listening to this song takes me back to the 60s. i can see him standing on the Apollo stage crutches under his arms sing till tears fell. kids, this is music.
Superlative heart wrenching lyrics...sang by a true maestro of Soul music, i also like "Where have all the flowers gone" by him...just come back from Soul in the Sun in Tenerife... where this awesome singer was overlooked...i will try to remedy that when we return there in April 2012....thanks very much for uploading it JF Bridge...."Weve all been there i guess!!!
''Mi canción preferida de soul, estos días, es ''It's an uphill climb to the bottom'' de Walter Jackson, del sello Oken. Es una canción tan hermosa, que a veces la pongo tres o cuatro veces seguidas para asegurarme de que la canción realmente existe, que no está solo en mi cabeza.'' Pánic Orfila
Uplifting, sad, moving, spine-tingling emotion. Walter gives it all six barrels in this sublime Northern ballad. His pitch and harmony belittle anything that ever came out of a white man's mouth-and I'm white!
This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard - came across it by chance when watching and listening to various Northern Soul ballads on You Tube - when my 30 year old daughter heard it she said how she wished she had been about in the times when this type of music was listened to - the most beautiful song she has ever heard too - so sad that Walter Jackson has passed away - such an incredible singer.
I actually heard this song from the movie "To Live and Die in LA", with William Petersen. Originally thought it was Bill Medley (cause it does sound similar) but was pleasantly surprised to find out who the real artist behind it really was. Great stuff, thanks for posting.
I "discovered him" by accident in a special grab box my local used record store was mystery boxes of tons of 45s in all different cond (sadly a few cracked and broken) most in great shape, it was a cracked copy of this, and I fell in love in love with it, esp the Tear for Tear flip...need a new replacement copy, I stumbled into his Welcome Home LP for free from my Uncle's and cousins collection in Reading, I was sop excited for the find. Sorry to hear Mr Jackson passed so Long ago so young.
hey does it matter they have given walter jackson the tribute to wigan casino i missed my chance to dance by two /three years by age go on chris freeley
Hey! I was a regular at the Howard (7th &U) from '66-'68 or '69. The "fat boy" Billy Stewart, Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler and Fontella Bass, Don Covay, James Brown, Temptations, Eisley Bros, Major Lance, I can't remember them all.
Then it all ended. I was teaching math at old McKinley Tech (2nd&T, NE) when MLK was shot, and I walked home, H St burning to the south and 14th St burning around me on the way home.
I only discovered him a couple years back. So wish I could have seen him perform and follow his career. Wonderful voice, great songs. Gives me lots of joy listening to him.
just heard touching in the dark on solar it brought back great mems , never heard this number before, but I´ll sure be hearing it again and again. Brilliant
I meant to say another "talented" Jackson! I don't think he's a blood relative of the Jackson 5, although he's from the same general area...who's to say?
Fived and faved this months ago, but neglected to post a comment. Think I should show a bit of appreciation...! Walter Jackson. Magnificent voice. Hard to chose an all time fave soul singer, but he's gotta be in my top 5.
I remember being in highschool and hearing this mans voice. I realized at that moment that love was and is an up hill climb to the bottom. One of these days..I will reach the real top.
Hey too darn soulful lol, that is my e mail addy lol after Morris Chestnut, great minds and that. Ya know I'm not a fan of The Drifter, I must be the only northern fan that ain't I know, but I jus' never really got into it.
Lol, poor nonameneeded07 he must be a rock fan and simply don't get it, lol. Yeah, listen to this shit build like a big soul wave and then crash into that big soulful outburst of a finale. Class!
Walter Jackson passed from a stroke in June,1983. He was only 45 years of age. As a child he contracted Polio but never let his disability stop him from shining. He always pointed out that he was crippled NOT DISABLED. His distinctive classy voice is missed by all of us who appreciates great music.
He truly was one-of-a-kind who certainly didn't get his due. My favorites are "Speak Her Name," "It's All Over," and "I Won't Remember Ever Loving You." Would someone please post these? I'm not technically savvy enough--yet!
first of all,I DON'T APPRECIATE BEING CALLED A LIAR!! second of all,I have a book written by ROBERT PRUTER titled CHICAGO SOUL that states that Mr. Jackson died of a stroke! All of the liner notes on CD's that reissued his material has said likewise. PLUS any search engine you look his name up under say the same thing. MAYBE YOU KNOW SOMETHING THE REST OF US DON'T and if so I STAND TO BE CORRECTED! either way nuff respect to your uncle,HE WAS A GREAT ARTIST! and his death was still a TRADGEDY.
Beautiful track ....goose bumps

I remember, as a young teen, seeing Walter Jackson, at
the Howard Theater in DC. Man, I miss him, Billy
Stewart, the Coasters, the Drifters, the Motown review.
Walter Jackson, crutches and all, what a magnificent talent.
