I'm a little confused that suddenly a little boy runs past them (dream sequence?) and stops running right on the rails. Additionally In my opinion the girl wanted to die, since she apparently just stopped running, instead of really pushing or dragging the boy away (there was only one train, she could have easily jumped on the other rails the moment the grabbed the boy.).

3) There's no such thing as emo sadness. There may be a lot of dark themes but that's very common in anime/manga. Even FMA is extremely depressing at points.

Even if Light's death was foreshadowed, the scene was sad, not only because of the death of a character I sided with but also because it meant that the beautiful dream of a better world could never be realized. I for one would've done pretty much the same as Light, so I could pretty much relate to him and wish for his success. It wasn't just his death that I found sad, but also the fact that he had gotten so close to realizing his dream, but failed due to a stupid mistake.
