libertarianism originally was synonimous with anarchism or socialism. it meant a consistent critique of authoritarianism, not only pertaining to the state but in social dynamics (family, church, etc.). it challanged capitalism on it's likeness to feudalism in terms of distribution of property which lead to de facto rulership and even statism.
that's why the anglo-american usurpation of the term is wrong.
I disagree with Chomsky about rights at 3:45 where he states: “they won rights from struggle, not gifts from above.” Our Rights of: Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness are part of the Laws of Nature. These Rights apply to all life and social systems throughout the world and they existed before humans. See the proof at: watch?v=tdNYVZQYJqI
Interesting that what Chomsky refers to as traditional "Libertarian" principles are the exact opposite of what the Right Wing "Libertarians" of today call for.
@Diosibundo I recently read an article from one of these so-called "libertarians". It was about how he served as a juror on a marijuana smuggling case. They gave the smuggler 10 yrs. in prison and then had the nuts to joke with the judge about "sampling" the guy's product. Not only was the guy proud of what he did, he actively defended it when some actual libertarians had the temerity to call him out on his BS. Then he smeared his critics as juvenile and possibly un-american. (cont.)
I identify as an anarcho-libertarian, and it angers me to no end when people like I mentioned above make a mockery of my principles all while claiming they're part of the club. Nothing could be further from the truth.
@christopher81818 Chomsky is completly right on Libertarianism. modern Americans who identify with the Libertarian Party are the exact opposite of the Libertarians of the 18th and 19th century.
That's because left wing libertarians are completely logically contradictory. They believe in the fairy tale human nature of collectivism, of people all voluntarily working toward an aim that is for the benefit of the "common good". Of course this is utter bullshit, as something obvious as taxation shows, people will only care about others so much and would "need" to be forced to adhere to collectivist ideology. For that reason, left-libertarianism must rely on force or fail.
@tridentmovies The point being, that only an individualist libertarianism can succeed, as collectivism is still possible but only on voluntary grounds, whereas a collectivist libertarianism must rely on force whenever an individualist will make any contract on a voluntary basis if those are not in line with SoLib. If i wanted to be someone's "wage slave" because division of labor creates better results for me you'd have to stop me from a peaceful act, thus acting like a statist.
@tridentmovies: I'm a left libertarian but i dont believe in collectivism. I think those who work in the factory should own them. That doesnt mean individuals cant pursue their own self interest. That just means that individuals can exploit other individuals through wage slavery.
