The album freaked me out, because on the inside of the case, when you take the CD out, it a negative image of a firefly. I thought there was a real bug and freaked out, it was on this song too!
The unborn child is snatchedf from Margeret when she drowns at the end. The Forest Queen takes her and it all begins again. The Rake runs from his haunting, confused and terrified, but returns some years later...to see a faun running through the woods.
@tmadpoet2 is this actually true, or is it something you're speculating? Either way, that sounds really really awesome (assuming The Rake isn't still an asshole when he discovers the faun).
@DarkElfMairead Ive thought about it and i thinks thats why they had to cross back over the river at the end. So maybe its dead and playing with the rakes kids.
this song along with the rest are so beautiful. the imperfections of her voice seem to be there because they add to the character that she is trying to voice. almost makes me cry and if I was a bigger man I would, but sadly, I am not
This is a very pretty song. I mainly listen to the instumentals, not the vocals. I like the way Collin's voice is a contrast to the woman's. They blend beautifully.
Truly one of my new favorite bands, The Decemberists captured my attention while listening to WYEP in Pittsburgh. I found their music tranquilizing and it goes well with a Vicodin and headphones. I seen their show last month and was blown away, a must see band if your fortunate enough to have them come to your town. COME BACK TO PITTSBURGH SOON!
The song appeals to me, among other reasons, because it's not something Colin could pull off on his own. He so often struggles because he doesn't want to hand over the lights to the other band members. Here, he lets go and she delivers effortlessly and beautifully. The love expressed is mature and beautiful celebrating the result, not the act of love.
@guisar81 When I think of the difference between her and him singing, it starts out like a gentle dance in the woods and turns into a bull running through a china shop.
When I first heard the song, I thought she had such a beautiful voice... and then he started singing - and ruined it. Not really ruined. I still like the song because it's soft and has a sweet sound but I don't think his voice suits the song. It's a gentle song and his voice is too... hard?, coarse?... something for the song.

i legitimately can't tell if the decemberists sold out or are just strangling the band out of their own boredom and resentment, but jesus christ, they have not done a good song for quite a few years now.
I might have agreed with you until this album- restores some faith in the band. For a while I was really concerned Colin's ego would destroy what they had created.
well it's not hard to get that if "way" were meant to be child, "play" would mean to be a metaphor for their union in bed, or sex. It's not that hard... I've only listened to the album twice for Rock Opera class.
Way as in the family way- so they got into the situation as a result of their sex play. One of the things I like about the Decemberists is that they don't use literal lyrics not like " It's great I fucked you and now we have a kid".
I love how sweet this song sounds compared to all the other ominous sounding songs on the album. Its kind of refreshing. Not that I dont like the more ominous ones on the album but this song is so pretty.
with this album the decemberists have completely changed their sound. the lyrics have remained the same but the studio has ruined the decemberists. before i thought they were amazing. i'm on song 6 of 17 and so disappointed. Where's the folky sound and ironic lyrics that i loved so much. harmonies may be perfect but these songs are awful. They are expanding as a group but in the wrong direction. THE HAZARDS OF LOVE? the rest of you cant be serious.
I thought that too when I had first heard it. and it is different, but not worse. The album has a different sound but its still a good sound. I do not like that alot of the songs sound the same and have the same lyrics. I find it annoying cuz I cant tell where the song ends and the new one begins, which is why I like this song so much. Its so different from the rest of the songs and its so pretty.
well the reason why u can't tell where one song ends and the next begins is so when you buy the album like ur supposed to the whole thing just sounds like a story or one continuous song. its a style. and yes i know most people here are not going to buy the album including me.
the lyrics in this song are soo incredible! (Wasn't it a lovely breeze/ that swept the leaves / of arbor eves/ and bent a brush our blushing knees) SOOO GOOOOD!

Is this a movie or something? i dont really understand.. or is it a song movie since i noticed that the whole CD is like one big song.

@irebob128 All the songs create one big story. This would make a great book though, wouldn't it?

"Way" is actually a common term for "situation," but you see it more in England.

Lol, his voice isn't to appealing to me, but for some reason I really like the album. But I do like the girls voice. I think it's nice :)

What the hell do they mean by "Isn't it a lovely way/We got in from our play"???? It's been driving me CRAZY.
anaphoraglass999 2 years ago
replace "way" with "child". voila.
giantfishhead 2 years ago
Why would you do that? Under what circumstances would the word "way" ever be used in place of the world "child"?
anaphoraglass999 2 years ago
And I also was referring more to what was meant by the lyric "We got in from our play."
