@KiranGlitch The red laser is three times the power. All things being equal, the green has the higher quantum energy because of it's wavelength. However you can get an IR laser that cuts steel.

also, the red laser was focused down to a smaller point.

tightgash, I bought a 30mw laser from DealExtreme in August, and today it doesn't work. It worked pretty well for a month. but then it barely lights up even with new batteries. I bought a 125mw Viper laser from Dragon Lasers in November and is working perfectly. You are correct in stating that they reselling lasers. But not from DX, they resell from CNI, which is a wholesale company anyway.

I also have a number of dealextreme lasers. While hanging with the guys they commented on the big difference between all the dealextreme lasers rated at the same power. That is the big difference. Quality. My Dragon lasers work first time every time at the rated power. Dealextreme lasers, who knows. (And it's moot anyway if you live in the US.) So please don't use my video to bad mouth Dragon.

On the quantum level, it's the green light. However the rating (100mW... 300mW) is the power. If you have a green and red laser both rated at the same power, the green will be 'brighter' to the eye. However you can get an invisible (UV or IR) laser that burns steel! Now THAT is power.

Power is a big deal. The pulsed lasers used for hair removal have much more power for much less time. Flashes the hair without destroying the skin. But I'm into holography and laser shows so don't use me as a reference for hair removal. Sorry mate.

I would say the 55 mw laser might suffice. If you would want to burn it more though the 75 mw should do it fine.

Red LED lasers have been around for quite a while. Green are newer. The shorter wavelength of green lasers makes them more useful for information technology. People don't want red anymore. (blue is even better and therefore more expensive). Green is harder to do. And people will pay more for the green, I know that I did.

Well, it 'concentrates' the light and focuses onto a smaller spot. So it doesn't increase the burning power of a weak laser, but will help draw together the existing energy onto a smaller point.

The red one needs a lens to focus it down at distance. They shoot down missiles with lasers. I'm working my way up (although I really haven't been pestered by any missiles lately). I can pop balloons at 10m (30 ft).

The more power, the better you see the beam.

For popping balloons at a distance? I've seen some nice videos on youtube using the 150mW. I pop them as part of demonstrations in light. Actually, pop the dark balloon inside the clear balloon is the best bit. So I really have not gone for distance.

However, the balloon cannot be moving at all, and neither can the laser. Good Luck.

I have both a dragon laser and like it, but also have a Wicked lasers. Like them both. Depends on what you can afford. Can't speak of the others but have heard a variety of horror stories.

i bought a Dealextreme 200mw Green laser and sure it is great for a light show but it sucks the juice out of batteries fast and its not really good for burning because the beam kind of splits into 2 beams like 2-3sec after you turn it on you cant see it but you can if you point it at something black and look close, it also seems to dim down as well.

Thanks for the input. I have checked the three I have from DL and they seem fine. I should make a video on how to measure laser power. Not an easy thing to do when the power gets up there. I have bought, well, thousands of lasers in my career and will get 10 green at a time from a place. It is not unusual for the output power to vary by as much as 40% within the batch of 10. But the best lasers I've bought in a long time are coming from dealextreme.

I have gotten about 40 dealextreme 30mW pointers and they are all great.

Until a few years ago I didn't have need for a power meter above 20mW. I did years of work in holography and wanted the sensitivity of a low power meter. Even with my 100mW Argon, I never needed to measure direct beam power, just illumination on the hologram. I use now use polarization filters to determine my beam intensity, but because I'm not using the lasers for holography I don't need to know the exact power.

Is there a difference? Einstein won his first Nobel prize by finding the difference in energy as a function of the color of light. Blue is higher. But for 'burning' purposes it's the 'power' of the laser. I have red, green, blue, and yellow and burn with my red and green. What can you afford? Get the most power in the color you like.

No idiot, purple is the most burning power you can get that you can see. There are two reasons:

1. Purple carries more energy/photon than red.

2. Purple is of a shorter wavelength so it collimates much better. People have been able to get more burning power with lower powered 405s than higher powered 650s but first and foremost it is the power of the laser rated in mW.

Sorry. I was having a bad day. Green has more energy but you want to go by how many milliwatts it is first. A 100mW red will not burn as well as a 100mW green but that's only just barely noticeable if at all.

You can see green better too. It should appear much, much brighter than red.
