  • It's good we see that she's not always "on"; despite that she's got something started here ~ that Billie thing is shining on through. She's a talent and a half. I love her, whacked or not.

  • haha guys maybe she's just really high.. give her a break

  • The album version is beautiful, this is horrible, she is FLAT and bad phrasing...and the over the top end flourishes by the piano player would make Liberace puke. She is a very good singer and song stylist, she should get this video removed, it hurts her reputation.

  • How to ruin a beautiful song

  • A qualidade deste video está denegrindo a imagem de Madeleine "Pierrô"

  • @gouveiaarthur Ela está ótima.

  • she's utterly brillz. this song is devastatingly beautiful-- that's kinda how she has to sound if she's going to really perform the piece.

    brava miss peyroux.

  • Excelente música e cantora

  • What I wouldn't give to see her live.

  • no mo mi sparo

  • she's playing with the tempo..tooo much...maybe?

  • ♫[iminent=5cjqzlR59l2]

  • I love Madeleine.... but this is terrible!! She seems drunk! lol

  • Very Talented SINGER... Just not a performer - for the stage/in concert.

  • Sorry girl, but that is just terrible. I'm just glad I didn`t go to see her live as I was intending to. Bit like Beth Nielson Chapman, brilliant as she is as a songwriter and recod artist she is pants live, just like this poor misguided girl. Out of time and tune. Hate to say it but just listen!

  • I get the singing under the note and eventually getting on top of it, or at least to it, the way Billie did, but I have to agree with others on this post - she's missing it for the sake of jazzing it up. This song is such a great number to do straight with subtle changes that the singer can add to make it his or hers. She's butchering this one badly. The piano is over the top too for this ballad. This was a depression-era song that should evoke true sadness, pain and optimism. This hurts!

  • Its just too slow. Pick it up Madeleine!!!! Your so much better than this! :(

  • her voice is... awesome...

  • A cavaquinho is merely a Brazilian ukelele but a little larger and often with steel strings rather than nylon strings. What a great band she has! (She's good, too!)

  • A cavaquinho is merely a Brazilian ukelele but a little larger and often with steel strings rather than nylon strings.

  • @cainmusic a cavaquinho is a portuguese string instrument. brazillians just made an adaptation of our version and use it in their music.

  • This is WONDERFUL. Some who are being critical I think are missing the point, that great jazz is improvisitional. Frankly this is a great direction for Madeleine, who while so wonderful, was risking becoming a Billie Holliday tribute artist. Here, she is in motion, making a person think of Sarah Vaughan or even Amy Winehouse, another artist who treads into dangerous turf often enough. But here Madeleine is actually CREATING. I think it is a wonderful take of the spirit of jazz and art

  • agregue esta canción a mis "favoritos" hace buen tiempo, jamas me cansare de oírla es hermosa

  • anyone got the ukelele chords 4 this song? plz??

  • that's the blues baby

  • É... não gostei. Ela inventou muito nesta música. Prefiro vê-la no "Don't wait too long", onde a lembrança da Billie Holiday vem à tona...

  • @Crisslett Não exagera! Ela canta fatasticamente de qualquer maneira, ela é a Billie h. encarnada em uma mulher branca !Até mais e bons vídeos ...

  • hey

lou say d grl b coo

  • Leiam muita informaçao em

  • jeez people - let the lady play and experiment a little. We get so pampered by lush production and 220 takes on each song, multi tracking, NotePerfect.

Boy - have a couple of shots of Pernod, lean back in your chair, listen to the girl sing, doesn't it make you want to meet her in a cafe and spend the evening with her?

Maybe you could title the video "Madeleine messing around with Smile".

  • i liked she is special kity

  • nobody remembers a critic.

  • This destroys the whole Holiday aura thing she does well on record--Billie 's physical style sealed the languid delivery which seems silly here.

  • Ah! People! This is a rehearsal. Just to let you know that brilliance doesn't come easy. She's gorgeous and so is the band. They found each other... eventually.

  • please please take this video down. This is a false representation of one of the most incredibly talented artists of our generation : )

  • I like this video. Really, ins't goog????

  • @ShipRock04 Hello....would you explain to me the meaning of your comment?Im sorry I dont get it......Thanks

  • kiz arkadasim seni daha yasli hayal etmis, buraya yazmami emretti. Hayat cok zor ulan

  • Not a performance I would like to remember her by....Fortunately all the other great recordings she has made, more than make up for this "whateveritis".

    No smiles for this.

  • ...timjmoran....I did a little research on her and I agree with you. She tunes-up in the beginning and is lost a little bit. She sings very well in tunes I have heard since my last post. Thx for your comment

  • Yeah, this is certainly an off night for her. thing

is,this doesn't represent her usual quality level of singing. I think she is trying to do her own interpretation of this tune, and makes some mistakes technically. Shame, 'cause Madeleine really IS a better singer

than this vid would have you believe.

  • This performance is awful...She is the "Henry Orient" of Jazz. This song is my punishment for the day. Her rendition of CARELESS LOVE, on the other hand, is outstanding along with Odettas'.

  • looks like someone did a wee on her wig.

possibly her best performance to date!

    tiny guitar. big spirit.

she comes across a bit like a bloke.

  • In my opinion is she drunk. Singing like this mmmmmm.....

  • she doesn't sound out of tune at all, she just sounds off beat or, one beat ahead of the beat... doest hat even make sense? haha whatever i know what i mean :) hahaha

  • This is really not one of her best performances

  • A wonderful voice and talent. I've always enjoyed her.

Have to say that I went to see her at a place called the Keswick theater several years ago and she didn't seem like a very pleasant player.

  • Youve got no idea... She is singing in so many different scales and tempos from one line to the next, that it is technically extremely difficult. Like it or not (and i do) it takes superb knowledge of music to do this. and if it wasnt a recording and you could hear the live thing, it is just addictive, you can hear a pin drop when she sings. And she's a renowned blues/jazz singer for 20 years now! She's worth seeing live definitely.

  • Sofia, I agree!

  • @sofiaithaka There is only one tempo. The tempo is consistent for the entire performance.

  • @sofiaithaka I'm not dissing here because she's normally on form, but this IS out of tune - if a musician is going to get modal it needs to be spot on, sorry.

  • @sofiaithaka ... grossartig!

  • @sofiaithaka It is beautiful (h)

  • @sofiaithaka It is beautiful

  • yah...studio version is better...here she's out of tune...screwing up the beat...wtf. this makes me think anyone can sing...

  • love it thanks

  • Probably she is trying to sing this song in a new way. That's also what the pianoplayer tries to do. (Or there's something wrong with her monitoring)

  • Comment removed

  • She sings here out of tune so many times ... i prefer listening to her on CD

  • I hear attempts at Billy Holiday here.

  • zzzzz.z.z.z.z....

  • mdaaaa...

yes,it is not the best performance I've seen. Maybe she had no mood to sing while recording. we all are humans such things happen :) Don't be so critical :)

  • She really sucks.

    Why Why Why?

  • I agree, where is that Holiday sound we hear in recordings? It is awkward.

  • Give me live music over the cut album any day, but she sounds way better in the studio. Wow! Is it just me? Where is that signature tone I'm longing for?? Please don't tell me they rigged her voice. Her not keeping up with the music has nothing to do w/ her voice/tone.

  • I love MP and have all her CDs, but her live performances are not often very good- I'm not sure what that's about- just don't let this video deter you from buying her CDs.

  • went to her live in Paris last tuesday. It was so so i must say...

  • There are times when she is as flat as a fart.....is this deliberate ...done in the name of interpretation of a classic number?????

  • Oh no

  • Hmmm... Not a fan i must admit.

I love to try new music and atleast i can say i've listened to her before I express my opinion and i have also listened to some of her recorded stuff and its just not my kind of music :) x

  • I hate to bash another performer, but, well, i'm not going to say a word, maybe she's advanced..really WAY advanced.

  • mm.. maybe she had a bad day.. her music it's really good.. i don't know.. she's out of tune... a lot of times.. wau.. bad thing.. anyway .. listen the records.. it's different.. bad thing what happened.. but.. everybody can have a rough night...

  • This is an ingenious interpretation of the song.

  • Goddamn, I love MP and I recommend her CDs to everyone who wants to listen, but I hope there was something wrong with the PA system on stage. She is out of tune too many times.

  • wide face? reduced beauty? bit of a bump on the lower front?

do i have to spell it out guys?

    yes, i was ...............

  • love this song like this version thanks :)

  • oh, i loveee this song.

  • What the hell happened here. She sounds as bad as she looks. Yikes! I saw her 4 years ago and half the time she looked like she'd eaten a bad clam. Not the greatest live performer but I like her records.

  • did you even listen to her music?

  • Of course, but once my ears started to bleed I had to stop

  • Comment removed

  • I just love Madeleine Peyroux! Beautiful performance and many thanks to the person who posted the video. Is that a cavaquinho she is holding?! Can't wait too see her in San Francisco at the SF Jazz Festival, on March 27.

  • No, that is a ukelele.

  • @ANDERSONLK The show is in Brazil, and I don't think that she uses a ukelele in a "regular basis", this is why I think it is a cavaquinho indeed

  • I think I heard someone in the audience kill themself

  • Ha!Ha!Ha! Good one!

  • me too! lol!

  • Instead of expanding your musical horizons - just stay with your complete Britney Spears collection dude. ( It is spelt ukelele btw. )

  • NO, it's spelled UKULELE

  • Man, this lady sucks...smile, you mean cry don't you and what's she been smoking? What the hell is wrong with her hair. Ukelale, next we have the kazoo

  • Really, how can you smile listening to that???

  • Gross

  • Don't know why she's holding the uke, she's not even playing it. She's making chords occasionally but not strumming. I've seen her live also, and she often does this with guitar. Her recorded version of Smile is much better than this particular performance. She looks rather haggard. Not her best.

  • I say her last year. It was quite a lovely show...and she was a sweetheart and and intelligent woman, quite funny too.

  • i'm going to see her in march also. was the show an intimate setting or a stadium style concert? was the crowd mostly old people?

  • The show was half intimate and half stadium, it was an outdoor concert. Yes, the people were older, however, me and my two friends were the teenagers. It was a nice concert nonetheless.

  • I love her so much!

  • Não percebeu? Ela não conseguiu afinar o instrumento...

  • Meu deus...

    totalmente fora do tom...

Adoro Maddie, mas ela devia estar fora de órbita nesse show...

  • Me duelen los oidos! Desentonada, lastima porque esta es una preciosa cancion. Necesita mas practica.

  • she is quite off key! Melody Fox

  • Voz fabulosa

  • like nina without the voice or style. whats the point?

  • She has an amazing voice..

  • Hmm.. she must be having an off day when I saw her she sounded much better. I really don't think that was par with her usual songs.

I remember when I saw her in concert last year she blew me away it was that good.

  • Who cares what she even looks like none of the great jazz singers were particulary good looking, haha. Do males just view her as a sexy singer over good writer and performer ? It's true that women get a harder time than the lads search emily remler. Ive seen bad performances from a lot of legends but because their legends they just say "look at his face when he makes bum note, hes mad with himself". She knows she's having a bad day she doesn't look happy...

  • Fair enough everyone, she's not perfect. If she was an amateur people would be less critical. If we didn't know how good she can be we would be less critical. Everyone has a bad day...

  • Why does she bother to tune her uke and then proceed to sing like a total highschool talent show entry. Her pitch is horrible. Come on girl. You are so much better than this.

  • Great, fabulous Madeleine.

    I'm in love !

    Jeff

  • She's still way better than most artists nowdays even if she's a little off. Great arrangements and backup, great phrasing - love her emotional depth she conveys and overall tone overcomes pitch problem for me - lot of which is style and her choice - so tasteful.

  • god, i love her music, but her performance is horrible in this video. And her visual style doesn't look like her video clips.

I think it was a bad day. But She is great.

  • I love Maddy but I think she does go out of tune around the 1.20 mark

  • I'm sorry but this is BAD :)

  • Why is bad??

  • The vocals are out of tune, she sounds drunk actually. And there's no power in her voice. And she's trying to sound like Billie Holiday...I could go on... :)

  • No.

She just has this kind of voice, it's her voice, she doesn't try sound like Billie Holiday!. Maybe for this reason and for she too sing blues you feel she sound like Billie Holiday. I think this women would be has some black ancestor, because her voice is more thick like a black voice! It's something genetic!

First time I listened she I thought she was Ella fitzgerald! She has a similar kind of voice than Ella Fitzegerald! A precious voice! But they sing diferent types of jazz.

  • I agree. The voice doesn't sound contrived at all. She's the genuine article, whether in or out of tune. Blues should be sung out of tune anyway, according to my feeble understanding of the blues.

She's really *magic* on "Dance Me To The End of Love", and "Walkin After Midnight". Haven't heard much else yet ... but will.

  • Why u sorry, there's no rule sayin' you have to like it. I love it personally and I ain't gonna apologise for that so I don't see any need for you to apologise for not liking it.

  • what sexist idiot is concerned about any female artist's weight? She's brilliant! Are male aritists scrutinized by their appearance or weight? Get over it.

  • Very negitive comments people seem to be making about this video. I would bet that on her worst day she is better than you judge"mental" fools on your best day.

  • Meant 2006, not 1966. Duh!

  • When was this done? When she recorded her first album over ten years ago she was very overweight. Is this an old video or is she back to being overweigh? I met her backstage in San Francisco in December 1966 and she was very slim.

  • who the hell cares whether she's overweight or not. get over it fool

  • The only fools in the world are those who refer to others as fools. Fools don't show respect for others' opinions. I'm a huge fan of Madeleine's and was making an observation, not a judgment. Having said that, she does not perform well in concert. Her CDs are much better. Now that's an opinion. Get the difference?

  • i agree partly but to be fair your last "opinions" are not at all - the terms "i think, in my opinion, personally.." etc would have been opinionated..the use of "does not" and "are" are used in factual statements..sorry.

  • I followed my so called "factual" statements up with the sentence "Now that's an opinion." BTW, if her singing were up to par no one likely would have commented on her weight. The issue was her performance, not her appearance. I'm also a huge fan of Jane Monheit and she is very overweight but that hasn't stopped music writers for suggesting she is one of the best jazz/Brazilian-influenced singers today.

  • is she on drugs thats worst jazz performance ive ever heard and seen the piano playing is SHIT too

  • what on earth is this?? is it a soundcheck? she's pitchy as hell...simon says, "no career in music for you!"

  • Qu'importe le flacon, pourvu qu'on ait l'ivresse

  • Omigosh I really love Madi's CDs but this is pretty awful. What has happened to her? Not a good performance, and she looks dowdy like she's put on weight and needs a good stylist and oh a haircut! I wouldn't expect or want her to be a fashion plate, but she has such a sexy seductive voice and a really pretty face, it's a pity that her dress sense doesn't match at all.

  • i usually dig mad but this is nothin to write home about
