i was fortunate to see this production in 1992. It's, to date, by far the best show I've ever see on Broadway. Faith Prince; incredible. Nathan Lane; incredible. Peter Gallagher; Incredi. and Josie de Guzman; Incredible. The CD is available and worth the investment.
@carlrob7456 Same here. Saw it a couple of times 'cause I dragged relatives to it. I with I could find Peter Gallagher's performance of "Luck be a Lady Tonight" from that production on Youtube. Anyone know if it's on here?
This is the Greatest version of "Sue Me" I've ever seen. Nathan Lane and Faith Prince top everyone who has ever performed this number, including the original stars of the Broadway show and of the movie. What Spectacular Performances by both of them. Incredible!
@JohnnyRadiohead You're right about that. But his acting - belittled by contemporaries - was also terrific. He knew how to sing the character - he sounds like his heart is really broken - and on camera he was electric. From here to eternity there may never be another Sinatra.
Nathan's name was actually Joe Lane...however when he joined Actor's Equity in NYC that name was not available...he changed it to Nathan and the rest is history. Nathan actually did the role of Nathen years earlier at a very famous dinner theatre in New Jersey called the Meadowbrook...also played the role of Nathan Detroit...I saw the production and it was wonderful!
This was the first ever musical I was in. I was Adelaide. I was in the 8th grade. I can clearly remember sitting at the computer in my kitchen and watching this video over and over and over again. Thank-you, Nathan Lane and Faith Prince, for inspiring the little aspiring Broadway star that was skinny, thirteen-year-old, me.
@xWhiteKidz I will say that Lane's portrayal was much better that Sinatra's in the movie. It seems Sinatra was bothered by not being cast as Sky Masterson, an issue that continues to be a subject of discussion. Sinatra seemed to be "going through the motions." But his performance was nothing really out of the ordinary. Nathan Lane brought much more to this number, perhaps due to the Director, as well.
The role was written way before Nathan Lane had hit Broadway-before he was born. The casting seems almost subliminal--the similarity in the names? Yes, he is accomplished, but others could have done justice to this role as well. What makes me curious is WHY are most of these Broadway performers so shrill and nasal? Is it the "Ethel Merman" influence? And with due respect to Faith Prince, her pertrayal seems more irritating than enduring. Her shrewish interpretation is hard to take.
I love nathan but there is too much comedy in the role. I prefer the way it was written and the cast of guys and dolls in 2009 portrays it MUCH better!!
@MrWhositMagig actually Nathan Lane was born Joseph Lane, but there was another Joseph in his theater class so he decided to go by Nathan because Nathan Detroit was his favorite Broadway character lol and then he finally got to play his dream role on Broadway...at least that's the story I've been told.
'Guys and Dolls' is such a great story. I liked Nathan much more than Sinatra, especially in this song. He's trying to persuade Adelaide not to leave him so there has to be some strength in the voice. Sinatra sang in like Sinatra: a serenade of sorts. Both are funny characters and Faith and Nathan filled their predecessors shoes perfectly!
Thanks so much for posting this. This is what I love about youtube, getting to see treasures that you'd thought you'd lost the chance to ever see again! Just wonderful!

Love it! Love this show. Faith Prince has a voice like a trumpet. In this case, that's a good thing. ;-)

Nathan Lane is good, but Frank Sinatra's Nathan Detroit was the greatest.

@Beckermultimedia You know, Frank Sinatra was great aside from the whole "acting" part of the acting.
