What he fails to realize is that the many forms of Jazz came out of creativity and self expression and there is nothng wrong with that. If there was no allowance for self expression in auto design we would all be driving the same style car..how boring that would be! Get off his back Pat and do you...I think you dress like your homeless Pat but you have a right to your own self expression just like Kenny does...your music is great but your personality needs a makeover too!
I think that Kenny G has had an opposite effect of the one Metheny describes, drawing people to jazz rather than repelling them. The guy has sold over 75 million albums. I'd like to think that at least some of these people were inspired to check out "real" jazz.
What repels people from jazz is not Kenny G, but elitism, the notion that jazz is a genre for snobs. Metheny, in his pretensions about what is and isn't "real" jazz, only affirms this stereotype.
Jazz is in an unique position in the cosmic scheme of things because it is the apex of galactic intelligence,,,, If the evil incarnate Kenny G is allowed to produce more of '''''the dumbest music there ever could possibly be''.,, It will destroy Jazz and we will have done a grave injustice to the universe,,,,,lol
JEFF LORBER WAS A BAND THAT STYLE RANGE BETWEEN YELLOW JACKETS IN THE BEGINNING AND SPYRO GYRA , BUT JAY BECKENSTAIN (SAX) WAS THE MASTER OF THE SMOTH JAZZ.
'''After all, since JAZZ IS fairly DEAD, we might as well enjoy picking over its Corpse''''', Metheny paraphrasing Charles Jincks,,,,,,,,,,some people might not think it is ironic,,,,but feuds made rap even more popular, no?
i dont really understand why pat metheny is so close-minded and has such such hatred for kenny g. Personally, i dont like kenny g either but i never expected from a musician like metheny to talk in that way.
Funny thing is, my mom listened to Kenny G when I was a kid and that's how I got into jazz. Now, Pat Metheny is one of my favorite artists by far. I listen to Bright Size Life over and over and over every day at work. Kenny G has it's place, until he brings Michael Bolton into the mix, then it's an abomination. Check out Jeff Lorber Fusion before Kenny dropped the remainingletters of his last name that followed G. He kicks ass back then..
I like both Pat Metheny and Kenny G. The music of each is good for its purpose. I am surprised that Pat made this comment publicly as his public persona is so positive and just about presenting his own music without looking at others. I remember hearing Kenny play live with Lorber when he was "Kenny Gorelick". He is an unbelievable musician. I do wish to hear more jazz from Kenny G but I understand his need to reach a commercial audience to put bread on the table. :-)
Yes like me, I'm going to help you learn about jazz. Just don't rip on my earth wind and fire 70's through back hair style. This is pretty sad for Pat to say this. I thought he had more class than this. And 95% of all rock is bad, wow. Too bad I'm not smart and esoteric enough to appreciate his stuff, I guess I'm not buying his cd and music because I'm not on his level and eschelon and I probably wouldn't understand. Maybe you and Yngwie should do an album together!
Pat's no better on guitar than Kenny G. is on sax. Kenny's tenor playing is KILLER, and yes, he can play through the changes. He used his BUSINESS sense and hooked up the soprano stuff, which I HATE, but which made him a household name. If you listen to Pat's 'We Live Here' concert, he sounds like a combination of very commercial Lee Ritenour, George Benson, maybe even a little Pat Martino, but not a jazz monster. I happen to like Pat's playing a lot, but he's not the essential Wes Montgomery.
I THINK ,RECORD LABELS OR BIG MEDIA , RADIO CORP ,ARE RESPONSABLES FOR THIS CONFUSION LABELLING KENNY G MUSIC AS A JAZZ.

For every terrible piece of music there's always going to be a knuckle-dragging moron whining when you criticize it, either because they like it or they just feel the need to defend everything. Well fuck that. People need admit that just because they like something doesn't make it good. I like Pringles, but I'll happily admit they're shit food that will kill me if I don't eat something better most of the time. It's the same with Kenny G: easy to swallow, bad for you.
KENNY G MUSIC IS ONLY" BUSINESS" EASY INSTRUMENTAL POP MUSIC TO BUY,BUT CAN KENNY G IMPROVI. WITH ALT NOTES ,OR CHORDS CHANGES??? I NEVER HEARD ANY OF HIS SONGS WITH THAT.(OR MAYBE KENNY G DIDNT FINISH TO STUDIE JAZZ. BUT I WILLTELL YOU "PHIL WOOD" IS THE HERO ,HE MADE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL JAZZ MELODY SOLO IN BILLY JOEL "JUST THE WAY YOU ARE"
@manguera9 I dont care, im a sax player and i have to teach accounting at night and a cpa in the day time...id love to have is job..playing for a living. I personally know his drummer. There good people!

Although I wholeheartedly agree with Pat on music such as Kenny G, I don't think he should frame it in the way. Kenny G is talented, he just plays crappy music to sell to the uninitiated. Unfortunately there is a huge market for Kenny G-like music and that's not going away. Billy Joel, whom I can't stand, trashed the Grateful Dead once in an interview. Why go there? Billy Joel doesn't have to like them at all. In fact, I think it would be weird if he did. Why go there?
@dean0211 I agree, now I know what a jerk I look like when Im putting down someone elses music, lol. Thanks to Pat for putting it out there! I've always said Kenny G sucks but putting down his musical ability would be ignorant. Kenny G obviously knows what he's doing and he's making tons of money doing it so I can't be playah hatin!
Pat Metheny made an ass of himself with this interview. His work over the past few years is some of the worst music he's ever written. He's gone as far as recreating music which to me is simply the inability to come up with creative material. Making a point by attacking another artist is childish and completely insensitive. I used to be a huge Metheny fan in the late 70s with the Lyle Mays collaborations but his music of late is horrid. Get over yourself Metheny.
@isthereaname2use check your musicality...as if you are a good composer when you speak the way did here, it is really just a reality check on the Jazz music scene...Kenny G is the worst copycat anyway, of the most beautiful songs. his playing style is over ripened. QUITE SOUR at that
@butchchase ..Ok Butch. I'll check as soon as I'm finished listening to Miles Davis and Coleman Hawkins. By the way, if you want to listen to creative music works that have already been done, try Stanley Jordan. He makes Metheny look silly. Well...sillier than he already made himself look. Have a nice day.
@isthereaname2use but thing is...just because you know of the names of the Jazz greats doesn't necessarily mean that individual tastes are also of the same weight. On the guitars, there is Joe Pass, Al di Meola and a new cat Federico Procopio, to name a few here. Stanley Jordan, as my 13 year old son says have a few tunes that are worth listening too. Most feel too cool even for a Siberian puppy!
@butchchase *sigh* some people will just never understand.. They'll never know what truly great music is. There's no use trying to drill it into they're thick skulls.
i'm not so sure that is really pat criticizing kenny g. even though kenny's music is some of the dumbest there is. i guess pat certainly has no fear of publicily shaming a fellow musician something rare in today's politicly correct world. more power to pat
I'm sure he realizes that a lot of people enjoy listening to Kenny G, and that's probably fine with him. Why would he be "haunted" by it? That's stupid. His point is that it takes more effort to find the great jazz that's out there, because only like 10% of it is really great. And that other stuff that sucks and gets mislabeled as jazz, like Kenny G, is out there, and a lot of people only heard that. It just means they're ignorant about jazz.
Kenny G played serious fusion on Jeff Lorber's album Wizard Island, which also has a good Chick Corea appearance on it. After working with Lorber he moved on from fusion. But he achieved his goal, make lowest common denominator music and make millions.Kenny G does not have a music degree, his college degree is in accounting or finance, LOL.
Of course you still don't have to agree with someone who responds to this with hate. But I suppose Pat didnt say these things with bad intent, I dont think it came to his mind he might hurt people who like Kenny G's music, while surely not helping them discover what he thinks of as "good" music
I think when you deeply love music, this feeling can be like a religious persons love to his religion and its symbolism. And just like some deeply religious people choose to rant about things not fitting their world, someone who is in love with music might be offended by a lot of music that is on the air today. Also because the affection to "bad" popular music might dampen one's sense for beautiful, poetic music and take away listeners from those who produce it.
@estinky That's why I find it sympathic, its not necessarily smart to talk like that in an interview, but it's only human to say something sucks from time to time. He's statement expresses that he's not a poker face-politician and that's kinda great I think (without reffering to the opinions he expresses)
You can't hate on Kenny G man. Dude is an exceptionally talented player/. Frankly when I hear Metheny. I don't necessarily think "jazz." I hear folk. country, rock, blues etc. Much the same, when I hear Kenny G, I don't think he's playing "Jazz." I hear pop songs, smooth music. Record label that signed him placed him the Jazz Category. He never pimped himself as a "Jazz" musician. Any sax player will tell you, Kenny G has chops and talent. Metheny's hating....in an excentric way
Thank God he had the guts to say this. Kenny G is like Diet Soda. Not a beverage, not good for you at all, but people guzzle it down because they just...do.
Pat can be VERY direct if you catch him at an opportune moment. I've interviewed him twice, both after great sets. If ever you do get the chance to speak with him - KNOW your shit. Pat can play with the giants - and does. And has earned massive props. Kenny G sells millions of CD - to fat cluess women in jogging suits or vapid secretaries who say things like, "Most jazz sounds like old men tuning.."
Pat is right - Friends Don't Let Freinds Listen to Kenny G.
hes just saying kenny g doesnt play real staright ahead jazz , he plays smooth or elevator music , i ll still give him props for getting paid ,. damn , he even did a set with barry white as a teen .but he wouldnt hold a candle to trane on soprano.
i just watched a video of kenny G jammin with stevie Wonder,, he seems like a nice person, very unkind of pat methenys rude remarks,, its not really jazz anymore any
It's about exposure. Opera is a good example. People say they don't like opera, but loved the short excerpt from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro in the movie The Shawshank Redemption. Once you've listened to certain types of music, and your ear becomes "trained" it becomes difficult to tolerate some types of "music". Pat is a bit blunt here but accurate. While Kenny G laughs his way to the bank Metheny racks up the Grammys! Like Mozart, it's Metheny who has the staying power.
I did not know that Pat Metheny was such a jerk about other people's music. Maybe that is why he has METH in his name. He told Bryan Gumbel that he liked all kinds of music. He is such a lier. He has said bad things about other bands too like Tom Petty. I used to like Pat's music but now I think his music is the worst music in the history of music. JERK.

it is obvious that pat is jealous of kennys success, as rodney king said, can't we all just get along,,, i do not like kenny g, but i respect his fans, pat may not realize it, but he is calling kennys fans, dumb, and stupid, i almost get sick listening to rap at strip joints, lol, but i would not call rap fans stupid, but i also do not appreciate shakespear,,there are scores of styles of jazz, kenny must cry all the way to the bank, ps DEVINE Pat's, synth guitar pitch gives my ears feedback
So what if a player wants to feed his family....Some of Wes Montgomery's releases were blatantly pop crap.....Pat comes off a little pompous here...and oh yeah we are tired of the electronics you and Al Di Meola try to push through your amps on top of pure acoustic sounds....kind of jazz equivalent of bubble gum if you ask me. All kinds of tastes/different strokes....just don't be pompous.
@mammers11 Yeah. salieri actually had ideas. He was just more of a conservatist of his time as opposed to mozart pushing the physical capability of what the culture at the time would even accept as music
@juanbarros88 he's saying 95% of music sucks, which I tend to think is a bit charitable. How many CDs have you seen that only have 1 good song, answer: most of them. then there are the few artists that can fill out an album with great tracks: rare.
@rillloudmother i agree with everything you said, but you should keep that opinion to yourself, even if it's a fact. at least don't say it publicly like pat did. it's not a crime but it's sort of not right. at the time, he did care about ethics, he was annoyed and angry.
@juanbarros88 And I think you should keep your opinion about my opinion to yourself. especially if you agree with it. Telling people what they can and cannot say is a pretty big insult where I'm from.
@rillloud I'm not telling people what to say or not, ppl can say what they want and give opinions about anything in whatever manner they desire. if he has the right to give such harsh opinions, i also have the right to post a light one, but according to my values and sense of ethics it is better to avoid harsh and give kind opinions specially in public, but you have that anger in your heart well you are in the right to let it out, and that's my opinion which i can give.
@rillloudmother and i wasn't talking about you keeping your opinion to yourself, i was talking about pat and his harsh opinion. in my opinion ppl should avoid that sort of comments, but ppl don't have to do what I say. i said should not must and i'm not giving orders or anything of that sort, and if something is wrong according to me that's my 'problem'. this is wrong according to a lot of ppl and just fine according to many others, ethics are subjective just like music.

95% of so-called rock music does entirely suck, primarilly because the musicians sell out for money, rather than doing it out of pure passion, as you said.
@mussman717word I disagree. IMO, 95% suck b/c all they have is passion, or simply a desire to be rock stars, but don't take the time to learn their craft. Not to be trite, but the Beatles are perfect example. They learned other people's music, the craft of songwriting & played tons of gigs to become a really good band. Also, they made songs & records that were good entertainment, not self-indulgent drivel. The Stones & Zep schooled themselves on American blues. They also put in the time.
You're right, they don't know any better. And that's the problem. When you think of "Rock" music, do you think of Nickelback or Jimi Hendrix? Unfortunately, there are more Nickelbacks in this world. Also, I want to clarify that some of the greatest music recorded consist of very simple chord progressions. Bob Dylan's stuff comes to mind. Easy songs to play, but he feels them. My point is this: If you're going around calling yourself a musician, you better damn well be one.
I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS, PAT METHENY INSULTING SOMEONE'S MUSIC PUBLICLY, THAT'S JUST WRONG. I DON'T EVEN KNOW A KENNY G SONG, BUT THIS IS JUST TOO MUCH. SOMEONE MUSICALLY MATURE BEING IMMATURE, I GUESS HE'S ONLY MUSICALLY MATURE. YOU CAN HATE SOMEONE'S MUSIC BUT DONT SAY IT IN PUBLIC AT LEAST NOT IN THAT EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE WAY. NOW I DON'T LIKE PAT AS A PERSON. IT LOOKS BETTER WHEN YOU SAY WHAT YOU THINK WITHOUT INSULTING OR POINTING FINGERS, NAMING NAMES.
@juanbarros88 This was a long time ago, so maybe today he wouldn't be so frank. But you should know that Pat was quiet about KG until he did It's A Wonderful World w/the recording of Louis Armstrong, which Pat considered arrogant & blasphemous. Pat was ok w/Kenny & even w/calling his music jazz until he stepped way out of his place & had the nerve to put himself alongside Louis. This was too much for Pat & pushed him over the edge. Also, you shouldn't use all caps; people consider it SHOUTING.

many jazz musicians trash pat because he's "fusion" .... ..the call pat "not true jazz" ...pat is being a ass and...basically ..pat gets trashed by the "purists"....pats basically sharks feeding on each other...:dumb pat
No jazz musician becomes upset just because another one becomes very famous.. if anything this would make one happy! This rant is because what kenny G plays isn't jazz and yet people call it "jazz". Now THAT is irritating for a jazz musician!! (Also, his music is sterile and contains no interesting chord changes)
Wow, shockingly ungracious. I always thought depth of musical talent equated to depth of character. C'mon Pat, you could have made your point without naming names. However, such a gaffe is pardonable given that all of your energies may well have gone to making you the consummate musician that you are rather than a p.r. expert...
he said Kenny gs music is stupid but hes one of the richest saxophonist in the world, i do agree that most of his songs are not jazz but if ur looking for real jazz artist look for charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, sonny Rollins, and john Coltrane, but is ridiculous for Pat Metheny to say that, when u learn in jazz to accept all forms and style of jazz
@black0lightning Yes, that's true--- i'm not a Kenny G fan myself, he's pretty boring, but i have to add, Pat Metheny ALSO has done some truly ridiculous CD's that pass for "music". (e.g. "Song X"- Zero Tolerance For Silence")
'Zero Tolerance' was just a venture into self indulgent noise. Ironically Jan Garbarek sounds remarkably like Kenny G on his "Invisible World" but i think Pat has missed this point.
@ca4Gochops I am sorry but Pat makes even more money (out of music) than G does. G has a lot of money because of Starbucks (not that he didnt get something out of music).
@innerdeth Kenny G has sold more albums than any other instrumentalist of our time. over 70 MILLION.......................seventy milllliiiooonn. although Pat M is a heavy weight among jazz heads, to say he makes more money from music than Pat m is a nonsensical argument.
@innerdeth if each record was an average of $13 (which they were def. more). $13x 70 million = $910,000,000. that is almost a billion. there is absolutely no way in hell Pat M ever made that from ANY of his music, i promise.
I'd say that the people who say they don't understand jazz actually DO like Kenny G! KG is easily understandable. It's just mellow music. In fact, I wouldn't call it "jazz," but "easy listening." Jazz can be very discordant, and sometimes has no discernible tune or melody.THAT is most likely what the people who don't understand jazz are talking about. This guy's comments are very adolescent. Calling music "stupid" and saying the "good stuff is really great" explains nothing and insults many.

Though not my personal favorite, Pat is a very fine player. He's also an original; and that, folks, does not grow on trees.
That said, if I did not already love Jazz music, this would reinforce all my negative, ill-informed impressions about how cold and self-absorbed it all is.
Having listened to Jazz almost my entire life I agree that the popified jazz is crap. It's easy to listen to and would work as Musak. It is not however Jazz in the sense of taking risks and pushing the listeners boundaries of music. Jazz is art. Pop is by definition designed to be liked by the masses. Kenny G appeals to that audience. He is not pushing any boundaries with his listeners. Kenny G's music is essentially unchanged since he came on the scene.
What you people dissing Pat Metheny here DO NOT get is the fact that he speaks about the MUSIC that Kenny G makes, not Kenny G as an artist. He expresses disdain about Kenny G's music, how dumb it is and its negative affect on jazz and music as a whole, he doesn't say a word about Kenny G as a person. And he says what many of us are thinking anyway, so what's your problem ?
@abehammy I stand corrected there is good hiphop! I love the Roots, Eric B etc........ Basically Michael Brecker is the best to ever play the sax R.I.P. Also Adam Rogers has taken jazz guitar up 1000 notches. Pat shouldve kept his mouth shut!!!! Ive been there though where I open my mouth and then go back later and cringe at what I said.
if you stick a mic in front of anyone enough times, they will eventually say something foolish. i am not a fan of kg. but, damn, the guy's making a living & somebody must be enjoying his music or else he'd have a lot less cd & concert sales. unfortunately, pm sounds like my parents when they'd put down rock 'n roll as being stupid. well, most of what the masses like is not very sophisticated. listening to jazz & classical music takes a bit of active participation. kg can be an opening to jazz.
Kenny G can actually play really well, it's just that he gets paid millions to make his instrument "sexy" and "romantic" that's why it's so unbearable to most ears because he's getting paid millions to play boring. that's business haha. unfortunately ALL jazz these days are being associated with his sound
Of course, Kenny G doesn't play Jazz, but once you say that someone is the worst, you basically said that you're better than them. Metheny is a huge influence, and a great player, but there is NO bad music. There is music you don't like, and that's the end of it. It's not a competition to see who plays the "best" of more legitimate music.
Why are you all hatin on pat right now? If you seriously think kenny g is a talented and creative musician then you need to come to terms with the fact that you dont know what good music is and shut up about it. And for all of you who are judging pat for bashing another musician: Smooth Jazz is an incorrect title, its ruining the worldwide concept of jazz. Its musicians like kenny g and mindi abair who shit on jazz by calling themselves jazz musicians.
Ok Im gonna stop talking crap and be real for once! Kenny G's music made him millions and you know what.....millions of Americans liked it. There is worse music then Kenny G btw! Ever heard of hip hop?!?!?! Michael Brecker was and is the best saxophonist to ever play the instrument. Pat Metheny really needs to watch what he says because the album "We live here" was total smooth jazz!!!!! I love Pat but this was a FAIL!!!!
I'm not trying to contradict you since I don't know much about jazz, but when my teachers want me to learn to improv better, they tell me to listen to John Coltrane. Boots Randolph is another jazz saxophonist that my teacher admires. That's just jazz music, but since the saxophone was made as a classical instrument, I'd say that some of the best saxophonists are; for the traditional school of playing, Eugene Rousseau, Marcel Mule, Kenneth Tse. Allard school, Joe Allard, Harvey Pittel.
Metheny is a hyprocrite because he's made a career out of playing "smooth jazz" as we know it today, just like Kenny G has. One who lives in a glass house should not throw stones. Kenny G is a brilliant saxophonist, and could play on the same stage as Metheny any day of the week.
If this is, in fact, not fake, then Metheny is really making himself look bad here. He is a respected, world class musician, and here he is acting like a 14-year-old who just "discovered" jazz. He has no character at all. When you are in an echelon like him, you don't slam the work of others just because you don't happen to like it. My opinion of him as a person just dropped 50 points.
Kenny g isn't jazz. That's the point.

Pat Metheny made an ass of himself with this interview. His work over the past few years is some of the worst music he's ever written. He's gone as far as recreating music which to me is simply the inability to come up with creative material. Making a point by attacking another artist is childish and completely insensitive. I used to be a huge Metheny fan in the late 70s with the Lyle Mays collaborations but his music of late is horrid. Get over yourself Metheny.
isthereaname2use 2 months ago
@isthereaname2use check your musicality...as if you are a good composer when you speak the way did here, it is really just a reality check on the Jazz music scene...Kenny G is the worst copycat anyway, of the most beautiful songs. his playing style is over ripened. QUITE SOUR at that
butchchase 2 months ago
@butchchase ..Ok Butch. I'll check as soon as I'm finished listening to Miles Davis and Coleman Hawkins. By the way, if you want to listen to creative music works that have already been done, try Stanley Jordan. He makes Metheny look silly. Well...sillier than he already made himself look. Have a nice day.
isthereaname2use 2 months ago
@isthereaname2use that's very refreshing...you have a nice day as well.
butchchase 2 months ago
@isthereaname2use but thing is...just because you know of the names of the Jazz greats doesn't necessarily mean that individual tastes are also of the same weight. On the guitars, there is Joe Pass, Al di Meola and a new cat Federico Procopio, to name a few here. Stanley Jordan, as my 13 year old son says have a few tunes that are worth listening too. Most feel too cool even for a Siberian puppy!

But I suppose Pat didnt say these things with bad intent, I dont think it came to his mind he might hurt people who like Kenny G's music, while surely not helping them discover what he thinks of as "good" music
vogelisthalaw 3 months ago
I think when you deeply love music, this feeling can be like a religious persons love to his religion and its symbolism. And just like some deeply religious people choose to rant about things not fitting their world, someone who is in love with music might be offended by a lot of music that is on the air today. Also because the affection to "bad" popular music might dampen one's sense for beautiful, poetic music and take away listeners from those who produce it.

@rillloud I'm not telling people what to say or not, ppl can say what they want and give opinions about anything in whatever manner they desire. if he has the right to give such harsh opinions, i also have the right to post a light one, but according to my values and sense of ethics it is better to avoid harsh and give kind opinions specially in public, but you have that anger in your heart well you are in the right to let it out, and that's my opinion which i can give.
juanbarros88 4 months ago
@rillloudmother and i wasn't talking about you keeping your opinion to yourself, i was talking about pat and his harsh opinion. in my opinion ppl should avoid that sort of comments, but ppl don't have to do what I say. i said should not must and i'm not giving orders or anything of that sort, and if something is wrong according to me that's my 'problem'. this is wrong according to a lot of ppl and just fine according to many others, ethics are subjective just like music.

95% of so-called rock music does entirely suck, primarilly because the musicians sell out for money, rather than doing it out of pure passion, as you said.
mussman717word 4 months ago

@123abrik There's good and bad hip-hop too. I personally love The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest.

This video is like 10 years old. I'm sure Pat isn't so pissy about it now.

@benvye Incorporating a points system into your opinion of people... talk about acting like a 14 year-old.
