I think the 1985-86 Celtics would struggle against the 1995-96 Bulls. First off, the Celtics had nobody that could come close to guarding Jordan. He scored at will against them in 1986 and was a much better player in 1996. He also had much better teammates in 1996. The athleticism of Pippen and Kukoc would create match up problems for the slower Celtics. On the other hand, Pippen's long arms and lateral quickness make him the perfect player to slow down Bird.
I like Bill Walton's take on who is the best of all time. Why the need to choose? Watch Bird play on these videos, and there's no way Jordan could compare in passing and overall court sense. Watch Jordan, and there is no way Bird could dee up and score in as many creative ways that Jordan could. Maybe it should be more like baseball; Pick the best players at their positions. Even that's insanely difficult, it depends on how good the league is at the time, and what a team needs, passer, scorer
What this doc doesn't show was that the Rockets actually DID fight bravely in the 81 and 86 series, but these idiots made it seem like they just swept them aside. I'm not just saying this because I happen to be a Rockets fan. Sure both series were in 6 games but the 81 Rockets were 40-42 and the 86 team was championship quality (they crushed the Lakers 4-1) but not quite on par of the 86 Celtics. I think they would have beaten the 87 Celtics but like them they suffered injuries too.
What makes 80's basketball pretty is easy points, no solo actions, maybe like larry shooting for the buzzer win or smtng :) but everything else was TEAM, not like today, let's give Kobe score 6 from 26 shots and stuff... :)
The 86 Celtics team are loaded with greatness all around. I have to put them my top 5 greatest NBA teams ever. I would love to see this Celtics team against the 87 Lakers
@WillC Gotta say I think the 86 Celtics would've crushed the 87 Lakers. They were also great, but it took them 6 games to beat Boston in '87, all tough battles, with McHale playing on a broken foot & Walton injured, and they still needed Magic's miracle hookshot and Bird missing a buzzer-beater by a centimeter. I don't think any team could beat the '86 Celtics
MJ might have scored 63 on the Celts himself, but they were swept in four games, so even if he scored a 100, what's the point if he loses? This team would have eaten the Bulls in their best year... Who could match up with Walton, Parish, Bird, and McHale? Not taking anything away from "da Bulls," but besides Jordan and Pippen, their scoring options down low would have been nullified.
MAN.......I get so sad when I think how much Len Bias could have helped the Celtics in the 87 season......and beyond. Some sports writers say he was the greatest to never play the game. :(
naw, people give MJ the best player ever title but bird was doin his moves before jordan came along and if you think about it bird wasnt even that athletic, he couldnt run fast, he couldnt jump high, he just worked his ass off and used his wits
@Comictalent The Lakers ran them off the floor in 6 games in `85 and `87. They just didnt match up well with LA. Boston was a great team though. The 87 Lakers were just a machine. Magic had reached his peak. He was an impossible matchup once he starting posting up. If you doubled him you were in trouble and no guard to stop him one on one down low.
That is the best team I ever saw. The Celts are also right up there.
@ExplosiveThinMan A good clue to how the championship would go at the end of the year in the eighties was the two games that the Celtics and Lakers would play. In 86 the Celtics won both regular season games which makes me think the Lakers would have been crushed in 86.
That might be true. They were both great teams. I think if either one wasnt 100% hungry or focused that year they would lose. Bill Walton made a pretty big difference. When he was in the game they played some of the most beautiful basketball ever seen.
In `86 the Lakers were still counting on Kareem too much. He was showing his age. The next year Magic became the #1 option. He got his post game going. At that point he became the best player in basketball.
Boston mightve won but I think it goes 6 or 7 games probably. The Lakers are going to win on their home court. Remember they still had a huge speed advantage over the Celtics and they would run them out of the buildiing from time to time.
But I would agree the Celtcis would beat them that year overall.
I have read his book, and listen to many press interviews he has done. I have never heard a bad word about him from anyone who has known him. He seems like a good guy to me. I think he was a little difficult with the press because he was shy. He could also be arrogant like most champions, but to say he was a horrible person is being over dramatic. Hitler was a horrible person, Bird is human.
@Flipper79able you havent heard some of the stories ive heard about him, he called a lady in a store an oaf because she couldnt answer one of her questions
Listen I come from a small town where a really famous person grew up too, and there are a lot of people who say he is an asshole and the other half says he is a really nice guy. The bottom line is people are going to say all sorts of shit about you when you are famous. One lesson you should learn is don't judge people till you meet them yourself. Then you can talk...until then try and keep an open mind and don't be swayed by bullshit.
i come from a small town too and yes, a famous person grew up too. Im FROM SOUTHERN INDIANA AND I DONT HEAR BULLSHIT ABOUT BIRD AND NEVER HEARD A POSITIVE THING ABOUT HIM. Dont tell me to 'listen'. I think I can judge someone when Ive heard over 25 different stories about a disturbed man is enough for me. Say all you want, I'm not swayed by 'bullshit'. And yes don't judge people till you meet them yourself, I agree, but when you personally met many people who have spotted him, it's hard to do
Every article I have read where people have personally known Bird has said nice things about him. Do the people you know have a better insight? I remember people saying the famous person in my town was an asshole cause he wouldn't give them an autograph on a day of from work. People will say all sorts of shit when your famous. Like I said I will reserve judgment till I meet either one of them. You should know better because a lot of people expect too much and have their own agendas.
@drewbert610 are you on crack? The 86 celtics probably have the 1 team out there that could neutralize Shaq between Parish, McHale, and Walton and he'd tire fighting them on the boards and would be in foul trouble all the time. Kobe and Bird cancel each other out, being guarded by Horry and DJ, but C's have the edge bc 2001 Kobe hadn't peaked yet.
The 85-86 Celtics had a record of 67-15. There were only three teams in the history of the NBA with a better record than that. The 01 Fakers had 56-26 record. Are you insane or retarded?
No booger sugar here. I meant the 00 Lakers, who also had a 67-15 record. Shaq was in his prime here and put up absurd numbers in the finals. There's no way Parish, McHale, or Walton are slowing down Shaq in one of his best seasons ever. Shaq's avgs in the Finals - 38 and 17. Don't forget that an extremely athletic Bryant was beginning to realize his athletic potential, and would have loved the opportunity to lock up Bird. If not Kobe, the Lakers had a number of solid defenders to throw at Bird.
Okay, you said the 01Lakers. Did you finally decide to do some research, ha ha ha? I think you did. There is no way to know whether the 01 Lakers would have beat the Celtics. This is something people do all the time, they compare one era with another. It's all speculation, they had the same record. Comparing different eras is a waste of time. Let's also not forget that everyone in the league was more athletic than Bird but he still dominated more than anyone cause he had coordination and brains.
Why....are you kidding? There is no way to tell that. A good portion of the league looked more athletic than the Celtics. But, they had incredible talent.
@drewbert610 Yes, they could. McHale would dominate that PF matchup. Bird would destroy the Laker's SFs. O'Neal would get his, but Parish would do well. Kobe is hit or miss in the clutch. In the Finals he is only a career 40.7% shooter. Walton coming off the bench for Boston would be big. Dennis Johnson would "D" Fisher's ass up and their wouldn't be the those wide open looks that he had that year.
it says a lot about the Bird vs. Magic debate that when both were in their primes Bird won back-back-back MVPs. if his back didn't fail him he'd likely have 2 more rings
The Celtics were greater than any Bulls team. That was before expansion. They werent so many weakass teams to pad your record on. The Bulls of the mid 90s would probably win 60+ games but not much more than that. The 80s were too tough,
I'll agree with this, the 80's Eastern Conference was more loaded, however to downplay the Bulls wins due to expansion is ridiculous. They held opponents to staggering 92ppg and a 12.2 Pt differential which is the BEST in NBA Ever. They had a far more dominant defensive team then the 86 Celtics Squad, and honestly...Jordan>>>>Bird.
Both benches and teammates played incredible, but I give the nod to the 96 Squad because of their much better defensive play.
@MrClipper23 "85-86 Celtics were the best team ever." Yup and its not even close. And imagine how much better they would have even been if Len Bias was there. He would've bridged the gap and kept the C's winning championships into the 90s.
i gree with you trevor321. But still i would put the 87 and 82 Lakers at the same level than my beloved Bulls. Actually the 91 Bulls were my favourite Bulls team, just because Scottie Pippen played his best playoffs. It was the only time that he`d played consistently on both ends of the floor. He was always great on defense but on offense he was very inconsistent.
As I posted on an earlier video its hard to see a 96 bulls beating the 86 celtics because of their frontcourt. Rodman was a great defender and trust me he could handle parish, walton or Mchale but not all 3. but aceroy your wrong about the 96 bulls not being a great offensive team they were an amazing passing team and the best defensive team in history. However people of the 90's do forget the 80's teams ran the court more often than the 90's. Also the celtics bench is too deep.
Aceroy, check your PM, I sent you one, since what I want to write, there's just simply not enough room here. Also, lol at me being a kid, I'm sure I'm older then you are here.
I do think Jordan is the best player I have ever seen but I also think the 86 Celtics were the best team. Have to wonder what if Len Bias had not died. I think they wouldve won a few more titles.
@MrTApples you cant really say taht, alot of guys LOOKED good in college and flopped in the nba, jordan didnt even look that good in college and became the greatest player to ever play the game.
fair enuff kid, thts cool, n ur welcum to w/e opinion u want man, but even magic n larry themselves say he was the best ever mj that is, and i am NAWT a mj supporter lmao ahah.
but neway yea kid, im cool with it, later man, peaz... :.///
haines...I'll tell you why MJ didn't win 3 straight, and it was shown, not because he wasn't qualified, but because the Media got sick and tired of making MJ win MVP's....that's why.
You compare any 3 years during his prime and see if anyone else did better then him, and you'll realize what I mean.
How stupid is that...you don't win more MVP's because the Media just simply wanted someone else to win other then you because they were tired of you being #1...what a joke.
1986 would Own the 1996 Bulls no Way they`re going to stopo that Machine Scorring, Passing, High %, Rebounding, Defensive and B-Ball Iqued Frontline with Bird-McHale-Parish-Walton..and you got passers nad shooters in DJ, Ainge, Siesting etc..
Wrong, Bulls were a superior defensive team allowing opponents with only 92 ppg per game, while the Celtics it was like 107 ppg's. A HUGE difference, not to mention, 96 Bulls were a better rebounding team, which negates fast breaks.
They had just as deep of a bench, and they could score at will, not to mention, they were better at the 3 pt line. Two Top-Elite Defenders with MJ and Pippen, and of course, MJ himself.
86 Celtics are not better then the 72-10 96 Bulls.
This Kid! A Frontline is composed of 3 Players that Affect the Game More than a Backcourt of 2, something 90s ballers never ill understand because there never was Grea Both Offensive and Defensive Frontlines in the 90s. There is a reason why Parish (on the 96 bulls) said they would not beat any the 80s Lakers, Celtics and Sxiers (especially 86 Celtics) Its impossible for a Team with Just a Good Trinalge Offense Defense but Bad Offensive/Passing Frontline to Beat A Total Team!
I think the Celtics were a better team and I am not going by stats, I am going by what I saw on the court. The 96 Bulls are probably the 5th best team I have seen, which is still very good. The 86 Celtics are unquestionably the best. Second best would be the 83 Sixers, with Malone, Dr. J, Tony and Cheeks, who swept the talented Lakers. Third? I am going with the 85 Lakers. Then a tossup between the Pistons 89 and Bulls 96.
Jordan could have won the MVP many more times than he did. The year Karl Malone won it was more or less a life time achievement award for Malone. He didnt have a better year than Jordan.
Magic also won the MVP in 1990 a year that Barkley probably should have gotten it. It can be a popularity contest some years.
I do agree that nobody was better than Bird when he was at his peak. Same with Magic when they were at the top of their games it gets no better. Jordan did go on longer though.
Jordan was great and he will go down in history as one of the alltime greats but there is no way he wouldve won 6 rings in Magic and Bird`s era. That is just a fact. Those teams were too complete inside and out.
better than jordan, jordan was lucky in the era he played in.
the only championship team he played in the finals was the lakers and they were with out 6time MVP kareem (and NBA all time leading scorer i might add)
I think the 1985-86 Celtics would struggle against the 1995-96 Bulls. First off, the Celtics had nobody that could come close to guarding Jordan. He scored at will against them in 1986 and was a much better player in 1996. He also had much better teammates in 1996. Jordan is not the greatest ever. YOu can debate Kareem and Russell were better.
Most MVP's, Points, All-Stars, All NBA's, and Top 5 MVP's go to Kareem.
Most Championships go to Russell. (and so would Final MVP's but they started in 69)
I'm sorry where does Jordan come up? Oh right nowhere. He leads in nothing except Finals MVP's where Russell would atleast tie if not beat him....

Look how white the NBA was back in the 80s. Haha

Haha, I think its a case of the Celtics being more white than usual.

I do think Jordan is the best player I have ever seen but I also think the 86 Celtics were the best team. Have to wonder what if Len Bias had not died. I think they wouldve won a few more titles.
trevorh321 3 years ago 21
@trevorh321 Len Bias would have challenged MJ for the best player of all time if he had a decent NBA career, he would have been amazing.
MrTApples 1 year ago
@MrTApples you cant really say taht, alot of guys LOOKED good in college and flopped in the nba, jordan didnt even look that good in college and became the greatest player to ever play the game.

ry3304, i didnt hate on MJ, just think Bird is better, Magic Johnson as well.
Argue with this point then.
Bird, Russell and Wilt only players to win 3 straight season MVP's, Sorry MJ couldnt do that.
Dont get me wrong MJ was a freak but just not as good.
anyway its only my opinion dont get too worked up.
haines1979 3 years ago
fair enuff kid, thts cool, n ur welcum to w/e opinion u want man, but even magic n larry themselves say he was the best ever mj that is, and i am NAWT a mj supporter lmao ahah.
but neway yea kid, im cool with it, later man, peaz... :.///
ry3304 3 years ago
haines...I'll tell you why MJ didn't win 3 straight, and it was shown, not because he wasn't qualified, but because the Media got sick and tired of making MJ win MVP's....that's why.
You compare any 3 years during his prime and see if anyone else did better then him, and you'll realize what I mean.
How stupid is that...you don't win more MVP's because the Media just simply wanted someone else to win other then you because they were tired of you being #1...what a joke.
Still, Larry is a BEAST.

On a second note, I regard the 1986 Celtics as one of the BEST teams of all time...here's my Top 3 list...
#1 1996 Bulls
#2 (tied) 86 Celtics/87 Lakers
TrueSephiros 2 years ago
1986 would Own the 1996 Bulls no Way they`re going to stopo that Machine Scorring, Passing, High %, Rebounding, Defensive and B-Ball Iqued Frontline with Bird-McHale-Parish-Walton..and you got passers nad shooters in DJ, Ainge, Siesting etc..
AceroySangre 2 years ago
Wrong, Bulls were a superior defensive team allowing opponents with only 92 ppg per game, while the Celtics it was like 107 ppg's. A HUGE difference, not to mention, 96 Bulls were a better rebounding team, which negates fast breaks.
They had just as deep of a bench, and they could score at will, not to mention, they were better at the 3 pt line. Two Top-Elite Defenders with MJ and Pippen, and of course, MJ himself.
86 Celtics are not better then the 72-10 96 Bulls.
TrueSephiros 2 years ago
AceroySangre 2 years ago 2
I think the Celtics were a better team and I am not going by stats, I am going by what I saw on the court. The 96 Bulls are probably the 5th best team I have seen, which is still very good. The 86 Celtics are unquestionably the best. Second best would be the 83 Sixers, with Malone, Dr. J, Tony and Cheeks, who swept the talented Lakers. Third? I am going with the 85 Lakers. Then a tossup between the Pistons 89 and Bulls 96.

I would have loved to watch that game, one can only dream. :(
Elmaln 2 years ago
Jordan could have won the MVP many more times than he did. The year Karl Malone won it was more or less a life time achievement award for Malone. He didnt have a better year than Jordan.
Magic also won the MVP in 1990 a year that Barkley probably should have gotten it. It can be a popularity contest some years.
I do agree that nobody was better than Bird when he was at his peak. Same with Magic when they were at the top of their games it gets no better. Jordan did go on longer though.
ExplosiveThinMan 2 years ago
Jordan was great and he will go down in history as one of the alltime greats but there is no way he wouldve won 6 rings in Magic and Bird`s era. That is just a fact. Those teams were too complete inside and out.
ExplosiveThinMan 3 years ago 2
agreed!!
terrorofsesameST 3 years ago 2
better than jordan, jordan was lucky in the era he played in.
the only championship team he played in the finals was the lakers and they were with out 6time MVP kareem (and NBA all time leading scorer i might add)
