You know its funny that I can't think of any faith but ours (Christianity) that's most exalted figure (Jesus) was humilitated, touchered and eventually killed for those viewed by said faith as sinful (which is all of us). Or for that matter I can't even think of single faith that's central figure is brutally murdered. I'm probably one of the happiest people you will ever meet. But what no one knows... I used to be severely depressed. I was raised to be a Jesus freak and have a near perfect life, but something wasn't right. If i didn't have my church family and best friend (also Jesus freak) to keep lifting me up with reminding that God is Love and that my life is worthy, i would have taken my own life.

@bluetec123 I lived an atheistic life and I was painfully aware of how meaningless my life was. Then my friend reached out to me and got me involved in church and I turned my life to Jesus. The most incredible sense of encouragement and security washed over me; it was like seeing from black and white to color. He made me necessary to live! Just please, if you haven't experienced a relationship with Jesus, do NOT say that it is "much more freeing."

@bluetec123 Isn't that what Christ teaches? To help & serve others...? Even if He isn't real (which He of course is), isn't what the Bible tells us to do a good thing? And for 2 straight years I went to the Salvation Army thrift store two days a week, and I keep the bookshelves in order. I also donated blood every 28 days to those less fortunate, refusing to accept the money for personal reasons. Now that I have Jesus in my heart, leading my life, everything I do has meaning.

@Athmel And also, you have COMPLETELY missed the point of creation. God does not demand "obedience" to get to heaven. How could He? Who told you that? NONE of us are perfect. If God exists, then He is perfect and so is His heaven. He can't let what is unperfect even touch what is perfect because then what is perfect also becomes unperfect. We all suck at life, that's why He sent His perfect Son to become human and take the punishment of hell for us on the cross. All we have to do is accept Him.

You know its funny that I can't think of any faith but ours (Christianity) that's most exalted figure (Jesus) was humilitated, touchered and eventually killed for those viewed by said faith as sinful (which is all of us). Or for that matter I can't even think of single faith that's central figure is brutally murdered. It's not unique for faith's single figure to be greatly exalted in this life and the next but it is for them to be brutally murdered.

I came to know Christ on Feb 20th 2011, at 20 years old. I had just got out of a 5 year relationship, that I thought would end in marriage. I thought I was in love. But I know why it didn't last. I'm probably one of the happiest people you will ever meet. But what no one knows... I used to be severely depressed. I was raised to be a Jesus freak and have a near perfect life, but something wasn't right. If i didn't have my church family and best friend (also Jesus freak) to keep lifting me up with reminding that God is Love and that my life is worthy, i would have taken my own life.

@sellie212 I, myself, don't know why some Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormon's accost people at their door. Or why some Christians missionaries head over to countries in which have a religion in place. Or why some religious Africans use children in human sacrifice rituals. Or why they picket funerals with hate signs. Or why they sometimes volunteer their own time and money to help others.
It's almost as if people are individuals and thus have individual motivations! Ah, the mysteries of life!

@bluetec123 I lived an atheistic life and I was painfully aware of how meaningless my life was. Then my friend reached out to me and got me involved in church and I turned my life to Jesus. The most incredible sense of encouragement and security washed over me; it was like seeing from black and white to color. He made me necessary to live! Just please, if you haven't experienced a relationship with Jesus, do NOT say that it is "much more freeing."

@bluetec123 Isn't that what Christ teaches? To help & serve others...? Even if He isn't real (which He of course is), isn't what the Bible tells us to do a good thing? And for 2 straight years I went to the Salvation Army thrift store two days a week, and I keep the bookshelves in order. I also donated blood every 28 days to those less fortunate, refusing to accept the money for personal reasons. Now that I have Jesus in my heart, leading my life, everything I do has meaning.

You could be the most generous, and kind person ever, and still get sent to Hell because you have no knowledge of Jesus or God. And people like Pat Robertson, who I think teeters the line of evil, is saved because he follows some laws and truly believes in Jesus. That is repugnant to me, and I cannot accept it.

@rkm8192 This doesn't work. I've always believed God was meant to be frightening. You can't work all that majesty and kindness in there, then say he also engages in petty cruelty. Which is what I would argue sending non-evil people to hell is.
Also, the implication that only the obedient are spared from hell, and not the just, good, or innocent is infinitely disheartening to me.

If there is no God then EVERYTHING is permissable and NOTHING is meaningful. The words "just" or "goodness" have no meaning because there is no perfect standard to compare anything to. What's evil to you might be good to me. So how could you look at anyone and say they are a "good" person when their version of "good" is different than yours?

Moral relativism wasn't my point. My point was that God rewards only the obedient. The obedient, fortunately, have rules that will coincide with most social agreements.

@DDaddy1000 I think God shouldn't reward those who simply 'toe the line' to avoid going to hell. I think if God interprets Obedient = Good, then I unfortunately must reject it. There's helping someone because you care, and there's helping because you want your 15 minutes of fame.
I said to follow the law to ensure peaceful coexistence with others. Using the law to tyrannize or murder the downtrodden doesn't fall under that umbrella.

Just a mindless combination of proteins and amino acids. What is so important about "life" that we should all be "peaceful" if we're made up of the same material that trees are. Just kill everybody. Who cares? It would actually be better for the planet if humans did die. We are ruining this planet.

@DDaddy1000 We makes laws. Men. We make them so we can live in a functional society that benefits the majority of us. Being 'evil' is detrimental to a society. I don't believe a society in the world functions without some set of rules in place. We are more complex than snails or rats, and (un)fortunately have the arduous task of finding meaning in our lives. Why? I don't know.
While I don't believe we're innately good, I don't believe we're innately cruel or rapacious either.

@DDaddy1000 You don't have to care, that's fine. But nor do they have to put up with your petulant emotional crisis. Life is not all about you, or your rewards. And maybe those people found their own meaning. I believe their lives are equally valid to yours, more so if they aren't being inhumane to others.
That you would disregard it and hurt them because you have nothing is the height of arrogance.

@DDaddy1000 Who cares if we're just animals? Most animals don't slaughter for fun. Some even create partnerships with other species to ensure their survival. There are billions of people in the world, and I cannot speak for even a tenth of them. I know how awesome it would be to not have to think and just have answers. But, c'est la vie.
That I may be an infinitesimal part of the universe doesn't send chills up my spine, so your last point is lost on me.

What is so important about "survival?" And why didn't society crash and burn before it figured out the laws we should all live by? Is society making this world a better place? I would argue that we're making it worse.
And YOU are the one that said our lives are valid. That makes no sense if there is no God. It seems like I'm not the one not using my thinking cap here.

@DDaddy1000 Without survivability, we die. People don't typically want to die, so they try not to. Every society since the dawn of man set rules in place to ensure that they don't die, even ones that have never heard of Jesus.
We've reached an impasse because you refuse to accept that life without God is worth living. I don't agree. I enjoyed yesterday. Other people enjoy their families, or charity, or religion. Individual purposes for individuals.

My ideals are fine for me. If I suddenly find them without merit I will readjust my life. There is little to be gained in stubbornness for the sake of saving face or pride.

@DDaddy1000 And to answer your question. Humanity's goal is to survive, like all animals, not make the world a better place. That is a choice limited to humans. Though making the world healthier would help stave off our inevitable extinction.
If you're asking why in a philosophical sense, and asking for an objective answer that holds true for everyone... then I don't know nor think it's possible to know.

Your instincts tell you what to do in order to survive. Your conscience tells you what you OUGHT to do or not to do in different situations.
Like if you see a child in a burning house you will feel two instincts. Your survival instinct tells you to stay away from the danger and your herd instinct tells you to save the child. Your conscience tell you you OUGHT to save the child. Even though the herd instinct is the weaker instinct of the 2

Instincts are like notes on a piano and conscience is like sheet music. It tells you what notes to play but it itself is not one of the notes. Where does the sheet music come from?

@Athmel And also, you have COMPLETELY missed the point of creation. God does not demand "obedience" to get to heaven. How could He? Who told you that? NONE of us are perfect. If God exists, then He is perfect and so is His heaven. He can't let what is unperfect even touch what is perfect because then what is perfect also becomes unperfect. We all suck at life, that's why He sent His perfect Son to become human and take the punishment of hell for us on the cross. All we have to do is accept Him.

Think of it like this. If a stranger came to me and said she's going to become a prostitute so she can get out of debt I would just tell her it's a horrible idea and go on about my day. But if my wife came to me with the same proposition I would shout and scream and throw things. Why? Because I love her.
And the Bible says God's love for me makes my love for my wife look like hate. God is Love with a capital "L."

]], its overwhelming sometimes i just want to break down and cry , I know i shouldnt be embarrsed of God but i just dont feel confortable breaking down crying in church , i feel the need to but i just feel so unconfortable at first , but one day i did it and it was amazing I had got the holy ghost and it was amazing i started breaking down and singing this song and Believe it or not im only 12 and it was an amazing experence, God is so amazing , and works in ways i dont understand but i love it

You see, if He cracked the sky open and revealed Himself to the whole world then we would all serve Him out of fear or "duty." But fear isn't what this is all about. LOVE is. He wants lovers. You're telling me the Creator of EVERYTHING personally reveals Himself to you and you would just go on living your life as you always have? No way. You would essentially be bound to God.
