lol.. "you did your homework, congratulations" am I the only one who got the major undertone of "you don't do that very often..."
But Yay for trains, I will say the ones where I live never runs on time, and is often replaced by busses.. but what can I expect from old tracks that go over mountains that is covered in high snow instead of under/around (wich ain't really an option). still need them though
@Tanjaaraus Strange, as soon as I heard that on the vid I scrolled down to the comments to see if anyone else thought the same thing and low and behold lol.
I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but modern high speed rail started in 1964, with the 0 Series Shinkansen in Japan...I know Langlois said since 1981, but that's since 1981. It just sounded like the reporter was mislead at 3:42.
Either way, I think it's a shame that we have to rely on other countries to do this...that's why I'm studying civil engineering, so that we can start our own high speed rail network...admit it, we're slacking...
Trains in the USA are a joke compared to europe and we need hsr in the USA it will bring higher demand a high density and the ecomomy can get better and the higher the demand the lower the prices will be for hsr tickets and if the USA does get hsr then it can create a balance of transportation in the world and even if it's rlly expensive to build and repair it must be done fixing bridges and railzs cost alot but safety should always come first and to those taxes payers make a bill to congress t
As far as the person in Texas and Idaho he mentioned that said "why should my taxes be used"... well they should think about how the economies that would benefit pay in their share of federal taxes that THEY benefit from. People are too selfish and don't see the bigger picture. It's like how they blame Wall Street for everything not realize Wall Street helped raise their own standard of living wherever they are.
As long as money is spend to do anything to maintain oil consume high for the cars and to fight for getting this oil with weapons then everything is OK it doesn't matter the costs.. but thinking of a future with much less oil at higher cost is still not on the agenda of this (stupid) woman. USA has to spend NOW in better not oil depending transport modes... in a few years it will be too late.. and even more expensive.
- In Europe the ticket price of any train is absurdly expensive
- High speed trains are more expensive than flying
Trains are lovely. But except for freight intermodal services, Passenger trains are a business failure and they still present themselves as a succes .
By the way, Europe is in red debt and still borrowing money, they havent grown for years, they have an overvalued currency and they dont create jobs. Europe is not a great example.
@jjbarbados HSL expensive tickets? For example I travel a lot between Amsterdam to Paris in 3 hours. A single ticket cost €35. For me its quicker and cheaper.
- Advantage is no check-in at the railwaystations (you don't need to be there on hour in advance like in airports)
- Don't matter how heavy your luggage is
- Travel from citycenter to citycenter (you don't to travel from airports to citycenters)
- Thalys: A'dam, Schiphol, R'dam, A'werp, Brus and Paris ( not every city has an airport)
@jjbarbados High speed train tickets expensive? Do you even know what you're on about? On most corridors, a airplane ticket often times costs more than 4 times a rail ticket. That is probably the reason why Europe's high speed rail network is flourishing.
@jjbarbados Actually, you're incorrect. Commuter services are subsidized, but true high speed rail is not. Eurostar just privatized and Ferrari is entering the market with NTV in September. I could travel from London to Paris on Eurostar for 68 pounds, much less than a plane ticket.
@megatwingo It was rather to underline the fact that Germany, in its position as economic powerhouse of Europe, needs an economically strong ally, and so, the comment which I posted. Simple, eh? How could I question your reply? I just wanted to underline a geopolitical logic on the long term...
@jjbarbados The Eurostar was financed through entirely private funds and shares (thank you, Maggie). High-Speed trains are maybe more expensive than planes, but they take you to central city stations, unlike edge-of-cities airports. Passenger trains are profitable when there is high demand and high density, like in Europe. European countries have, on average, less deficits than the US, and some EVEN have surpluses (Germany). Also, debt, on average, has not exploded like in the US.
@jjbarbados - the airline industry is subsidised. There is a reason that all these airlines have gone bankrupt since the 80's. Airline travel is kept artificially low!! That's the dirty secret.
Her objection are silly. There's not enough density in America....so? There's not enough density in some parts of Europe, Asia, the Middle East or Africa; nobody's proposing to build in nowheresville, but to build HSR in places with populations to support them, like California. $50 billion to rebuild the nation's existing railways? Big whoop, $25 billion was tossed at a single ship, $50 billion for the entire nation is a bargin in comparison. Finally I love my BMW, doesn't mean I'm stuck in it.
The female pundit has no business on TV. "Americans like their cars." Yeah, I love my car. Wouldn't give it up if I had to. But what CHOICE do we have with gasoline at four, five and even ten dollars a gallon, which is mathematically inevitable? I'd still love my car. Doesn't mean I can afford to drive it.
One thing important to...It's for your énergie politic...each new USA président says:"We must be less dépendent from middle east oil"....So,what are you waiting for?For électricity you burn pétrol or coal:( .Don't you know how to build nuke reactor?High speed trains work with électricity...Know what I mean? You can create a super project :nuke reactors+high speed rails+high speed trains=more power in économie...and maybe new cities. This is what we have done here.......
Think about Américans....Build hsr will boost your économie...Bring invests...You will connect cities to cities,we call that "gravité économique"...You can work in train, eat, sleep, read papers,do what you want....Not in your car....Yes,you can work in train...For a country who loves make money,it's surpising that USA don't have them...
Alright man thanks for the information. Hey do you happen to know how much more do you have to pay to sleep on a night train? like the trains that have beds that you can sleep in, do you have to pay more even if you have the a Ticket? Also do you know if reservations for train seats around western Europe cost a lot even if you have an eurail global pass?
@sickbasterd123 In terms of Reservations, I can only speak for Germany, in which it costs 3,50 € for a single Traveller. The Fee is necessary, wether or not you have a Pass.Concerning the night Train, the price for a Bed-Cabin differs, depending on the Route, Class and Number of Passengers.I suggest to take a look at the official Page of the "Bahn", for more Information.
You may as well wish to ask your local travelling Office, since they may be able to provide a Infos about the rest of Europe.
the reason that US rail sucks is because jerks like you vote for politicians who constantly cut rail budgets because they are seen as "inefficient." What you seem to overlook is that we spend billions subsidizing airports and highways.
PS I'm also from TEXAS and would regularly use HSR if we had it. Sadly, Southwest Airlines was in cahoots with the government and silently killed off the plans we had in the 90s to build a cross-state network

Hhhmm there is soo many people in this country that needs to be educated before we try to explain to them the importance of HSR. I've heard phrases such as " The US is not Europe" my God can we be more retarded?
@Zicologo - they are right... and western Europe (including the Nordic countries) actually has a higher standard of living than the United States...but they don't know that either.
Before the high speed in France, no one used the trains but now almost everyone uses them so the argument that americans dont wanna use them is just bullcrap. It's all a matter of availability. Plus, extra capacity is needed in the US. In Europe u got a high use of bicycles, trams, busses, trains, cars, planes, just everything and because there are several ways to go to your destination makes sure there is less pressure on 1 of those.
When the Soviets scared the cr$p out of the American with Sputnik, I wonder those who say "I don't care" in USA will just roll over, play dead and admit defeat to the communists. "I don't want to pay tax because I do not get the benefit" argument is BS. I don't live in California, but when I travel there, I expect to use the road, libraries for free even though I don't pay California property tax.

Germany is in Europe. Germany isn´t in red numbers.
Our economy is growing stronger than the one of the USA and have our finances by far better in check than the USA.
Our growth is that strong, that we just bought the New York Stock Exchange.
To ride a train in Germany or any other country in Europe is much cheaper than to fly with an aircraft.
How long must one have listened to FOX news (with moderators like this drunk woman in this clip here) to make such absolutely wrong claims?
