I pay 70.00 dues (8.40 of which are voluntary) as a union member and I'm glad I do. My union has protected my pension, my pay, my benefits, and my job.

But according to Bureau of Labor Statistics people in unions make more money.Where is the flock of people wanting to make more money? Our union were I work does nothing for us $35 a month in fees and our department makes the same gets the same benifits as everyone else at our company. Also ourt department can be done by a private contractor. The union cant stop them from firering all of us and getting a contractor for our Dept. When you work a unionized job, you usually make more money, have insurance (that you dont have to pay for), and in some cases retirement and collage programs. the money you make is enough to cover the petty union dues and still bring home more then you would working non union most if the time.

Most companies offer insurance that you usually have to share the costs, even in unionized companies. Most large companies offer multiple retirement options and COLLEGE tuition reimbursment. They also offer paid sick time and vacation. Your thoughts on pay does not hold economic weight. People will flock to more money. All people would join unions in that case.
If I have a legitimate complaint and need to contact the Department of Labor or OSHA or even a Workman Comp claim , I don’t want to be forced out of my job by management making my life as hard as possible until I quit, with no one to help me. Not only that I think for my self and make my own decisions and have a voice without being in fear of my job with a good union.
There is nothing about individual rights that offends me, it is a people that have incredible rights and is totally ignorant to them. Many companies prosper on the fact that their workers don't know their rights as a worker, and want to keep it that way.
Its not about paying some one else to think for you. Not one person in history has been able to change things in society by them selves without a group of people backing them. Meaning that corporations treat workers like commodities, work them hard and pay as little as possible. If its not fast enough then they find some one that will cheaper. Also its not that there unskilled commodities, its that they are workers and need to have their workers rights protected, that’s what the union is for.
Another thought is that the United States is a UNION and you pay your dues when you have a job (taxes) to be a member in good standing, and if you don’t, it is nearly impossible to get a lawful job at any lawful private place of business in this country. Not including the prosecution through the legal system. How is that for forcing a union?

Oh I don't know, allowed under achieving teachers to stay in their job, created a massive bureaucracy that inhibits quality education in exchange for over paid administrators. But at least the teachers union did create a need for quality education that is being filled by charter schools and more home-schooled children who test out way above public educated children on average.
@swstryker Instead of blaming the teachers, you could blame the system set in place by our elected officials. Schools who do poorly on state testing recieve less funding, and in turn cannot afford quality teachers. Which compounds itself further the next year with lower scores and less funding.

Medical and dental benefits were availible, but you had to go to their union supported doctor and dentist...15-20 miles away in another town. I wasn't going to give up my family doctor. When I started, I was told I already owed $40 in dues, and they were still taking out $4.25 a week in dues. I hated it and the job. How could I support an organization that doesn't support me? If the union works for you, great. It didn't work for me. And I am glad they closed the store where I worked.
I was part of a UFCW union when I was younger and on the whole, they didn't do shit for me. It was controlled by one family, and still is. When the president retired, his son took over.
This is what I went through with my union...They did not promote from within, instead, you had to bid hours for promotions (ex. I bid 20 hours, and you bid 25 hours, you get the promotion). Tuition reinbursement was availible, but only if you were a checker or above.

Oh and I work 4 days a week not 5 so I get 3 days off. Plus I get plenty of vacation time, company spends thousands of dollars for many events and monthly catered lunches we do and much more. Our union were I work does nothing for us $35 a month in fees and our department makes the same gets the same benifits as everyone else at our company. Also ourt department can be done by a private contractor. The union cant stop them from firering all of us and getting a contractor for our Dept. When you work a unionized job, you usually make more money, have insurance (that you dont have to pay for), and in some cases retirement and collage programs. the money you make is enough to cover the petty union dues and still bring home more then you would working non union most if the time.

Most companies offer insurance that you usually have to share the costs, even in unionized companies. Most large companies offer multiple retirement options and COLLEGE tuition reimbursment. They also offer paid sick time and vacation. Your thoughts on pay does not hold economic weight. People will flock to more money. All people would join unions in that case.

Its not about paying some one else to think for you. Not one person in history has been able to change things in society by them selves without a group of people backing them. Meaning that corporations treat workers like commodities, work them hard and pay as little as possible. If its not fast enough then they find some one that will cheaper. Also its not that there unskilled commodities, its that they are workers and need to have their workers rights protected, that’s what the union is for.

Another thought is that the United States is a UNION and you pay your dues when you have a job (taxes) to be a member in good standing, and if you don’t, it is nearly impossible to get a lawful job at any lawful private place of business in this country. Not including the prosecution through the legal system. How is that for forcing a union?

I understand not wanting to do things to uphold a job, like paying for uniforms or drug tests, or not getting payed for all time worked, or being financially responsible for company goods that come up missing. The fact of the matter is, when she got the job in the first place she was or should have been informed by the company that she was applying for work for a unionized company, if she or her father don’t want to be union then she can seek work at a nonunion work place.

Grocery workers union? Anyone with an 8th grade education can be taught to do any non-management job in a grocery store in less than a week! Oh I don't know, allowed under achieving teachers to stay in their job, created a massive bureaucracy that inhibits quality education in exchange for over paid administrators. But at least the teachers union did create a need for quality education that is being filled by charter schools and more home-schooled children who test out way above public educated children on average.

@swstryker Instead of blaming the teachers, you could blame the system set in place by our elected officials. Schools who do poorly on state testing recieve less funding, and in turn cannot afford quality teachers. Which compounds itself further the next year with lower scores and less funding.

@Biggsecksey177 Police unions. I personally know several law enforcement officials who have told me repeatedly that they do NOT want to be part of the union, but they are FORCED to. I value and respect law enforcement personnel, but I also know they could run the bloated, top heavy administrations of law enforcement much more cost effective and still pay the actual officers on the street a much higher wage if it was run as a free enterprise instead of a money wasting government bureaucracy.

A democracy does not have to threaten or intimidate non-members to become members. Those are practices of a dictatorship regime, not a democracy. Union leaders are not "voted" in or out. Medical and dental benefits were availible, but you had to go to their union supported doctor and dentist...15-20 miles away in another town. I wasn't going to give up my family doctor. When I started, I was told I already owed $40 in dues, and they were still taking out $4.25 a week in dues. I hated it and the job. How could I support an organization that doesn't support me? If the union works for you, great. It didn't work for me. And I am glad they closed the store where I worked.

I was part of a UFCW union when I was younger and on the whole, they didn't do shit for me. It was controlled by one family, and still is. When the president retired, his son took over.
This is what I went through with my union...They did not promote from within, instead, you had to bid hours for promotions (ex. I bid 20 hours, and you bid 25 hours, you get the promotion). Tuition reinbursement was availible, but only if you were a checker or above.

LOL, my company who is NON union, guarantees every associate 40 hours, weekends off and overtime when needed and its all at no monthly fees out of our paychecks. Oh and I work 4 days a week not 5 so I get 3 days off. Plus I get plenty of vacation time, company spends thousands of dollars for many events and monthly catered lunches we do and much more. I can thank a company like mine that's non union. lol

When I joined my union I.A.M. they said were here to prevent the loss of your job and to stand behind you. What a fcking joke, there was no brotherhood in my union. My shop steward was a real asshole & union rwp too. You don't take 4 working days to decide a employee's job of 7 years and pride is not worth saving! After paying $3,200.00 in dues and having my I.A.M. Union Lodge 60 Romulus MI not fight to keep my job! This Union and members proved to me & many other people that unions Suck!

When I lost my job of 7 years and was to meet with the company & union member. My shop steward did not stick around because he was not being paid overtime to be there for me! The union is there to save your job they tell you! What a joke!!! If I sound pissed, its because I had the best job ever a long with all good co-workers. Most people have agreed with me that my I.A.M. union and its members in romulus mich are assholes. At least your story made the news, mine got swept under the rug!!!!!!!!
