That last comment below is just typical of youtube newbishness, don't worry, I am a rapier instructor from the UK and will gladly comment objectively. Footwork is solid, just a little rigid, but better than most, there is little commitment to lunges or passes, though when fighting opposing hands, left against right, as is here, that is quite common, theres some good stuff here, just need to commit to full lunges/pases, most don't have the balls to post vids of their stuff, so thanks and goodluck
Actually, our style (and based not one this video, but one of the smallsword videos that I've posted) has gotten at least two positive reviews from a well known Italian rapier teacher/author and, an English smallsword instructor.
I'd trust their comments over your arm chair quaterback blather anyday.
It's a solid and, effective style. Even if you don't understand it. However, if your ever in the Atlanta area, give them a call. They're a friendly bunch and, would take you up on your challenge.
Thanks, although we tend to fence mentally as if it is a real duel. If your hit, it's not just a safe tap from an epee, but it means that you've been pierced with a blade, which could be very dangerous. I think that's the correct mental state for rapier fencing. Unlike boxing, where you know you'll be hit, in fencing, you don't want to be hit.
Great video! Are you focusing on any style or master? It looks like you are adapting modern fencing to the rapier correct? Oh, remember your not on the strip anymore! you can move around your opponent and use voids and such. Keep it up!
The style is Eddie Floyd's adaptation of everything he's learned over the years. If by modern, you mean the current style of Olympic fencing, then no. I think the classical style which I've read was considered modern fencing before WWII had a big influence.
Interesting, I have been studding earlier periods, Cappo Ferro, Di Grassi, and Swetnam. All fun stuff! My tips would be to keep your dagger more forward, its for defense, the further away from your body, they more time it has to react and meet your opponents blade, but that would also require changing up how you hold yourself, position your shoulders, but keep playing with it!
i think the 18th century smallsword with its point based system is a more efficient way of fighting, it is the basis of modern fencing. As you can never take the modern fencer out of a man it will always be fencing with R&D.
That the system of Rapier = Attack, Main Gauche = Defence became obsolete as more defensive rapier techniques evovled, that I can definitely see.
That the main gauche/off-hand dagger completely fell out of grace, I do not quite understand, though. Maybe two-weapon fighting isn't to everyone's taste or talent, but it should still have had some role to play.
No footwork? The footwork is fine! The measure part, or what we call distance is likely due some lack of technical experience of one of the fencers, along with the retreating. Parry/riposte are part of it, but retreating while guarding is needed because we view this as trying to approximate a real fight.
What he meant was that they dont move enough. In my opinion its a common mistake for new fencers. And what he meant by measuring is that they attack from to far away, which makes it look like they arent trying to hit oneanother. That in turn is understandable as those weapons are relatively usafe, especialy when you dont seem to use any kind of protective pants.
Actually, they are relativel the oppositte. The worst injury I gotten was a bruise. The double-wide epees flex easily under pressure, but we do wear solid protection on top and, underneath.
Please explain why you think the attacks are made out of time and, specifically why they are doing something wrong? Also, why don't you think they have any knowledge of measure, or distance.
The swords were made by our founder(he's the video fight master) Eddie Floyd. The blade is about 42 inches long and, the weight is about 2 pounds, 8 ounces.
Thanks. Too bad your in the Northwest. We're in the Southeast. I'm not that familiar with standard saber fencing, but I think what we do is an effective sword art. It's also a lot of fun.
Eddie Floyd, is the best sword fighter in the world today.....Great clip!

They are fighting in a modern fencing stance with the feet at right angles which was not even thought of until 200 years after R&D was obsolete.

You are correct, Sir! However, we like our stance just fine, feeling it to be the best based on our qualifications for what is "best."

Do you think rapier and, dagger really became obsolete, or just out of style?
