best troll of 2010, i think you were right, lol, but yeah annotation says 2011, so whatever, worse slips could have happened, and coppercab is ok, his material is not just same old shit, so yay for coppercab
I hear the biggest issue is that not everyone used the site to view "pirated" videos (though to be honest the cost of buying the same movies/shows from a store is criminal).
Many people used it to share/store files related to school and work, artists and small business owners as well as students use it alot for collaboration projects/note comparing since it was easier to upload files/media to and share.
By removing this site, tons of original non pirated data was lost/blocked as well.
@SamiWheeler I don't want to play devils advocate, but it's the fault of the pirates in this case, majority of content of MegaUpload must have been movies, games and music (I'm guessing, but it's reasonable to think that considering that student project files are a lot smaller than a movie)
It's like if they would close a bar because owners were covering that people are dealing drugs there, a lot people were just drinking there, but there were illegal things happening
btw, yes, the FBI has no jurisdiction in NZ, that's why they get interpol to do the arrests for them, don't go crazy with the disinformation, any country can ask interpol to emit an international arrest warrant, there's no conspiracy here
was that penis slapping analogy really necessary? I mean, we know you obsess on penises, but could you spare us? we get it, you're gay, just tone it down, ok?
My issue with this arrest is it holds the hosts, not the file-pirates responsible. This tactic of attacking the share-sites has never worked. It only galvanizes pirates to organize and open more share sites. The only way to reduce file-piracy is to arrest and prosecute the pirates themselves. Fail deterrent is fail.
@SockMcLargeHuge that's why DMCA is in place, this takes away responsibility of the owner of a site for pirates uploading things there, but they need to remove copyrighted material if they are alerted by copyright holder, otherwise they will be also responsible. So they were guilty.
But I don't think anything will reduce piracy, not a single thing
@Trollsnews actually megaupload was shut down not because there were illegal files on the site and they couldn't take them all down, but because they were (very indirectly, probably accidentally) making money off piracy (probably cause some lawyers found a loophole, atleast from what i can read of the text)
Some say it was because they were going to open their own iTunes-like company called MegaBox, in which most of the profits would go to the artist (this would catch artists from Universal etc)
i know there is more download sites than only megaupload but the biggest bullshit here is that megaupload is the biggestand most visited sites pf the internet so basically every post of games,music,movies...ect contains megaupload links, and thats a pain in the ass because now we have to search deeper because the other download servers like rapidshare are a piece of shit or unpopular.
Anyway, It's not that damaging if megaupload is the ONLY site that the feds take down, but the same argument they used to take MU down can be used for alot of other filesharing sites and not to mention youtube. Since they mainly rely on users to flag copy infringing files, so if copyright holders feel as though other sites are slacking they could be taken down as well. That's probably my only major concern from this incident.
@DgraymanKicksAss actually not, the other sites are usually more careful, I think MU just got too cocky, so FBI was like "OK, then fuck you MegaUpload"
Torrenting may be superior way to download, as you don't have leave your browser up and just can queue up a bunch of downloads instead of downloading one by one, but here lies the problem, eventually within a couple months those torrents will have 0 seeds. So eventually if you want to look for older files that may have been available a couple years/months ago but now completely dead, filesharing sites like MU were a good alternative to archive such files so people could still find those files.
@DgraymanKicksAss Actually, you never had to leave your browser up when you were downloading files from filehosts....
You know there's a freeware program called jdownloader that can download files from filehosts and queue up a bunch of files instead of continually selecting a new file to download. Because mediafire ( and megaupload used to) doesn't have captcha for free users, the program can just continusly download files with out you having to check up on it....
@DgraymanKicksAss Megaupload was the 2nd best (Mediafire 1st) filehosting site for free users....
It always seemed to store files the longest compared to other hosters, you got the best speeds (a lot of times I can get around 2/mbs), no Captcha, easy interface.....
All those other cyberlockers suck so badly :(
I loved megaupload compared to torrents because I usually got the same speeds as a very good seeded torrent and I don't have to worry about companies tracking a torrent and sending
Megaupload DID take down infringing files, if I had a dollar for every time I've found a broken MU link I'd be half as rich as Dotcom. But the point is if MU can get taken down by the feds for not taking down enough copyright infringing files, can't youtube be in the same boat? I mean there are still so many songs on youtube that have been uploaded by random users that have been left up for a couple years now, and STILL haven't been taken down. Atleast MU didn't leave files up for years.
@Lorddark211 I don't think he would intentional bullshit us, but it could be a possibility.
Okay now a regular question, why is just a copy right holder saying it is copyrighted enough to take something down, for i know on youtube the users can fight back claiming it is not or it is a part of fair use? So why can't mega upload do the same, unless they are not a safe harbor, which i thought they were? Otherwise it should take a court case to prove it is indeed copyright violation.
@Seargent363 because on youtube you can fight back because it really might belong to you. But for example film studio owns the movie and if the movie is there and they didn't place it there, there is not much to discuss, they have to take it down
If the FBI can take megaupload down then why the fuck do we need S.O.P.A and P.I.P.A i think the answer is simple the government is afraid of the internet cause it help the people revolt in the middle east. *might not be true but it is what i think*
Actually, if you watch the AmazingAtheist he makes the analysis that shutting down Megaupload was the direct govermental responce to SOPA & PIPA failing, that this was to show the world that, whether or not it passed or failed, they still have the power to shutdown sites anyway.
@Shadowblood66 Yeah, basically according to AA, the goverment had the oppertunity to shut down Megaupload the whole the time, they were just using using SOPA & PIPA as justifications to do it and when they were shelved, the goverment decided to just carry out the termination anyway.
What the fuck FBI?! I mean, whilst it is acceptable to take down a website if it hosts illegal file downloads ( movies and games ) megaupload was a site where users could upload their own files that they had created! Couldn't they have at least just got rid of the files that were infringing copyright?
@EASTWICKgames actually that's what they wanted, that's why copyright holders were asking to megaupload to remove the copyrighted content, they really had their chance.
For example YouTube is able to do that, obviously it can be done
2:09 i rofled, but yeah, why did they have to wreck it for all of us? megaupload was a great supporter of mods for games, and now every old megaupload link is dead.
I also happen to be Czech but my English isn't very good. I would like it if you would have a Czech broadcast and stop being so self-hating and pandering to Anglo pigs.
And yes, megaupload being shut down has a lot to do with sopa no longer being a thing. Not a middle finger, but an example. You should have seen it coming though. I mean As I said, people were singing about megaupload all the time.
@SONYandMICROSOFT nope, I'm just saying that they are idiots because they made it easy. I read internation copyright law and DMCA once and I knew it would be stupid idea to do their business that way, they should have do it better to cover their ass in better way
While I agree Megaupload simply broke the law, the current prosecution by the US is simply draconian. They have no jurisdiction and the charges against the owners of Megaupload are downright retarded. They are being accused of running one of the largest copyright crime syndicates in the world. Are you fucking joking?
They also claim Megaupload is responsible for up to 500 million dollars in undermined profits by copyright holders, but they assume that 1 downloaded film = 1 film not sold.
@moccamonster but that's always the problem with piracy, you really can't measure anything. The reality is that if I donwload something, I wouldn't probably buy it ... but then why should I have it, when I didn't pay for it ... on the other hand if I like it, I will talk about it and someone else might buy it, so I'm helping.
My opinion is: if you pirate, don't make it obvious and easy to get caught
@Trollsnews I agree man. I think it's fair to say that if piracy didn't exist(somehow), yeah some folks would've bought movies/games/music instead of downloading it, but the issue is that the report equates every single download as a lost sale, which is simply false.
As for piracy as a whole, eh. I'd rather have that everyone just buys their stuff legally, but I doubt a big movie studio ever went bankrupt because their movie got pirated.
@moccamonster Seriously. I know I'm not exactly typical, but I end up buying most of the stuff I download. They just cant say how much money was lost or gained.
@WhoaKaela Well it's mostly related to the fact that if piracy didn't exist, not every single pirate would legally buy all the things they could download otherwise.
I mean I downloaded a couple of movies recently. If they weren't available online, would I have bought all of the bluray at like 20 bucks each? No. So saying that me downloading 5 movies at 20 bucks each = 100 dollars lost is simply a logical phallacy and a strawman argument used by the industries who support this draconian crap.

Killerthewolfdog 2 weeks ago
@Killerthewolfdog well sort of yes, it was ACTA, but on different level than people think
ACTA is an agreement between countries, they agreed to cooperate against piracy, and New Zealand and US were first countries to sign it.
But ACTA didn't bring any new legislation or anything, they could do it without ACTA as well.
ACTA does nothing, that doesn't current legislation already allows
