hell of a time with mine right now trying to give him eye drops. I have to chase him around his cage for 10 mins before I can finally grab him. He is so upset with me. Just be very gentle and keep your voice kind. Make sure he has a little house to hide in and give him some time. Talk to him first for a while before attempting to pick him up. He'll come around.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
Yup, taking her to the vet is the best thing to do. I just had mine to the vet today for his eye. Doctor always knows best :)
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
I really don't know what that could be. Can you take her to the vet? If you think she's pregnant, she definitely has to see a vet anyway.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
I actually don't clean their ears. I asked my vet about it and she said you didn't really have to. I'm really not entirely sure if you do or not. I don't though and they've never had any problems. I look in there periodically to make sure things are okay and there's no build up of anything. Do make sure to clean their anal sacks out though with a cotton swab and mineral oil. You don't have to stick it in far, just swab around the edges to get the gunk out.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
Whatever dude. Go start shit with someone who cares.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
Um I'm sorry and who are you? Watch the videos if you're looking for information. If not, then don't come here complaining. I have another video saying what I give for Vitamin C. Maybe you should do your research before you write a comment about how I SHOULDN'T be making videos about guinea pig care. Give me a break.

You Dont HAVE To Get Your Guinea Pigs Nuted ... You Wierdo.
DudeiChester 3 years ago
Um I never said you did, you WEIRDO.
Unless you want pregnant guinea pigs, if you have a boy and a girl together, ONE of them needs to be neutered. If you have two of the same kind, doesn't matter. No need to have them neutered.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
thankyou!!! you answered mmy question i wasent sure how to give them vitamin c in liquid form but now i know you can give them half a slice of orange. you can actually also wash them with baby shampoo. all i need to find out now is where to get the timothy hay. when i ghet one though i dont thiunk i will be giving it pellets.
ownedneil919 3 years ago
It's fine if you don't want to give them pellets but you must make sure they always have a ton of Timothy or Bluegrass hay since they have no other source of food. Also make sure you give them 1-2 cups of veggies a day. You can split it up and give them half in the morning and half at night since you're not going to be giving them pellets. Try KleenMama's Hayloft online for hay.
Also, do not give them oranges every day. Definitely the liquit vit c. Oranges have too much sugar.

ive got to male guinea pigs too teehee you give some great advice!! :)will to males maybe fight when they are older?? i need to know! :)
amywilson6 3 years ago
They probably won't. Mine have always fought but I think I'm a rare case. Guinea pigs, for the most part, are loving towards one another. They may have some fights here and there if they're both young at the same time. Once they reach puberty, they will fight for dominancy. Nothing to be alarmed about unless you see blood or tufts of hair missing.

XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
How nice to see a young person on YouTube actually giving good guinea pig advice. You can see that a lot of younger kids are really listening to what you have to say. And you're a Philly girl! I got my 3 boars from the H.A.H. guinea pig rescue in southern NJ.
hallielou 3 years ago
thank you for posting this! I have one guinea pig. unfortunately i didnt see this video in enough time to save my little guy from getting diabetes (too many fruit!) but with some restrictions he's doing better. hes 6 years old and i love him!
everydaygirl81 3 years ago
You really should. Guinea Pigs are herd animals and are better off with another of their own kind. They tend to get lonely if they're the only ones. Make sure you get one that is the same gender though.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
none ever makes hamster care vedeos somone please
spideyO10 3 years ago
I think it's because hamsters are pretty easy to take care of. I don't think I even had to research anything as far as taking care of them. Just make sure you don't give them a running wheel that's made of metal squares because they can break their feet in it. You want it to be solid plastic.

do i haft to haft to have 2 pigs?
lccfootball77 3 years ago
Well, there's nobody that's going to MAKE you get two pigs. But for the happiness and well-being of your animal, it should have a friend of the same sex. Guineas are herd animals and enjoy the companionship of others. It will be very lonely by itself all day.

how much fruits and vegtables should u give em a day?
shimerfire95 3 years ago
They should have 1-2 cups of veggies each day. So you should give them mostly a leafy green like Romaine Lettuce or Kale. Then you can stick a baby carrot, piece of cucumber, etc. in there with it, but the majority of it should be greens. You can give them a small slice of orange or some banana, strawberry, blueberry, watermelon, etc...but not too much because it has a lot of sugar in it. Be careful with stuff like broccoli too because it gives them gas.
XxLaur1285xX 3 years ago
hey how much should you feed guinea pigs?
shimerfire95 3 years ago
Babies should have unlimited pellets. Adults should get 1/4 cup each. So if you have two, you would give them each 1/4 of a cup, either all at once or 1/4 of a cup in the morning and then another at night. I usually just put mine in all at once though.

Hey, I just watched both videos.
Very useful but....
...I live in England, and I have not seen 'timothy' based hay/food anywhere. Is this a problem? Plus, mine live outside. They seem to be doing fine together. It is ok to keep them outside?
