The shikko originates from when in Japan they knelt down to eat. So someone could happily be sat there eating then another person would come up from behind or in front and attack them. In aikido you need to be able to do techniques on your knees for this reason.
There are many facets to shikko, one and the foremost is that all movement originate from the center. Thus, removing the appendages and employing movement from the center yeilds pure extension of the body. If you notice, there is no bending at the waist, just full, fluid body movement. The center is always moving forward.
Like many martial arts there is always an element of demonstration of kata. You cant see them but there is another pair doing the same techniques beside them and the judges are comparing - and then announce the better pair - hence why it is referred to as competition.
Just looked at it again and lack of other people on the mat means you are right. Although this would have been a practice session prior to the actual competition.
Having looked at it again I have just noticed that there is a panel sat to the right of the screen. This was the Open Kata event and points were awarded in the same way as in skaing (6.5 6.6 etc) so this was part of the competition.
First let me say I lost to these two and have the utmost respect for them. The only thing that made me sad was the lack of flow of dynamics by uke and the lack of snap by tore (it is there through a lot of it, just not through out). Then again I took a hit 3 tech that knocked me out on my feet, maybe I shouldn't comment
Me too...:)

Sorry, typo.
If you can do it on your knees you can do it when standing. It's the same principle.

it can be useful if you get knocked down to the ground, and are attacked as you're getting back up (when you are on your knees)

Nice one Chris and Danielle!
Nolispe what do you mean by lack of flow of dynamics by Chris and the lack of snap by Danielle?
Sorry it just confused me.

Excellent demo, however labeling it "competition" is misleading.

Actually,
this is freestyle, they are the only competitors on the mat at the time...in other competition, you would be correct
