On a 4-exit roundabout: Keep to the right if you are going to the first or second exit (Right or Straight ahead), and keep to the left if you are exiting at the third exit (or taking a u-turn). Remember to always signal in the direction you are going.
On a 3-exit roundabout: Keep to the right if you are going to the first exit, and keep to the left if you are going to the 2nd exit or doing u-turn.
To get traffic flowing faster, signals should be used when leaving the roundabout. In Sedonna AZ, I had to wait 5 minutes to get on the roundabout even though all left the roundabout where I was entering the roundabout. Use signals!
What is about Americans not using indicators? It it a traffic offense to use them? I've been driving in Florida for 2 years and I'd say only about 10 to15% of motorists use them. And I'd say their mainly Europeans.
@TheSinlessDefender The primary downside of a roundabout is that they require more space than a set of traffic signals. As the US has been slow to take up roundabouts, to implement them now in large cities makes them more expensive than traffic signals when the acquirement of private land is taken into account. Also, at very busy intersections, roundabouts can give too much bias to the direction of traffic with the most vehicles, making it difficult for other motorists to enter the intersection
So you'd rather not fix the problem and let it persist than actually fixing it? Yes it does cost a lot but in the long run, it's worth it and evidence has proved it works.
roundabouts are ideal for places where 1: There is moderate or less traffic (traffic queuing over the roundabout causes problems) 2: You have sufficient space (i.e. not in a city centre) as they allow you to proceed when the route is clear and eliminating the need to have to wait for a green light. They are far, far, far safer than intersections having more minor accidents but significantly fewer deaths.
Don't get too smug criticising the Yanks for no roundabouts. In the UK plenty of roundabouts are being removed and replaced with light-controlled junctions, just like the Yanks have now.
They have roundabouts all over Portugal, too. They are actually easy once you learn. They help control traffic without so many traffic lights and waiting. I have actually have seen very few accidents.
On a busy roundabout you can only get on when driver leaves at the road you are entiering on.
In British practice (about 50 years!!!) you indicate when you are about to leave the roundabout, this gives the driver waiting a cue that they can enter the roundabout.
The first modern roundabout's were introduced in 1966 in the UK and had replaced about 90% of intersections by 1980. They rapidly spread to the rest of the world. The USA is the last major country in the world to introduce them.
The British have been the world leaders in highway design for the last 50 years, the philosophy being to 'engineer' road accidents out of the system, Their accident rate is 30% that of the USA.
@CTaran you will see the light. Roundabouts save energy from not having to have signals, you don't have to come to a complete stop , so you save fuel by not having to downshift. You will alway treat it as a yield, so no mad dash to beat the light before it goes red ,will stop a lot of those fatal carnage clips you end up seeing on TV. I know its like a flying saucer invasion but do not fear them, or hire a backhoe tractor & demolish them. They work !
Nice to see roundabouts making an appearance in the US!
As an observation – it's bizarre that your title sequences show a clockwise movement, like in British roundabouts, whereas your actual roundabouts are taken anti-clockwise!
@localdriver A lot of times, they merely show a British roundabout in reverse, though American and Canadian roundabouts are much more like the ones found in Australia than th eones in the UK. The lane markings in French and Italian roundabouts I think is bizarre. (They mark the roundabout all the way around with double or triple lane stripes, with none of the lanes supposedly leaving the roundabout.)
I visited Australia in the late 90's and they had roundabouts instead of traditional stop signs and lights everywhere. I thought then it was a great idea and the US should be using them. I am glad to see we are finally catching on to it!
Only saw 1 vehicle using indicators. Only if taking a 12 o clock exit you do not use indicators on entering. Any exit beyond this use left lane (USA)

The single-lane roundabouts look simple enough. It's the multi-lane roundabouts like Lambeth Bridge that are confusing.

@HunterstonB True words man. It always annoys me if they don't indicate before leaving.

Well, that's the difference between fact and opinion.
It's a fact that you are about 90% less likely to be killed at a Roundabout than a 4 way.
It's opinion that they are dangerous and confusing.
