Just because I don't care for a certain artist or don't understand them totally declassifies them as music. Just because I can't comprehend how ignorant and narrow minded you are, doesn't mean your not a human being.
@m1lky What studies? I think you are just pulling shit out of your ass to be a troll and you should just go watch videos you like instead of wasting your time commenting on things you don't even want to watch. Do you have a job or are you in school or something? You must not because you have enough time in the day to post a chain of several comments on a video you dont even want to watch in the first place.
ever heard of aphex twin? stfu before u diss "unlistenable music" go find a dark room and listen to brittany spears for the rest of ur life if thats what makes u feel good. ill stay in the light with my progressive mind bending goodness
@scsteeldrums im not saying that, im just saying that these guys wouldnt exist without those people before them to play for us "normal good music". Now, since we have had all the old formulas rewritten countless times, newer forms of music emerge.
What's new? Please point me in this direction so I don't miss anything. I would like to be optimist but everything that could be done has been done, unless someone is going to play standing on his head. Either way, if you close your eyes, it's only music. There are only two categories of music. Good music and bad music. And both categories are highly subjective. With less education, bad music is judged as good. Good music is in very small minority.
@micanut48 yeah its not "new" music but its new compositions, rather than the atypical. wether that makes it good or bad i guess depends on ur mood and ur musical education. but yeah its better to enjoy the music that argue about it.
@DRGasMoney maybe, but theres no denying he is one of the most genius musicians in the last couple hundred years, unless you are eurocentric or ignorant.
Everybody talking about scales, even the chromatic one, is way off. Theoretically this stuff is more in line with 20th century orchestral music (ie Stockhausen, Ligeti, Berio) than most/all metal and rock. Free expressionism without the constraints of scales. Once in a while they do have tonal parts (check the middle of Canada for instance) but the more dissonant, 'random' sounding material is more about making you follow the music intelligently to be able to comprehend and feel it.
Ermm... cephalopod... How exactly is a chromatic scale (you know... the one where you can use EVERY note) restricting...?
And most of their stuff is actually very confined into a extremely rigid set of musical rules to get a certain sound. It's called twelve tone technique - founded by Arnold Schoenberg. Honestly, it's a real bitch to write in, all tones have to sound equally and without any regular emphasis. Thus avoiding a tonal centre perfectly.
There are levels of pitch organization beyond the notion of a scale - such as non-octaviating sequences or intervallic cycles - and to say that BTA's stuff is in 'the chromatic scale' would just be a huge copout. Colin Marston has used Schoenberg's dodecaphony on whole pieces (Estrogen Pathogen Exchange Program) and for sections (Paincave) but [atonal] music has developed since Schoenberg's time - 100 years ago - and Marston knows that. He's more akin to Berio or Ligeti, I think.
Fair enough. You know what your talking about better than I. It just sounded like you were suggesting that the chromatic scale was in itself; limiting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
theres no consistency in this fuckin music and i HIGHLY doubt they are even fucking play a scale... they probably are playing chromatic. and PLUS THE MUSIC DOESNT EVEN HAVE A FUCKING RHYTHM. if you think it doe, tell me how many BPM this song is.
i think u doesnt understand the concept of being a progressive band and having different signatures in a song... this band isnt about playing in 4/4 on every song they play complex song with complex structure i cant tell u more im no musician but i know that u wont like this band if u only listen to it one time coz u need time n more than one listening to come to understand and like this kind of music, coz its complex, while simple stuff r easy n catchy so its easy to remember like rap or hiphop
Correct Jacothy, they ARE playing a chromatic scale, and yes, they base their songs on primarily atonal structures in accordance with Schoenberg's twelve tone technique. Yes, this IS intended to be unpleasant and uncomfortable to the ear, this is because we have grown listening to music rooted on a key all our lives. NO, they don't use consistency in their songs... That's sort of the point of disjointed music... expand your musical horizons man. Music isn't all meant to sound the same.
This is a perfect example of how being technically proficient in no way makes your music listenable. These guys are obviously fantastic musicians, but their songs are a steaming pile.
what ppl don't get is that none of this is random... it's all deliberate... kinda like meshuggah... they sound random as fuck but it's all very well planned out... (btw i was not at all trying to say that these guys sound like meshuggah cuz they clearly don't but they're both confusing as fuck if u don't pay attention)
Although I can tell the guitarist has great technical skill, it still manages to sound like none of them have ever played an instrument before. you can't just pile notes onto eachother at random.
It's what u call a progressive band and its a new one so they doing new stuff that not all ppl like but it is still great even if some of u doesnt like it and hes not doing random it as a structure behind it Its pretty hard to see bcoz its what a progressive band is all about
In that case, please tell me what gives this music it's structure(other that the technical parts). What scales did they use to get their sound? How exactly is it that the notes make any sense. Because all I see is a guy playing(forgive me) childish riffs made of simple consectutive notes.
I couldnt tell u coz im no guitar player :O but weve talk so much about them that I know that those r special structure n hard to understand theyre always changing tempo in their songs going from 150 bpm to 300... I cant tell u more I'm not a reference into guitar playing but my friends are and they play this kind of music wich u dont like but u can't deny that they are talented, u would of came out like that if you would have play childish riff on cd?????
The technicality of the music is obvious and highly advanced. But if you consider chromatic notes to be a scale, then whatever. I guess it's good. they sure do stick to chromatic. And don't judge me on stupid videos I didn't want to be make in the first place. also, 150bpm to 300bpm is just doubling speed, but I got the point.
you gotta listen to it carfully if u wanna really get what they doing its pretty complex at first i didnt like behold but after a couple of time i really enjoyed it bcoz after listening to it often I kinda "understand" where they going and what they do its just putting in words is kinda complicate... but after listening to it a lot of time I liked it its just hard to get it in one listening... thats my opinion
It's called the chromatic scale. Not to mention it is somewhat difficult to consider your argument valid when then extent of your creative contribution to the world is a startlingly unfunny "battle" with guitar hero controllers.
they're use a lot of chromatics... sorry there aren't any pretty major scales in there for u... i hear britney spears just realeased a new album tho so u're in luck...
Ok dude, first off the bat, way to beat a dead horse. Second, you do realizse that's impossible NOT to use chromatic scale, seeing as that would just be every note played consecutively. Third, don't act like some misunderstood dickweed saying I listen to Britney Spears, just because I don't listen to your shitty mathcore.
stop whining cuz u don't understand... just cuz u don't get it doesn't make it bad... sayinig that this isn't music because it's different is like making black ppl 3/5 person for having darker skin... it's an archaic way of thinking... grow up fag...
It looks more like you're the one who "doesn't understand". I'm the one actually uses some musical examples to support what I'm saying. You just use really bad analogies to try to make fun of me. I didn't say this isn't music, just that the notes have no correlation whatsoever. And do you realize how immature "grow up fag" sounds? It's an oxymoron.
the notes always have some sort of correlation... there are plenty of bands that use chromatics extensively... hell even victor wooten and steve vai use chromatics... just because these guys like to use them differently thatn u would doesn't make them any less talented... just cuz it's not what you want to hear doesn't mean it's not music... like i said... grow up... open ur mind up... something... or just stay the hell outa here if u don't like what u hear...
btw it's very cute how smart u "try" to sound... not ever song is going to be in 4/4 or a major key or in any particular key that u can easily point out... chromatics are part of music... as are abstract time signatures... they're not common but it doesn't by any means make it wrong... u sir are a close minded moron...
Once again, I didn't say it's not music. Also, who said anything about 4/4 tempos or major keys? I can fully appreciate that the guitarist and bassist can play complex rythms and clearly know their instruments, and the drummer is amazing. BUT the only problem is that the notes seem to be played simply because they're right next to eachother. I fully appreciate every aspect of music.
And btw we pretty much sound the same in how "smart" we try to sound. Why do you assume I'm some close minded moron? I listen to alot of different genres of music and I don't know why you're so pissed. All I'm saying is that their music could use a little sense to the notes. The tempos, clarity, aggression, whatever are all excellent. But I guess they did it all intentionally so whatever man.
i kinda get what u're saying about the chromatics but i don't think the complexity of the note combinations is what's important here... i think it's more timing and dissonance... the only time the scales are important is when a discernable melody is present...
every time i hear something from this band i have a sudden feeling of great evil inside my head like the darkness surrounding every angle around me and bats encircling me like im some kind of sick evil murderer i cant describe the weird sick twisted images thats inspired from their music O:
Saw them play there this year. It was amazing, I talked to Colin for like 15 minutes before the show. Good guy. Mike was mad drunk lol and didnt know that a band was opening for them that night. ROFL
That's funny. You know a lot of people think of them as "Math Metal" or something. I guess they use that term for metal music they can't understand. I don't know. They are technically amazing and you definitely need a discerning ear to enjoy music like this. I won't lie, it can be difficult to listen to a lot, but they are VERY TALENTED none the less.
most different band ever..thats why people hate them..HAHAHA haters are promoters so keep it up guys!!im sure behold loves it that people say they suck..because over all they dont want to be some mainstream band that never playes original stuff and has to have a singer to show their feelings..FUCK that.people who need their singer have little brain power..music is the higher form of speaking some of you just cant handle their information...THE END
Ok, Ill go by genre. Led Zeppelin, Shinedown, Theory of a Deadman, Blackstone Cherry, Aerosmith. Alot more but I cant think right now. Im just saying they suck and thats my opinion. Dont flip over an opinion.
you guys are really interesting and unique. very cool music and believe or not i like the melody. somehow this stuff makes a lot more sense then stupid head bashing metal. keep up the good work!!!!
thes guys have telent and their songs are complicated, but they don't sound very good to me. they seem to play some of the least melodic stuff i've heard before. they focus only on complexity while they should try to mix complexity with melody.
You should care about hats... and sentences too. It hurts them when they get mangled like that. You should really stop watching things that you think suck. Now that is just fucking stupid.
dude, i'm sorry you find it necessary to keep coming here and saying the same 8 or 9 words. Why don't you school us then meathead....what should we be listening to? C'mon and tell us what is holy in your musical bible? Lend us your infinitely wise taste so that we may set ourselves free of this earhole tyranny we've been calling music...
ok dude first disturbed - indesturctiable , pantera - cemertary gates, metallica - battery come on pick any one of theis bands songs they all rival this shitty annoying bands songs
in their music i listen a lot of king crimson, and i like them!

Just because I don't care for a certain artist or don't understand them totally declassifies them as music. Just because I can't comprehend how ignorant and narrow minded you are, doesn't mean your not a human being.
clarkshapedbox 2 years ago
Prove it.
m1lky 2 years ago
@m1lky What studies? I think you are just pulling shit out of your ass to be a troll and you should just go watch videos you like instead of wasting your time commenting on things you don't even want to watch. Do you have a job or are you in school or something? You must not because you have enough time in the day to post a chain of several comments on a video you dont even want to watch in the first place.

ever heard of aphex twin? stfu before u diss "unlistenable music" go find a dark room and listen to brittany spears for the rest of ur life if thats what makes u feel good. ill stay in the light with my progressive mind bending goodness
CrystalTrees5mcs 2 years ago
Aphex Twin is horrible to.
People get to wrapped up in pretentiousness and trying to be different that they dont notice how stupid they look.
m1lky 2 years ago
if by horrible u mean some of the best music in the history of mankind then yeah i can agree with you.
CrystalTrees5mcs 2 years ago
You're right! Fakers like Mozart, Bach, Ravi Shankar don't hold a candle to these guys.
scsteeldrums 2 years ago
@scsteeldrums im not saying that, im just saying that these guys wouldnt exist without those people before them to play for us "normal good music". Now, since we have had all the old formulas rewritten countless times, newer forms of music emerge.
CrystalTrees5mcs 2 years ago
Good music is in very small minority.
micanut48 1 year ago
@micanut48 yeah its not "new" music but its new compositions, rather than the atypical. wether that makes it good or bad i guess depends on ur mood and ur musical education. but yeah its better to enjoy the music that argue about it.

Everybody talking about scales, even the chromatic one, is way off. Theoretically this stuff is more in line with 20th century orchestral music (ie Stockhausen, Ligeti, Berio) than most/all metal and rock. Free expressionism without the constraints of scales. Once in a while they do have tonal parts (check the middle of Canada for instance) but the more dissonant, 'random' sounding material is more about making you follow the music intelligently to be able to comprehend and feel it.
cephalopod 2 years ago 12
Ermm... cephalopod...

He's more akin to Berio or Ligeti, I think.
cephalopod 2 years ago 2
Fair enough. You know what your talking about better than I. It just sounded like you were suggesting that the chromatic scale was in itself; limiting.
My bad. Sorry for the bother.

theres no consistency in this fuckin music and i HIGHLY doubt they are even fucking play a scale... they probably are playing chromatic. and PLUS THE MUSIC DOESNT EVEN HAVE A FUCKING RHYTHM. if you think it doe, tell me how many BPM this song is.
jacothy 2 years ago
It's cca 192.
But music ain't made of rhytm or scales, not even consistency. It's made of feelings. What did you feel listening to this?
repattila 2 years ago
it's called shifting signatures, dumbass
kingkongster 2 years ago 2
i think u doesnt understand the concept of being a progressive band and having different signatures in a song... this band isnt about playing in 4/4 on every song they play complex song with complex structure i cant tell u more im no musician but i know that u wont like this band if u only listen to it one time coz u need time n more than one listening to come to understand and like this kind of music, coz its complex, while simple stuff r easy n catchy so its easy to remember like rap or hiphop
joesakik89 2 years ago 2
Correct Jacothy, they ARE playing a chromatic scale, and yes, they base their songs on primarily atonal structures in accordance with Schoenberg's twelve tone technique. Yes, this IS intended to be unpleasant and uncomfortable to the ear, this is because we have grown listening to music rooted on a key all our lives. NO, they don't use consistency in their songs... That's sort of the point of disjointed music... expand your musical horizons man. Music isn't all meant to sound the same.
PickUpYourLighters 2 years ago 2
This is a perfect example of how being technically proficient in no way makes your music listenable. These guys are obviously fantastic musicians, but their songs are a steaming pile.

what ppl don't get is that none of this is random... it's all deliberate... kinda like meshuggah... they sound random as fuck but it's all very well planned out... BrandtCooley 3 years ago
Although I can tell the guitarist has great technical skill, it still manages to sound like none of them have ever played an instrument before. you can't just pile notes onto eachother at random.
griffknox 3 years ago
It's what u call a progressive band and its a new one so they doing new stuff that not all ppl like but it is still great even if some of u doesnt like it and hes not doing random it as a structure behind it Its pretty hard to see bcoz its what a progressive band is all about
joesakik89 3 years ago
In that case, please tell me what gives this music it's structure(other that the technical parts). What scales did they use to get their sound? How exactly is it that the notes make any sense. Because all I see is a guy playing(forgive me) childish riffs made of simple consectutive notes.
griffknox 3 years ago
I couldnt tell u coz im no guitar player :O but weve talk so much about them that I know that those r special structure n hard to understand theyre always changing tempo in their songs going from 150 bpm to 300... I cant tell u more I'm not a reference into guitar playing but my friends are and they play this kind of music wich u dont like but u can't deny that they are talented, u would of came out like that if you would have play childish riff on cd?????
joesakik89 3 years ago
The technicality of the music is obvious and highly advanced. But if you consider chromatic notes to be a scale, then whatever. I guess it's good. they sure do stick to chromatic. And don't judge me on stupid videos I didn't want to be make in the first place. also, 150bpm to 300bpm is just doubling speed, but I got the point.
griffknox 3 years ago
you gotta listen to it carfully if u wanna really get what they doing its pretty complex at first i didnt like behold but after a couple of time i really enjoyed it bcoz after listening to it often I kinda "understand" where they going and what they do its just putting in words is kinda complicate... but after listening to it a lot of time I liked it its just hard to get it in one listening... thats my opinion
joesakik89 3 years ago
It's called the chromatic scale. Not to mention it is somewhat difficult to consider your argument valid when then extent of your creative contribution to the world is a startlingly unfunny "battle" with guitar hero controllers.
FredrickKinsington 3 years ago
they're use a lot of chromatics... sorry there aren't any pretty major scales in there for u... i hear britney spears just realeased a new album tho so u're in luck...
Inkawgneegrow 3 years ago
Ok dude, first off the bat, way to beat a dead horse. Second, you do realizse that's impossible NOT to use chromatic scale, seeing as that would just be every note played consecutively. Third, don't act like some misunderstood dickweed saying I listen to Britney Spears, just because I don't listen to your shitty mathcore.
griffknox 3 years ago
stop whining cuz u don't understand... just cuz u don't get it doesn't make it bad... sayinig that this isn't music because it's different is like making black ppl 3/5 person for having darker skin... it's an archaic way of thinking... grow up fag...
Inkawgneegrow 3 years ago
It looks more like you're the one who "doesn't understand". I'm the one actually uses some musical examples to support what I'm saying. You just use really bad analogies to try to make fun of me. I didn't say this isn't music, just that the notes have no correlation whatsoever. And do you realize how immature "grow up fag" sounds? It's an oxymoron.
griffknox 3 years ago
the notes always have some sort of correlation... there are plenty of bands that use chromatics extensively... hell even victor wooten and steve vai use chromatics... just because these guys like to use them differently thatn u would doesn't make them any less talented... just cuz it's not what you want to hear doesn't mean it's not music... like i said... grow up... open ur mind up... something... or just stay the hell outa here if u don't like what u hear...
Inkawgneegrow 3 years ago
btw it's very cute how smart u "try" to sound... not ever song is going to be in 4/4 or a major key or in any particular key that u can easily point out... chromatics are part of music... as are abstract time signatures... they're not common but it doesn't by any means make it wrong... u sir are a close minded moron...
Inkawgneegrow 3 years ago
Once again, I didn't say it's not music. Also, who said anything about 4/4 tempos or major keys? I can fully appreciate that the guitarist and bassist can play complex rythms and clearly know their instruments, and the drummer is amazing. BUT the only problem is that the notes seem to be played simply because they're right next to eachother. I fully appreciate every aspect of music.
griffknox 3 years ago
And btw we pretty much sound the same in how "smart" we try to sound. Why do you assume I'm some close minded moron? I listen to alot of different genres of music and I don't know why you're so pissed. All I'm saying is that their music could use a little sense to the notes. The tempos, clarity, aggression, whatever are all excellent. But I guess they did it all intentionally so whatever man.
griffknox 3 years ago
i kinda get what u're saying about the chromatics but i don't think the complexity of the note combinations is what's important here... i think it's more timing and dissonance... the only time the scales are important is when a discernable melody is present...
