Hey, thinking of investing to have the exact same set up. Just wondering how you're gettign the headphone output? I know the Hercules mk4 doesn't have a headphone jack so are you using an external soundcard? If so, which one?
hey man i really need help:( i just bought a Hercules Dj Console MP3 for Mac. It came with Traktor Hercules Dj Console Edition. However i have virtual dj for mac and i wanna use it. Firstly, i cant seem to map alot of the functions i want like if i were to map deck A's equalizer, it will auto map for the other side. PLUS when sound comes out thru my speakers its all noisy and distorted. HELP NEEDED THANK YOU SO MUCH
guys i am planning on buying one of these i mean the dj control steel.i have virtual dj etc and i have my own mixer-EQ and my own sound system.also i have my own amp but what i want to know is how can i listen a preview of the song that i'm mixing without the sound escaping to my amp and my sound system so i can mix perfectly.what will i need?just any soundcard or something else too? and i imagine that there is an adjustment on virtualdj to do that with a sound card.sorry for english i am greek.
why in the hell would you buy this version and be forced to dish out extra money on a soundcard when the other one comes with a sound card...FOR FREE!
@Apilak simple; when you already have a pro sound system or DJ booth you simply connect this device trough your laptop and that's it. Then you don't need the extra soundcard because you use the equipment / DJ booth for this...
@Apilak Two options with the RMX; you use the internal sound-card's 'audio out / output' (red & white colored) and connect it from there to a channel on the mix panel in the DJ booth, or you can connect your laptop's 'audio out / output' port to a channel on the mix panel, the same way you would do with the Steel.
@digitrich well for some reason the audio doesn't come out of my laptop when i hook up my hercules to it it only comes out of the RMX's audio out/ output
@WatchMusicTV sound card = audio card; the hardware piece in your computer thats responsible for audio... It can also be a chipset on the motherboard instead of a card.
pleease tell me how you go this to work with your external sound card! i jsut get static distortion when i try set my virtual dj settings to two sound cards. i have both sound cards set to the same hz and everything
thanks for the reply digitrich and should i change any setting on virtual dj and it would be great if you put up a video demonstrating the settings on virtual dj and how to control the volume and other stuff for the headphones on steel and where can i get a cheap sound card and how much will it cost cause i was planing on buying the numark dj io but its about $130au and i don wanna spend so much on a sound card so please help me out with this.
You're welcome! you don't have to spend that much on a USB soundcard, unless you wanna work into a pro environment with the Steel. When I started looking for a USB card I also came up to the numark and other Pro DJ USB soundcards, but a simple cheap USB STICK soundcard will do the trick. Mine cost less than 20€ or 30$ and you can find them all over the internet or in a local store. Are you gonna work on a Mac or Pc? I'll sea if I can make a setup-video to.
hey i am planing on buying the steel dj console and digitrich iv gone through all the comments you have put up and good work bro but i still just wanna know tat if i bought a cheap soundcard and connected my headphones to it will i hear both decks playing at the same time or can i listen to only deck A while deck b is on master or vice verse like other dj mixers this is the only issue i have other than that im waiting to get myself a steel console.
Even with the cheap usb soundcard were you're headphone will be plugged in, it's possible to hear both decks at the same time in the headphone. You can choose to pre-listen to only deck A or B, but with the 'Monitor knob' you can adjust the mix of what's being played on your headphones - the track youre cueing up in relation to the overall mix. This button is next to the headphone volume knob.
I've tested this both on MAC and PC, the same setup; the Steel with a extra USB soundcard. There's a small difference in setting the system up between MAC and PC; on a MAC you combine the internal soundcard of the mac with the external usb soundcard (you do this in the sound configuration panel on mac) so you're MAC will use both soundcards as one 4-channel soundcard. Then in VDJ (the software that comes with the Steel) you choose this 4-channel soundcard. So the Steel thinks you're using only 1
On PC your OS (WinXP or Vista) uses both of the soundcards, and in VDJ you choose in the setup the 'two soundcard setup'
Both have the same result; you can listen to both decks at the same time in your headphone (and hear the mix) or listen to one deck at a time. Hope this helps you out.
How are you able to hook up headphones so you can cue up the music? I have one of these and I don't know what I need to do so? What is that little thing thats lit up on the side of your laptop?
You hook up the headphone into your PC or laptop or external mix panel when working with other DJ equipment.
The little thing on the side of the laptop is an external USB soundcard where my headphone is plugged into, because the speakers are connected to the only headphone port my laptop has. So if you're working on a laptop, you need a extra cheap usb soundcard, if your working on a desktop you need a 4-channel soundcard.
where did you buy the C-Media Speedlink external USB soundcard stick and how much was it, also are there any other products like this, just so i can check my options
I bought mine at a local shop called 'MediaMarkt' and it cost me less than €20 There are websites selling them less than €15 but then you have shipping costs etc.
i recently received the steal and i cant get it to come out of my headphones will that usb thing help but the problem is i have vista and most dj software works on xp no vista so will it work is my only question
heyy i have this the steel. i need help with the setup with speakers and headphones. i got headphones but ill get speakers how would i set this up. also i have a regular macbook.
No that's not an option. You can't plug a mic directly into the Steel, however the Steel is made to be used in a 'pro DJ boot setup' where you'll have your external amp, CD players, turntabels and mixpanel, and that's where you should plug the mic into.
Speakers are hooked up into the headphone/audio out/speaker port on the MacBook Pro. (this is the same port, you only have one, that fits an audio 3,5mm standard jack to hook up speakers, a headphone or an audio-out cable)
Yes you can plug this straight away into your computer and start using it! The only cable the Steel has is a USB cable for connecting to your PC, it also get's the power trough this cable.
You can pre-listing deck A or B separately or you can pre-listen the mix also, so you'll hear deck A and B at the same time in the headphone, just like it would sound on the master out channel.
Just to confirm you do need the external card for pre listening to both tracks at once? I have a setup with the steel going strainght to my lapop then both my headphones and speakers going into the laptop (2 headphone slots). Problem i have is that they both play the same audio, so instead of previewing the mix on the headphones and then moving the crossfader over to get it on the speakers, i can only here what the crossfaders on at that point
Both devices are good and perform well. It depends on what you're looking for. If you are a DJ with equipment you should go for the Steel (no soundcard on board) If you don't and want easy setup go for the rmx. The rmx is one year older than the steel, and some flaws in the rmx they've improved in the steel. If your into becoming a 'bedroom' DJ, both devices should get you started! The Steel is cheaper, although it's more advanced than the rmx, simply because they left out soundcard hardware.
so if i would buy the steel, i need a soundcard, but which should i buy. and i heared that the soundcard from the rmx is not so good. Or is der any other midi dj controller what you recommend : P
You don't actually 'need' a soundcard to use the Steel, you only need the soundcard when you hook it up to a single PC that has no 4-channel soundcard. If you intend on using the steel in a DJ environment, you can connect the Steel to a laptop (with a normal internal 2-channel soundcard) and use the out-line from the laptop to connect to the amplifier of the DJ booth. Your headphone would then be connected on the mix panel in the DJ booth. In this setup you don't need the extra soundcard.
If you hook the Steel to a single PC or laptop, and you will connect speakers directly to the laptop (mostly trough the headphone port on the laptop) you have a problem to connect your headphone. (because a laptop only has one headphone connection and its used by the speakers) In this case u need an extra soundcard to connect on your laptop (trough USB) so you can plug in your headphone. A simple cheap usb soundcard will do the trick, regardless the quality, it's only for pre-listening the songs
Your WAY better of buying the Steel and (if needed) a new soundcard. the Steel has far better functional capacity. It has twice the effect-functionality as the RMX, plus on the steel you can knob-adjust the effect's parameters. Furthermore, on the Steel, ALL buttons are lighted, and it has a slick new design. Steel ALL THE WAY!

Yes you can plug this straight away into your computer and start using it! The only cable the Steel has is a USB cable for connecting to your PC, it also get's the power trough this cable.
digitrich 2 years ago
so do the tracks come from the program that comes with the control steel?
willybainter 2 years ago
No, there aren't any tracks provided with the Steel, you have to load your own tracks / tracklist into the system.
This works easy; you can select a folder holding your mp3 / music files, or you can use the playlists you've created in iTunes.
digitrich 2 years ago
this is amazing! can i hook this up to a normal macbook?
