My grandfather went to one of those "schools" when he was 12. He and his 5 brothers were tricked into going-their parents I mean... Any way, I am proud of my Karuk/Shasta heritage. I am trying to learn the Karuk language, I find it a difficult, but beautiful language. I love the regalia too. I find that the more I learn about the culture the more I love it. My father grew up with it, in it... This is a wonderful thing this video. Yootva.
The problem is they don't teach what happened to the CA Indians in schools. We had Indian massacre's here to . I find native Americans grinding stones sometimes and always wondered what happened to them tell I googled it.
I used to go camping with charlie thom when I was younger, up in the marble mountains. we would ride in on my grandmothers horses and do sweat lodges and sing and dance up in the wilderness. It was very nice to hear him speak in this video, thanks for the memories.
people believes indians came from asia same familia of the turkish .. ! ?? that is true .. with bones genetics and types showed turkish and us indians are relatives !?
I'm glad that Malcom addressed the ideal of California Indian extinction with a tongue in cheek sense of humor. You can't help but laugh when someone says that a person's tribe is extinct when you're standing right next to them. Thank you, Malcom. ~Rosalie McCracken (Ohlone Rumsen, Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe)
This was fabulous. All of the participants were so remarkable. I especially enjoyed Charley Thom and wondered if he is related to the Thom family mentioned in 'In the Land Of The Grasshopper Song," written back in the early 1900s. There were Thoms in that book from Karuk country.
its not indian, its native american! Indians are people from India. Society should learn to adapt to calling "American Indians" Native americans, not indians from America!!
@scarierthantheIRS My Native Studies professors prefers "American Indian," but i prefer "Indigenous." We are both Native people, we can label ourselves how we like.
@scarierthantheIRS White people always tell us we need to be called Native Americans. My family and most other indigenous families have always referred to themselves as Indians and the recent political correctness of todays change society certainly won't change that.
@scarierthantheIRS actually the word indian is generic for the word Indigenous. East Indians are a collection of what were several independent Hindu states, that an english company decided to take control of, and make them slaves to grow tea for them. Indian = Slave again the word amarica comes from the spanish meaning new world. i dont know what a native new world is but i know what Anishinaabe is, i konw what Yurok or Haudenosaunee. Native Pride yes Native american not. simply Anishinaabe
does anyone know how I can see or hear the ohlone performance by Linda? it is not part of this video. Is it because certain Indians do not like to be photographed?
What happened to the Hostler section from Hoopa? It skipped that entire section at about 79minutes and jumped to the Karuk man. what the heck, I really wanted to see that portion.
Thank you, it is good to know that there are people working to recapture and sustain the history of our indigenous people. I have traveled through Cahuilla lands, the Anza and Thermal areas - so rich, thank you.
Please post more events from the Anthro Department! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and only wish I could have been there in person, to see the whole evening's presentation. I plan to show segments of this to my classes...

America is the name of a dead white guy; India the name of a river in South Asia. If it was me, I'd go for the river.

Though come to think of it, America is named after Amerigo Vespucci who was an Italian guy. Is that any better?
