Honda should redesign the transmission and help its owners get upgraded for free. When they tell you that their vans have only limited warranty they are agreeing on the life of the transmission, in this case their transmission design is BAD, so the consumers have to be protected from the LEMON put in the market. Honda has MONEY and our Government is NOT going to do much.
If it's intermittent like what you seem to have here, it's likely an electrical problem like a sensor or solenoid. A mechanical problem would either be there all the time or get worse.
update: i have a 2003 ex-l. its up to 174,000 miles on its orignal transmission. if you drive on the highway all the time doing 80, this car will last you to 200K.
I had a 97 chrysler sebring and it had this problem, I took it to the mechanic and they replace the speed sensor, I paid 300 bucks for a 15 dlls part.
I have a 2001 Accord.. sounds like the exact same problem. Engine sounds just like mine, I have the D4 light blinking and my check engine light is on. Car jerks when put into Reverse.. I hit a puddle pretty bad(driving in So. Fla. at night..) minutes before this happened. Car used to jerk a little when accelerating, but now wouldn't know cause it looks and sounds just like the video and I'm nervous to have it over 40mph
@Bwoull123 I got the car back a couple of weeks ago. It was a loose "solanoid" connector or something of the sort. In the end a simple fix that took him forever to find. Check out the comment I made earlier, starting with "The transmission in this video..."
The transmission in this video is almost brand-new and still under warranty, which is why I was concerned enough to make a video for my mechanic (who couldn't reproduce the problem initially).
I don't understand the technical details, but the basic problem involved a loose solanoid (sp?) connector on the transmission. This put the engine into "fail-safe" mode where it stayed in 4th gear. That explains why the car accelerates so slowly. Final fix was tightening up those connectors. Nice & simple
@Oreckel selenoids $500dls honda odyssey 2000. I had a 2000 odyssey and just marked the same as yours for no more than quickening ran, and were the solenoid sure it did the same as yours. lucky friend.
@Oreckel WHOA! this was due to the solenoid? i'm going to have take a look at this. we have a 2001 Odyssey and it is having similar problem. can you be more specific about the soenoid connector problem? it worked it self loose?
@StuntDoubleTheatre Is the "D4" light flashing? A whining transmission can mean a transmission failure in the future......get rid of it quickly as you can before it fails Good luck
@PeterGriffin4200 nah the d light never flashes. its been whining for atleast 7 years now. the drive light flashed 3 years ago but the mechanic said it was a bad sensor, we had the sensor fixed and ever since then no prolems. its got 167,500 on it and its gonna be my first car when i learn to drive in a year.. hopefully it doesent crap out on me before 200,000:) its always started right up
@StuntDoubleTheatre Hopefully it won't but transmissions on these things are like ticking time bombs. So do you have an original transmission on the Odyssey?
@PeterGriffin4200@PeterGriffin4200 its got the orignal transmisson. i think the key is that the 100,000 miles on the car are pure highway miles.. it used to go to washington dc and back every weekend for 3 years form new york..its expected to go to indiana and florida this june as well its a 2003 honda odyssey ex-l RES and its always had the fluids changed on time. the mechanic says weve taken good care of it for the miles and it should last a good amount of time
@StuntDoubleTheatre 2003 models have fewer transmission problems compared to this 2000 model in this video. If original transmission went over 100k miles then you should be ok
@PeterGriffin4200 thank jesus ... it got back from a roadtrip today... whines as usual and we werent that nice to it... it was going 78-80 the whole time with no problems.. d4 light flashed once for 2 seconds in a parking light we turned the car off and on again and it didnt flash.. i asked my dad and he said we never replaced the sensor so whatever.. i love that car though itll be a sad day when it pulls to the side of the road...
@StuntDoubleTheatre Sounds like your Odyssey should be ok....I also came back from a 500 mile road trip in my 94 Toyota Camry with 285,000 miles and my engine check light(since last 5yrs) was on and O/D light was flashing(about a year) the whole way. The car ran like a top the whole way.
@PeterGriffin4200 i guess what happens when they get old, were also a fan of toyota! do you have any vids of the camry? our check engine light never came on in the whole cars life its going to indiana in 2 weeks and then to washington dc so well see if it makes it... lol
@vitok503 Not yet, I took it into the mechanic Monday and they're still tracking down the problem. This is a brand-new transmission under warranty, so I'm hoping we can get it fixed.

On the Odyssey theres a TCS button on the left maybe you have to push it to move faster.
