  • woooow that was a slow ass printer lol

  • 9183 : wow cool 2012: ROFL we have ipads dude!

  • Ipad 0.1

  • I wish I could go back in time and give these guys an ipad (or something similar)

  • 4:39 Did he say tablets?

  • @DP675 Sí, el dijo tablets (Yes, he say tablets) O.O

  • @gabymatgir Did he mean tablet as in something similar to the ipad?

  • Wow ... the birth of the late 80s computer standard, pretty much. Or at least, the small box and the small disc :-)

Weird how the parts which are touched on the least in this - 3.5" discs and WANs - were the ideas which took off most quickly and popularly, and the others took decades to reach fruition (touch screen, voice commands) if at all (printer-in-monitor, auto dialing phone from the PC addressbook...)

  • Which year is it (I mean in the show)?

  • Seeing him handling a "modern" floppy back in 1983 is so weird... I was using those until what, 5 years ago?

  • @ricarleite Well, it was a prototype really, though Sony had them from '82. They were probably only holding 180~360k at that point, compared to the 720~800 of the 68000 machines and 1440 of the PC.

These standards stick around though. Think of the CD - introduced in 1981 but you can still buy new releases on the format today. CDROM came along only a couple years after the 3.5" floppy... but took a further 10 to usurp it as the primary data distribution medium - and 15 as a home user R/W format.

  • @ricarleite (just bearing in mind that the "regular" 720k floppies I grew up with on the Atari ST were always "DSDD" - double sided, vs the single-sided ones that the early STs used... and Double Density, suggesting that disks holding only half as much data per side also existed at some point... 5.25" disks still only held 180k each at this point, though)

  • 7:30, the foreshadowing of the internet.

  • That guy was very knowledgeable, pretty much must have had a peek into the future

  • listen at 4:35

    it's a reality today

  • why not sew apple

  • @kinmanyuen That would have them in "stitches", right? It is "sue" not "sew"...

  • beautiful piece of shit you got there.

  • And I'm watching this on my iPhone. A touchscreen device... :D

  • Just Beautifull =D

  • @XmyXshoesXplus

    No you stupid punk.

They'd look at your ipod and think "after 3 decades and this is all you can do still?"

Then they'd shoot you for being a brainless Apple zombie.

  • @Vebinz The person you replied to is an idiot, but you are an asshole.

  • @CerebralEntrophy

Well, we can't all be perfect like you.

You may now go back to correcting people's spelling mistakes.

  • touch screen on a text output.

  • 1983's iMac with DOS :))

  • i prefer my ipod touch 4g

  • Did it run Dos or its own proprietary operating system?

  • Touch controls + CRT screens is not fun... have you ever touched one while it was on?

  • @AMYuntold if the tube is properly grounded and shielded you cant feel anything. like touching glass.

  • WoW! Eso es un Boom!! es increible, esas tecnologias en esos años... ha evolucionado fantasticamente!

  • haha! thanks for sharing

  • I used one of those computers at work!!!! wow! the memories!

  • Someone needs to try and run Windows 8 on this thing.

  • OH my GOSH!!! "One day using our voice [to interact with the computer]".... This guy REALLY knew what he was talking about! (As I grab my TOUCH SCREEN iPhone 4S and use my VOICE to ask Siri a question!) If this HP guy is still alive today, I want to shake his hand!!

  • Damn, these guys realy knew what they were talking about. Almost seeing the future infact. They even metioned Personal Computer, Network Connection over Phone line. What am i doing now in 2011, exactly what they said.

  • @Neojhun I agree with what you are saying except Network Connections over Phone lines were land line dial up modems not the modern mobile phone networks we are accustomed to now.

  • Why is everyone hating on apple? Jeez who gives a shit if they weren't the first to use touch technology in the devices? They were the first company to create a full touch device that people actually wanted to use.

  • who this this was a surprise

  • NO MANCHES!!!!!! si en los 80s abia una computadora touch por que ahora todas no son touch!!!!! apuesto a que en un par de años ya no fabricaran telefonos conteclas

  • iPad is for faggot

  • Idiots laughing at these Computer Chronicles videos, when they ought to be IMPRESSED that everything they think is new and cutting edge and worth ridiculous amounts of money, we could ALREADY do decades ago. How fast people forget. Fools using multi-core machines to surf the Internet, something you could do on a 486.

  • i wouldn't mind one of these as a sculpture art work piece for the hallway... maybe leave it on for a dim glowing green light... =]

  • It's 2011 and HP still haven't realised that nobody actually wants a touch screen computer in a form other than a slate.

  • i love that green and black screen its such a good resolution haha :)

  • 1970s - digital camera

    1970s - touchsreen panels

    1982 - touchscreen tv

end of 1980s - flash memory

    1991 - Wi Fi

    1995 - dvd discs

Conclusion: Fuck marketing and lazy developers

  • @MrBratkenSolov just about all of our technology came from military innovations... and actually you're really close, touch-screen actually was developed in the mid-late 60's.

  • @MrBratkenSolov Don't think so, yes these tech existed but very infant stages. They were barely able to be used at the time. Consumer market would never like it as it would be to complicated to use. As a system developer, i may have finneshed building a new system. But almost the need equal amount time to refine, test and fullproof it so users won't kill it. Get It?

  • @MrBratkenSolov there was wifi back then??? fuck

  • @MrBratkenSolov 2010 Apple tries to patent touch screen technoligy.

  • @MrBratkenSolov you do better then? Also you forgot blu-rays and other stuff :p

  • @MrBratkenSolov DVD discs were released in the US in 1997.

  • @MrBratkenSolov wi fi was invented in the late fifties early sixties

  • "Not new technology" and 20 years later.... touch devices are sold as brand new technology... how gullible the consumer market is...

  • @andycidau89 Yep, and stick a picture of a piece of fruit on it an morons will queue up to spend hundreds on it.

  • @wesmatron That's because people are fucking stupid. *cough*Macfags*cough*

  • HP now is shit.

  • NICE BUT TODAYS CELL FHONE CAN OUT DO THIS WHOLE COMPUTER.

  • @pattenable

todays cellphones are duel core 1- 1.5 gigahertz that computer is a single core not even 12 mhz so yea no shit it will outdo that computer slappy

  • People don't believe me when I tell him a lot of the technology we have today have been around for decades, just with lacking horse power...

Hopefully, this videos will prove me right. :D

  • You know how freaking slow it is to point every single letter on the dam screen to write a document without using a keyboard?...Now...unless a virtual keyboard is on screen but it will be uncomfortable to be typing on the screen and not to mention loss of visibility. As long as we are humans and have hands with fingers...NOTHING will replace the physical keyboard.. The only thing that can top that is TELEPATHY of which I am soooo anxious for that to become reality.

  • so... its taken almost 30 years for touch to become mass market... WTF TOOK SO LONG?

  • This is why I hate when people say that Apple invented/own the touch screen, o anyone using a touch screen is copying apple, hahahah. This wasn't new technology in '83!

  • Amazing, it's like they all saw into a crystal ball. If only a time machine could have given them a shot of an Android phone.

  • this is kinda sad lmao

  • Although HP is now defunct it has certainly left a legacy of innovating the history of the PC.

  • hoy en dia vemos esas pc como simples juguetillos

  • Floppy, mass storage media :)

  • OMG they must have used 1 dedicated CPU per angle controlling that touch screen back then.

  • Comment removed

  • I understand that a wide variety of instrumentation could be used with the HP-150, including EKG.

  • wow, he can move it up and down on the WIIL :p

  • wow, he can move it up and down on the WIIL :p

God damn... this is boring watching him talking.. shut up, this isn't intresting at all, lol xD

  • i Rather Use a MOUSE..

  • Does the host have hair in a spray can hair? lol

  • HP and Compaq were the best computers before 2005 now are the best shit to waste your money

  • The iPad of '83 8D *not*

  • @MrPlayboy28 Hey idiot...its an HP which would make it a Zune....Get off off Job's dick hes dead your a necrophiliac apple fan boy.

  • @HartAHart it was a joke you pc fanboy. get a respect for life aswell

  • @HartAHart so was mine....and no.

  • meanwhile in 2011, it's only 99 bucks lol

  • Television's first live reveal of new floppy disk technology! insane!!

  • Cool

  • Em 1983 touch screen já não era nova tecnologia? oO

  • @danbaumann84 Pelos vistos xd

  • This video is not only interesting because it was the year I was born but to listen to these gentlemen discuss about "using phone lines" to interchange information and modems. The touch screen part and fact he mentions possible future voice commands just blows me away.

  • this is what Fez went on to do after that's 70's show

  • Why lift your arm when you can use a mouse haha. We are kinda back in the same position with whats coming out today!

  • lol now i know how steve jobs got his idea of touchscreens...

(its cos he used to work for HP)

  • @6littleMERMAIDS - or rather the technical ability behind Apple did.. Steve Wozniak ;-)

  • @TrollingAround

    i agree

  • thumbs up if you love the 80s

  • dont get fascinated by ''touch screens''cause they use same technology as pressing buttons.u just send elecricity to pipes under keys and touch screen there r layers of gold.gold transfers elecricity faster.bottom line...touch screen in reality r a big soft easy to pressed(yet undetected)button

  • @itachiitachi1946 - I had one of these machines - the touchscreen worked with a row of infra-red LEDs across the top and another down the left edge, and infra-red sensors across the bottom and down the right hand edge - touching the screen broke two beams, one vertical and one horizontal - the resolution was awful (cannot rememeber how awful, but I seem to think it could only reference 2x2 character cells).

  • @itachiitachi1946

Today's touch screens are radically different.

  • Ha they would freak knowing the tech we have now! If i would bring an android phone they would be like huh???? What's an android phone!

  • Increíble que desde ese tiempo existía esa tecnología!

  • everytime he touches the screen it sounds like if someone is pressing keys on a keyboard but it could also be the sound of reading from a floppy disc..

  • @marcelkade I think it's made by the computers speakers, as a substitute for the mouse's "click" sound feedback...

  • impressive

  • someone went back in time and ripped off the iPad omg

  • In the future kids will be like " grandpa, what the fuck I's a computer?? The shot is implanted int brain!!"

  • Hoje estou vendo isso num iPad!

  • 6:30 'Personal Mass Storage 1MB'. hmm, even in 1983 few people would consider 1MB as something that would be called 'Mass Storage'. A harddrive was 10MB at this point in time.

  • Throw a brick at it and it'll reconise it too.

  • HOLY FUCKING SHIT LOOK AT THOSE GRAPHICS JAJAJAJAJAJAJ HOMER SIMPSON IS GOD

  • I have to laugh at all these repsonses. Computer tech really hasnt changed all that much. Things have just gotten streamlineed and packed with more stuff, memory etc.. At its core its pretty much the same stuff.

  • Lol our cell phones pwn that computer

  • @jewie27 Your cell phone now sucks compared to what the next generation will have. They will be asking us "How did you manage with an iphone 4g?" Ha

  • Yes, but can it run Crysis?

  • have to wait a long second after touch :P but good technology for this era :)

  • These are fascinating. Thank you for uploading.

  • i love Agilent & HP

  • Micro Floppy...... 1.44MB of storage.....i carry 8Gb in my pocket now

  • 1MB floppy lol!!

  • when i hear touch screen i dont think 1983 i think 2008

  • can it run windows 7 and gta4?

  • lmfao!

  • that thing looks about as nice as george lucas's neck...

  • I still prefer the iPad

  • i came when he pulled out the diskete, too much technology for me

  • Seinfeld?

  • crappy pc

  • So now Apple charges us arm an a leg for such an old touch-screen technology? I mean, how much does it cost to manufacture an iPad in China, $10?

  • @dvamateur iphone 4 costs about 60$ xD and we pay about 1000€ for it...

  • @Messerschmitt262a2a An unsubsidized iPhone is some 800$

  • @ubentu in germany it costs about 1000€

  • its sad... im still useing that computer...

  • HP, a true innovator.

  • perfect system for minecraft!

  • but will it play COD?

  • HOLY DOGSHIT! When is coming to market?

  • @biped19 funny how it failed super bad and 30 years later its starting to catch on cuz "apple" decides its the new thing

  • @biped19 in 2081

  • touch screens suck. my phone is touch screen. when i touch the screen tho nothing happens cuz its a piece of fucking shit. i like a normal keyboard better. fuck you

  • damn touch screen is that old shit why did it take so long for a system like the ds to come out -.-

  • He spends a whole lota time on that roladex.... could it freaking do ANYTHING else? :\

  • @kurisux The fact that the cost of one of these new probably was in the thousands in 1980's money (let alone the price adjusted for inflation) means his primary pitch would've probably been to business owners...

  • @SCSNSE oh yes, I understand that completely! Don't think I don't get just how expensive such a machine would have been! No, I am just curious on if any other applications that made valid use of such a feature were developed, as it seems to be the only thing he shows on an otherwise capable machine.

Then again, I think such touch screen use rather silly, but whatever works.. at that time it would make sense to make the program act like a real rolodex, for familiarity.

  • but! can it blend?

  • you just dont see people caring 3.25 floppies around anymore, I miss those days!

  • @towatchutube123 I just found a stack of empty ones about a month ago...I WAS SHOCKED!!

  • i love how he is smiling like "can you belive this shit? u can actually touch the screen and make the pc respond... this is insaneee"

  • @GTech006 Yeah, sure, would be crazy if they had multitouch and so on that time :D

But even a "pressing hard monitor" is very cool for '83!

  • what the hell???? the cake is a lie!!!!!!

  • a megabyte in 7 months.....nice

  • 'Dial Phone' feature - for the lazy s**ts* who can't dial!

  • Since 20 years, there are no news invention in computer science. Just major improvements from existing technologies ! (Except movment detection maybe).

  • Ahh my iPhone was invented in the 80's!?

  • 1. apparently, that giant clunky monster is a "microcomputer"

    2. YOU CAN GET A WHOLE ENTIRE MEGABYTE ON A FLOPPY DISK!?!?!?!?!?

HOLY FUCK!!!! I GOTTA GET ONE!!!

  • touchscreen in 1983? HOLY SHIT!

  • that printer is sooooo slow!! i cant believe where our technology has gone in a couple years.

  • @mrpooptube1

I wouldn't call almost thirty years "a couple".

  • @DollarTaco

you know what i was saying, but instead of just accepting it and moving on like everyone else, you wanted to start a "youtube fight",.. good luck queer;)

  • See the old EPCOT CENTER in 1982!!!

  • Tehnologija na dodir postoji od 1983 :O

  • @ssssssssss23240

    :P Cool ah?

Ja mrzim Touch Screen.Ja volum dugmiće.Kad zveknem Space,JA GA ZVEKNEM,SA KLINOM I ČEKIĆOM!

  • woooow that printer was soooo slow...I was losin it just watching.

  • a whole new way of scrolling...well done

  • that is like the biggest screen ever

  • The reason no one remembers Atanasoff is because he was at Iowa State University when he did it, ISU never gets respect.

  • I was at the store the other day and the cashier had a computer similar to this one.

  • First COMPUTER WAS MAKED BY BULGARIAN MAN call'd JHON ATANASOV IM BULGARIAN TOO HAVE RESPECT YOU DOGS !

  • @Thehaxorfull1 Static electricity was discovered by a Greek philosopher called Thales of Miletus. So have respect you dog, even though I'm not from Greece!

  • That computer can max crysis.

  • Who the hell uses a Rolodex nowadays? :-D

  • @tngu77 did you not see the date of the video? 198fucking3

  • @domdom87 That was a rhetorical question...

  • touch screen not a new technology? in 1983???!!!!!!! what? pffff.....we should have flying cars & death rays by now.

  • I'd really like to hand these guys an iPad or a TouchSmart.

  • Oh how far we have come.

  • @ut2k4wikichici not that far apparently

  • oh man, what a monitor. F... awesome LoL

  • That's a sick screen.

  • wow! where can i get this computer? how much? how much is shipping? how long is the warranty?

  • The guy with the beard invented the internet, proof is around 7:50
