You cant imagine how special this is. One of the 60s greatest songs, done by legends. This might be one of Grace's last performance as she retired at 50.
I first saw this in '89 when I was 13 and just getting into these artists. I've thought about it occasionally over the years since it was the only time I ever saw Slick sing with Crosby & Nash...thought I'd never see it again...until now! Interesting how in six minutes the three of them manage to briefly erase the memory of their 80s embarrassments with this fine performance...although the mullet is a little grating...Crosby looks delighted to be sober and singing in front of people again.
No, it is well documented that the original was written by Crosby, Stills & Paul Kantner. On the 1st CSN album, Kantner was not given writers credit due to a legal issue. If Kantner was given writers credit it would have tied up royalties etc. The original version was a three person collaboration, but to stir the pot a little, CSN never did it as well as Jefferson Airplane.
Interesting blend of the two classic versions--with Grace sounding much more restrained than on the VOLUNTEERS track. (Of course, she would have to be--she was sort of "outnumbered," and besides she probably felt a little more subdued herself 20 yrs after the JA version. Still I kinda miss the "go ride the music" fade out (which was NEVER part of the CSN version, of course).
Restrained? When was Volunteers issued? Weren't you more restrained in 89 than in 1970? I was. Didja see her back then? I saw her sing acapella with Marty Balin right after Dave Frieberg joined the band (Lakeland Fla)
@FeitenFan You certainly have stirred the pot. Grace has a great yelling voice but no three of the JA people can even remotely compare the beauty and perfection of those three guys singing together. Period.
I was born in 1978.. by the time I was of age to be buying my own music and going to gigs this had been and gone..
Also, being in England we don't get many
'60s' American artists doing many dates.
Saw Stills' solo tour last Oct and have tickets to see CSN in July.
How about instead of sound condescending by the way you phrase your text - you could try nurturing those born after 1975 - since we're the ones still buying the albums.
By 1989 none of these artists had anything to prove. The approach to what is an "old" song is so very fresh in this performance. You can feel what a great time they are having performing together. yeah sure you can go back to the original recordings but this performance has such a sweet, calm magical place for me.
Boy do I agree with your thoughts about their presentation of the song... I too have this clip and I've never listened to it just once. I always have to play it a second time, some days three times:)
As with many live renditions, this one misses the mark. It's nice hearing Grace's voice over, but when you hear the recorded version of "Ships" it makes any live effort good but lacking.
Always love seeing JA & CSN playing together. Like the Dick Cavett show for example. And the collaborative effort on each other's albums. I enjoy the unique combo here, but i can't help but feel the absence of Stills & Kantner, 2 of the 3 writers of this song.
I saw a couple of the 1989 JA reunion shows in the NE and they were real good. The problem with the album was all the extra musicians. Even the live shows had extra musicians which took away from what JA really was. It was a little too "slick" IMO. But Jorma's tunes were good I thought.
This is from a TV show Graham Nash had for a while around 1989 called "The Ring". The idea was like a talk show. Musicians would come into Graham's "Ring" and talk and answer audiance questions and play a few tunes.
I don't think so, I have the whole show that I taped myself off cable and it is called "The Ring". The only people on this show was Crosby, Nash & Slick
What I meant was same series, but a different episode that Gregg Allman appeared on. I taped it off cable in around 1991. At that time it was called 'The Inside Track' with Graham Nash, these and other episodes can be found here on youtube. thanks for this one.
Thanks, I guess they re-ran the series. It was a good series with a lot of interesting discussion with the "Rock Stars". Kind of like the 1970's predesessor Chip Monk's "SpeakEasy" which had a lot of intersting people. I taped (audio only)the one with Bloomfield where he ate fire, literally!!
lovely .. how great the guitars sounded before they all started using those revolting honky nasal sounding pizza loaded abominations .. give me a Martin and a good mike and a sound man any day !
I love CSN singing Blackbird at Woodstock .. the event which of course featured that unsung giant of popular music - Buzz Feiten !
Yep, those Ovations ruined acoustic guitar sounds. They worked from the perspective of being able to play loud on stage without feedback but sound terrible. John Hammond does real well with a SM57 and/or SM58. Give me a mike anytime!! Buzz uses a Gibson Chet Atkins live when with Weckl
very unique. I didn't know they toured together. thanks for posting.

Yes, you're right, they arranged this version. But the original version was written by Stephen.

Everyone was definitely more restrained (SOBER) in 1989 and not tripping out on "purple berries" as they were in the 1960's - 1970's.
It's a great version! Grace really adds something mystical with her vocal performance.
