  • you do realize you dont know how to overclock right

  • this cpu version better then the phenom x4??? buldozer better then phenom if yes about what thxxx

  • @idan124 Better than the original Phenom's definitely, but you're still better off with the Phenom II 9xx CPUs over these to be honest.

FX 4100 is similar to Phenom II X4 CPUs for gaming, sometimes faster, but for video encoding, rendering etc. you'll find Phenom II X4 much faster :)

  • @Aaronage1 thats incorreect. the good phenem iix4's are better then the fx4100 for gaming

  • @spazzardj "similar" and "sometimes faster" ;P

  • @Aaronage1 actually no, the p2x4 is way better rofll

  • @Aaronage1 thx mate realy thx i have the box version of the 955 but i love it is good for me and overclocking fine yea i just figured if does this newer version of amd

:) are better coz 8 cores sound beast after all

  • how to get it to score 7.4 on wei? i got mine to 7.3 @4.6ghz up volts .005 and 2200 nb

  • @cummings4409 same board btw using beta bios

  • why are you giving people advice on OC you dont even know what your doing. you can hit 4.3 ghz on air easily just by bumping up the vcore to 1.385 theres no way your 5ghz overclock is stable seriously why are you even booting up into 5ghz? trying to show off by just getting into windows is nothin. lets see you run prime 95 you would blue screen in 1 second. you can hit 4ghz by just leaving everything at stock settings noob

  • @bfullstar I'm not giving advice, this video isn't a guide...

This video just shows what FX is capable of, it's not meant to show 24/7 clocks. Believe ir or not some people just overclock for fun!!

My 4100 will do 4.3GHz with stock volts, 4.6GHz with 1.465v and 4.8GHz with close to 1.5v. All of these are stable overclocks that you can use daily if you have the cooling to support it, 4.8GHz gets toasty on air but it's doable.

  • Hey Aaron im having throttling issues, i've got a gigabyte 970a-d3 board using F6 award BIOS i think and a FX 4100, can u help me to disable this crap throttling pls? :) thx!

  • @TACOonSTEAM Sure, is F6 the latest BIOS for that board?

Have a look under the Advanced tab in the BIOS for the "AMD APM Master Mode" option, if you disable this the CPU shouldn't throttle anymore :)

  • @Aaronage1 there is the F8 BIOS, is the lastest for my board, the Bios y have right now doesnt have the amd AMP master mode, so what i have to do is update my bios to F8 and disable AMD AMP master mode right? Thx ! :))

  • @TACOonSTEAM Yep! If F8 BIOS doesn't have the option I'd get in contact with Gigabyte support :)

  • is a phenom II x4 better thean this cpu ?

how do you ghat a phenom at 2700 NB - HTlink ??

  • @asacura290 Yeah Phenom II X4 is better

To get the 2700MHz you want to increase the CPU NB Frequency option in the BIOS, you don't need to change the HT Link Frequency :)

  • @asacura290 any voltage change ?

  • hey thers a trick to disabling the throttling crap with the board, HERE IS A TIP THAT WILL HELP YOU ALLLOT!!!, make sure if u got gigabyte 990 board. load up overdrive then enable turbo core, then disable it. this will stop voltige issues and throttling. for some reason this is the only way to disable this funtion. Thnx if u want some vids i got my board OC to 5ghz and runs 61c under load :) just ask ill show ya some more tips. i got AMD 8120, giga 990fx ud5, rpjawX 1866mhz, h100 cooler, 850hx

  • @maxhax2000 Thanks for the tip!

I've got the throttling sorted now, I have a beta BIOS from Gigabyte installed that allows you to completely disable any throttling. The new BIOS has an option for AMD APM Master Mode, disable that and the clocks/voltages are solid :)

Nice build, I'll check out your vids :)

  • @cgdominion you have too lol

  • should i disable cpu max turbo when I am overclocking?

  • Overclocked mine to 4.5Ghz stable using prime95. Unfortunately the cpu still suck. My e8400 core 2 duo was much faster even at factory clock. I ended up selling my e8400 system and switched to AMD thinking the new architectured FX cpu's was going to be better. My specs is Asus Crosshair V mobo, fx4100 cpu, 8GB G-Skill Snyper memory, Hyper 212 evo cpu cooler + arctic silver 5, PC Power & Cooling 610w, MSI GTX 275 dual video cards in SLI, 1 Blu-Ray Player, 6 internal hdd, 1 external hdd.

  • I've an asrock 970 extreme3 and the fx4100 if i disable the turbo boost it isn't trotthling :)

I've it @ 4.6ghz with 1.42v and with cnq enabled!

  • Before this I was happy when my Q9650OC'd from 3 to 4 GHz on clock multiplier x12 :) but jumped ship as intel are to hefty in price.

  • Have you tried disabling cores 1,2 & 3 just using core 0, over on AMD's site they overclocked an FX chip under liquid nitrogen to 8.49 GHz proving plenty of head room and predicted a good 5/6GHzOc on air and liquid cooling. FX4100 Black edition 3.6 w/ turbo 3.9 /turbo turned off 2000 Corsair DDR3 8GB 850w PSU Black edition 6970 XFX 1GB M5A78L-M Asus board (bios 801) Raid 0 x2 Western digital 1TB greens Asus DX2 soundcard Blue ray rw black server casing with 120mm fan Freezer pro 13 h&f 120mm
  • @Scorpion1610 Nice rig!

Yep I did try disabling some modules to hit higher clocks, was only able to achieve an extra 30MHz though lol 5.134GHz :)

  • pump up to 6 GHz and watch it burn ^^

  • fx 4100 or phenom II 960T

  • @cgDominion for gaming***

  • @cgDominion definitly fx 4100. but if u have a little luck u can make the 960t a six core

  • I have my FX-4100 running @ 4.615 GHz (via x23 multiplier), and my Crusial Ballistix DDR3 ram @ Stock 1866 GHz....The CPU has the stock cooler on it, and for the cooling the chip receives, 62 C Max temp is not that bad. The volt on chip are 1.488V - 1.500V, it changes back and forth. I can play GTA IV for hours and render a video, the chip still pulls through. I love this chip, I can't wait for Microsoft or AMD to come out with a patch to help the FX series reach it's full potential.

  • I have a 970A-UD3 with the latest beta bios and have my 4100 running 4.6 very stable with APM, C1E and everything related turned off. Upon a reboot, I can stress test and all four cores will stay at 4.6ghz, but within a week or so I'll catch it throttling down again when the temps aren't going up when I game, even with APM turned off. A simple trip to bios will fix this temporarily. Anyone else with this issue?

  • no i had it to 5.1 at 51 degrees with an h60 water cooler

  • i got an fx 4100 to 51 on amd overdrive stress test for 2 hrs with an h60 only reached 51

  • @283inc do you mean 5.1? or 51 degrees?

  • Best advice I can give, upgrade the BIOS. I had a terrible time with benchmarks on a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 because of throttling. Once I upgraded the BIOS (F5b for me), I could turn APM (Advanced Power Management) off and it no longer throttled my FX-4100 down as low as 3.3ghz and 1.25 volts. I made a screenshot of it @ 1.25v with a 4.1ghz clock, that's the kind of crap that caused blue screens. After the BIOS update, they seemed to sync better, but disabling it was the best option for me.

  • does oc' voids warranty? and how high can i reach with stock cooler? current voltage is 1.36 and sometimes it increases to 1.44... Thx!

  • Hi Aaron, When increase the north bridge frequency from default clock, Windows Aero doesn't work? WDF? I have tried several times. Definitely when I increase the NB. I have tried increasing NB volt still doesn't work. I don't get this.

  • The first time I tried to overclock my 1090t I had the same problem. Every time I wanted to validate my overclock the CPU frequency just went down. I tried puttin' more voltage in the CPU, but that didn't help. I forgot to mention that I have the Crosshair IV Formula and 16GB of DDR3 Kingston 1333Mhz Memory, which default voltage was 1,5V. One day while navigating through the bios I accidentally downclocked my memory to 1067MHz and from the sudden everything started beeing stable. :))

  • @BloodScatter ASUS motherboards have a habit of downclocking with Phenom II X6, I think it has something to do with the temp of the mosfets. X6 CPUs pull a lot of power when overclocked, stresses out even the most high end boards

You might be able to disable it in the BIOS, just make sure you keep your board cool :)

  • for $110 bucks on newegg as of 1\14\12 its pretty damn hard to beat the performance for the money

  • I have the fx4100 and i would like to overclock it to around 4.4ghz with a thermaltake contac 21 cooler. As for my mobo, i have an 760GM-E51 mobo. What frequency/voltage/multiplyer do u recommend? I would also want to know a mild oc frequency for my hyper transport.

    Yours trully,

  • @AdolfHitlerGaming 4.4GHz can by done with 22x CPU multiplier. I'd try between 1.43 and 1.46v (or the closest your BIOS allows). Every CPU and motherboard is different, some need more, some less

You can leave the HT reference clock at 200MHz, this will leave your HT link at 2600MHz (this doesn't need changing) :)

  • @Aaronage1 Hey what budget mobo is best for this processor?? reply asap ty

  • @brunobodoni Anything with a 970 chipset or above, have a look at ASRock motherboards with 970, 990X and 990FX chipsets, they're very well priced and pack a lot features.

Just from a quick look I'd say ASRock 970 Extreme3, well equipped for some overclocking and at a pretty good price point (£60 in the UK, $89 at NewEgg)

  • @Aaronage1 thanks

  • @Aaronage1 thanks for the recommendation!

  • I'm new to over clocking but isn't going over 210 for your bus speed bad for your processor?

  • i'm putting a temp probe into my cpu, using stock fan that comes with it, where should I put the probe so i get the most accurate temps

  • i have the fx4100

    corsair water cooling

    16gb ram

    750w psu

could you tell me what voltage to put it on for about 4.2 with x16.5 and cpumhz 255

  • @sdenn1s It varies from CPU to CPU, but I found my FX 4100 would need roughly 1.4v for 4.2GHz.

Try 1.4v (or the closest your motherboard allows). Run some stress tests and bump it up slightly if you have any stability issues (I like to run y-cruncher and LinX for a few hours, very quick at finding a bad overclock) :)

  • I have had the same problem with my gigabyte mobo, I boot into windows at 4.5ghz on my fx-8150, and as soon as I run prime95 or any other stress test it down clocks random cores to 3.2ghz and it cycles the cores too going between 3.2-4.5ghz and after a couple seconds I get a bsod, I was thinking about getting either the xa-ud3, or the fxa-ud3

  • @unokilo321 Check for new BIOS release, the issue was resolved with beta BIOS for my 990XA-UD3.

With the new/beta BIOS (mine is on F10g) you have new options available. Disable AMD APM Master Mode, Core Performance Boost and C6 in the BIOS and your CPU will not bounce the clocks around, it'll stick at the max clock under load :)

  • @Aaronage1 yeah, I didn't really think about it until I woke up today, it's just downloading the latest drivers and bios right now. thanks for the quick reply.

  • i am running fx-4100 with stock cooler @4.2Ghz and my temps are kinda crazy 70-72C but its pretty stable and havent seen any performance loss or BS anyway so dont know what is the max temp :<

  • @L1ven Good rule with CPU's is

    70+..eeehh ok...

80+ ok this is erm.. ok...I guess

    90+ who! CLOCK DOWN FAST!

    this is in ofc C°

  • Just bought this. Hoping it was worth the money.

  • it's better the fx 4100 or 6100? So quad or six cores?

  • @napoletano52 I"m guessing it all depends on what you will be using your computer for. The CPU that I chose was the 6100. I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to CPU's so I'm really sorry if that didn't help you at all.

  • @napoletano52 I'd go with the FX 6100, the extra cores do help for modern games like BF3, just faster overall for rendering, encoding etc. :)

  • You sound awesome!

  • @milzeh lol thanks :)

  • i also had the throttling down problem but after playing around abit (on a asus m5a97) i only disabled amd turbo, set the bus speed to 210 and the multiplier to 20 which gives around 4.3 Ghz which is not the highest but it will run prime95, is super stable and does not down clock anymore

  • @lolzxDrofl That's a bit warm, might be worth looking at a better cooler. Try to stay below 55c tops :)

  • Comment removed

  • @Aaronage1 i have the h60 :( but i only have the corsair fan on it... and also now its getting better it goes up to 64 degrees for like 5 seconds while stress testing and then gradually drops to 53 degrees

  • athlon ii x4 640 or fx-4100? also just wondering if you need to update the bios to install this cpu to a MSI 760GM-P23?

  • I'm having a problem, im using a gygabyte GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ 970 R and when i set my overclocking on the bios it'll boot fine, but the clocks go back and forth between 3.7 and 4.7. What should i do to keep the CPU from going up and down the clocks?

  • @JordanWilde Make sure you have the latest BIOS, all Gigabyte AM3+ motherboards had a throttling bug that caused the CPU to drop under load. Update your BIOS and you'll find a new option called "AMD APM Master Mode" under the Advanced tab, if you disable this your CPU will not drop to 3.7 any more.

Also, make sure you have Cool and Quiet, C1E, C6 and Core Performance Boost (Turbo) disabled in the BIOS as they may alter the speed too :)

  • @Aaronage1 Thanks for answering, I will try it as soon as i can! :D

  • With stock cooler how much i could overclock it? And what voltage i have to put on? Thx

  • @TACOonSTEAM As a guess I'd say 4.3 to 4.4 would be possible on the stock cooler, you'd need about 1.425v for that overclock but best to find the sweet spot for your CPU with stress testing (might need a little less or more) :)

  • @Aaronage1 Thanks for your well-commented video, very interesting and entertaining.

I'm looking into upgrading my PC to AM3 platform, but was looking into getting the FX-4100 combined with a 990FX motherboard (ASRock) and 1866mhz RAM. As you probably know, FX series CPUs support 2 slots of 1866mhz memory (I plan to run 8gb (2x4gb) of it. Do you have any thoughts or recommendations concerning RAM frequency regarding this CPU? Also, any thoughts on the OCing of FX6100 (in theory)?

  • @Aaronage1 My main PC now is an Intel LGA775 system, E8500 OCd to 3.8ghz with ddr2 800mhz RAM. Further I'm running RAID0 with 2 WD Blacks 640gb's using ICH10R sliced, which altogether makes for a very responsive system, albeit a dual core CPU.

Anyway, I wonder if the 990fx/sb950 mobo and fx-4100 CPU upgrade plus 1866mhz ram (GSkill Sniper 8gb) could promise a good OC capability and would make a difference from my current system. Thanks for any thoughts :)

  • @TACOonSTEAM amd says 4.5 is ok on a stock cooler

  • Are you Vernon Kay?

  • @zXIaDaMIXz LOL

  • Could you post what your final stable volts were @ 4.8ghz for your CPU NB VID control as well as your CPU Voltage Control? Also, if we are using 1600mhz ram, would you suggest a lower HT Link frequency and cpu northbridge frequency. Would something in the 2200-2400mhz range be more stable? Great video btw. Liked and saved under favorites. :)

  • @MrOhthatiswhackk Go for around 2400MHz on the NB, it'll run at fairly low volts (my FX 4100 only need 1.287v for 2400MHz). You can leave HT Link at stock 2600MHz. For 4.8GHz I needed to go up to roughly 1.51v, at 1.487v it's not reliable due to vdroop (the voltage drops a little under load) :)

  • @Aaronage1 Thanks. I'm currently running @ 4.7 as my cpu can post and run @4.8 but isnt gaming stable from what I've tested so far. Been running the HT and NB at 2400mhz. Even to run my cpu at 4.7 stable I have to give it 1.55volts, vdroop to 1.52. Temps seem good though, idles at 28C load is 37C. Any other advice you could give so I can try and squeeze out that last 100Mhz?

  • can a fx-6100 on a gigabyte GA-970A-D3 be overclocked ?

  • @lollipopbob1 Yep :)

  • Why when i put to 8x memory clock and its 1600mhz (my memory is corsair vengeance 1600mhz) after reset it says there have a problem and again put memory clock to 6,x and its run 1333mhz with this motherboard - 990xa-ud3. Can you help me? All other settings are on auto

  • @atisas2 You might need to tweak timings and voltage. Best to check the specifications of your RAM on the Corsair site and manually set timings and voltage, it might need 1.65v for example :)

  • @Aaronage1

Ok i will try. Can you tell me with FX-8120 3.1GHz with CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus or something for same money what ghz i can overclock? 4,5GHz will i can?

  • Comment removed

  • @georgedimgd

    Are you sure?

  • Comment removed

  • I think you're correct about the throttling issue, I have an Asus Board and it works no problem using stock values.

  • this is all gibberish to me i've been looking at this about 5 hours now and this is very annoying i bought saints row the third and i'm crashing and getting a blue screen i want to do all this but i don't know how!

  • @UrbanxAaron This video doesn't make a good guide, more just to show what can be achieved with FX.

    Aim for a 4.5GHz overclock:

    22.5 multiplier

1.45v (or as close to that as your BIOS allows)

4.5GHz 1.45v seems a pretty common overclock for FX, worth a shot. Run some stability tests before jumping in with games, like OCCT or Prime95.

Also, which motherboard do you have? :)

  • I have a 990xa-UD3 motherboard, and to me there is no core performance boost in the bios. because I have a Phenom 955?

  • @MrZvezdand Yes, Core Performance Boost is only available on CPUs that have Turbo (Phenom II X6, FX series) :)

  • @Aaronage1 I was wondering what bios revision you are using? I've heard that the F6e beta bios for the 990xa-ud3 fixed the throttling issues for the FX line.

maybe you can give it a try or read up on it and tell me what you think before i try it.

  • I f I get this for lots of CS5 Audition audio editing?? Will this be fast?

  • @taejamhaha I'm not familiar with audio editing setups so can't judge this CPU for that kind of task :)

  • top video mate (of what I understood anyway!) im new to the pc world im a console and mac user, and im building my first pc for gaming and have asked my finance for this processor for christmas, I was wondering what graphics card you would recommend with a £200 budget from ebuyer. Also would you recommend that I follow your video to over clock this to 4.7?

  • @MrPaulDonohue Thanks! Have a look at the Powercolor 6950 1GB at around £195, excellent cards!

I'm planning to do another video for my 24/7 stable overclock tomorrow, the one I use daily (4.6GHz with 1.46v) hits the sweet spot in terms of power/heat - probably best to use that as a guide instead of this video, much more refined :)

What motherboard are you getting for your new PC? :)

  • @Aaronage1 hi again, sorry for the delay, and thanks for the tip, depending on what i can afford ill either go for the Powercolor 6950 1GB or the 550ti (£100 cheaper and theres a few vids on youtube running BF3 on high with a few ultra settings) like i said im on tight budget but the 2 motherboards im looking at are the Asus M5A78L-M LX AMD Socket AM3+ 8 Channel HD Audio mATX Motherboard or the slightly more expensive Asus M5A78L/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ 8 Channel HD Audio ATX Motherboard

  • @MrPaulDonohue Sounds like a great build! The AMD 7900 series graphics cards are set to launch 9 January, you might want to wait until then as prices for current AMD 6000 and Nvidia 500 cards might drop as a result - worth the wait :)

ASUS M5A78L motherboards are great options, but if you plan to overclock I'd spend a little more of your budget on the motherboard :)

  • Could you run some more benchmarks on this Processor (overclocked) and see how it fares against other contenders like the old Phenom II and Intel core i3.. Thanks, really interested on how it goes. :)

  • @poormansrig I might have a video for that at some point, I have a set of benchmarks comparing to my old 3.45GHz Phenom II X4 but want to run some more before doing anything :)

  • Comment removed

  • Do you recommend this cpu or should i get something else on the phenom series i want it for gaming

  • @dacuban2 get something like 1100t its the best price for a buck , and also second best cpu from AMD ull be happy trust me

  • hey, is the memory clock timings in cpuz the more the better or the other way around?

  • @nomet27 lower is better. The timings are basically the amount of time in clock cycles that an action is delayed, so this could be the amount of clock cycles between acting on a read command (I think that is CAS).

I'm still trying to get my head around all of this to be honest lol, but that is my basic understanding :)

  • Will this CPU Bottleneck the AMD 6950 2GB GPU?

  • @1RainbowMuffin1 Legit Reviews have a review of FX 4100 with 6950, worth checking out to get an idea of how it performs compared to Phenom II and Sandy Bridge :)

  • @Aaronage1 Thanks. :) I am getting the FX 4100.

  • would you say tis cpu is better than te phenom II 960T?

  • @xJL92x 960T is better overall, similar for gaming but the 960T smokes the 4100 when video encoding, rendering etc :)

  • Great video!

  • @ComputerTechTV thanks! :)

  • My AMD ATHLON II X4 630 @ 3.6GHZ score is 3.90pts... this is a shit cpu..because @ 4.7ghz scored 3.83pts.. and the frequencys is very higher than my cpu.. SHITT

  • @MrOvercloker and this in not bulldozer but bull shitt...

  • I bought this CPU for office use .... why the heck would you overclock it XD lol.. its good for fast office shit and excel and shit with a 500mbps SSD.. but for games it will sucks balls anyway .. for that i got I5 760 at 4ghz

  • @Arnoud1987000 It's not a bad gaming CPU by sny means, performs about the same as a Phenom II X4 for gaming, gets a really nice boost from overclocks too

    Let's just say when I'm running eyefinity, the FX-4100 isn't a bottleneck (the 5850 is) :)

  • @Arnoud1987000 i have this cpu and a amd 6970 @ 880mhz and i can play skyrim on highest settings. But the cpu stock cooler is a littebit to hot.

  • WOW That`s a Slow CPU! lol

  • I got lost at around 1:00

  • 960T BE or amd fx 4100? which is worse for gaming, why and how much? ty

  • @ZlotvorSRB 960T definitely, plus you might be able to unlock to 5 or 6 cores :)

  • @Aaronage1 k ty :D

  • @Aaronage1 Nice video man most of the people at the bottom are intel fanboys, and or dumb ass nerds that have not one degree to their name. Don't worry about them nice video man =).

  • @killerv135 thanks! Think I've been lucky to only get a few fanboys comments on this video so far, expected worse lol

  • Here is the new F10D Beta Bios for the ]990XA-UD3!

the Multiplier Throttle down issue is fixed!

flash the bios after that go to: "PC Health Status" - "Hardware Thermal Control" change to DISABLE.

Than you cann change the Multiplier and test ist in Windows with Benchmark. The Multiplier will be stable in full use. no throttling down or something!

    Enjoy

  • the AMD APM Function must be Disabled too!

  • @Morris1581 Thanks for the info! I've been running the F10c BIOS for a week or so (Gigabyte sent me it shortly after uploading this video) and with Hardware Thermal Control/APM disabled it's been running throttle free.

I will give F10d a look, after previous buggy BIOS releases I'm a bit apprehensive about flashing though lol

    Thanks again :)

  • @Aaronage1

in F10C the option "core unlock" is been erased.

in F10D you can enable/disable the single cores from the CPU. but i see no sense in it. mybe you, take a look :)

  • @Morris1581 oh that's nice to see, it's only really useful to people wanting to get high frequency overclocks. I might have to see how high my FX 4100 will clock running with only a single module/2 cores, maybe 5.2GHz? :D

    Thanks!

  • :motherofgod: 5GHZ!

  • I was going to build a family member a decent cheap quad core PC set up. I was wondering if I should go with the Phenom II 980 or this AMD FX-4100? I KNOW people are going to say Sandy Bridge i5, but that's not an option ATM. Not with the extra money the CPU and mobo's will cost. Although that's what I wouldn't mind using if I had the money.

  • @DoomTra1n The Phenom II 980 would be a much better choice, FX 4100 performs between Phenom II X3 and X4, very rarely beating an old Phenom II X4.

980 is a great option if you don't want to overclock (since its clocked at 3.7GHz out of the box/0 but you might want to save a little with 965 if you are overclocking, as they'll both have very similar max clocks :)

  • Glad I saw this - I've got an AM3+ Gigabyte board, and I hope to get an FX to play with over the holidays. Thanks for the detailed vid!

  • 4.7 from 3.6 is a pretty big OC, how healthy is it for the chip though?

  • @Jbay2608 I wouldn't be too worried about the CPU degrading faster with an overclock like that, as long as cooling can cope and stay 1.5v or less should be fine :)

  • So did you manage to get a stability test done, what was the best OC you could get from this little guy?

  • @Jbay2608 With the beta F10c BIOS I've started testing the limits bit by bit. The CPU NB is rock solid at 2500MHz 1.287v, ran Prime95 Blend for over 12 hours, y-cruncher for around the same and a couple of hours of LinX to test that.

Just working nudging up clock speed a step at a time right now, 4.5GHz needed 1.487v to run Prime95/y-crunch/LinX reliably, probably a little more than it needs but limited to 0.50v steps with this motherboard. Will try 4.6GHz at the same volts soon :)

  • @Aaronage1 So it was a BIOS issue then? No more dropping the multiplier when things get tough?

  • @Jbay2608 Yep a BIOS issue, with the F10c BIOS you can disable AMD APM Master Mode which causes the throttling (this option wasn't available with F9 and older BIOS). No throttling with F10c :)

  • @Aaronage1 Nice! I can't get this particular board but I'm gonna go for an M5A97 - Evo, see if I can this chip up to 4.5Ghz for 24/7 use!! I only want it for web browsing/gaming, so I don't care about Cinebench etc!

  • @Jbay2608 Sounds good! Looking back I wish I'd bought an ASUS board, wouldn't have had so many BIOS issues :)

  • I heard that you can unlock it to 8 cores? Is that true?

  • @mitchkappen Haven't tried, the Core Unlock option is available in the BIOS so I'll give it a go, but I think it's only for older K10 processors :)

  • @mitchkappen Just had a look in the BIOS, with the latest update the Core Unlock feature has been removed so I can't test unlocking with my setup unfortunately :)

  • x4 640 @3.6 cinebench score 3.98 without increasing the voltage

  • X2 550 70eur Unlocked to x4 on 3.2ghz i get 3.75 score....LoL

  • @pajo50 My old unlocked Athlon II > Phenom II X4 would score 4 points at 3.45GHz, the FX 4100 needs 4.9GHz to match it.

FX 4100 sits between Phenom II X3 and X4 in most cases :)

  • @Aaronage1

Ye but look at the price of the fx4100 Its waaay too overpriced.....i think it should be priced something like 2-3 core cpu....so in EU its like 95-110eur but it should be more like 50-60eur.... i dont know why are they priced on core count, rather than cpu raw power .... but hey..what can we do...AMD A6-8 apu is better for the same money + you get GPU inside...it does lack L3 but cores are more buffier than FX...

  • @pajo50 definitely, for £90 it's competing against better performing processors in AMDs own line up, such as the old Phenom II X4 and Llano APUs as you mentioned.

This is a solid processor, has excellent overclocking potential and very good gaming performance, but it's only going to be an attractive buy at around £65 to £70 IMO. I was willing to buy the FX 4100 simply to get hands on with Bulldozer, but if I was looking for best perf/price I wouldn't have even considered it :)

  • The throttling problem is common on Many Gigabyte AM£+ Boards. It is because Turbo Core is still enabled (even if it is in the BIOS). You can overcome the problem by installing AMD Overdrive and disabling it in that program.

  • @furmstons Thanks, didn't know the issue was present with Thubans too! I did try that Overdrive trick, it worked but usually caused instability.

Thankfully, after a few weeks of emailing back and forth, Gigabyte sent me a beta BIOS (F10c) which has removed the problem. Got it shortly after uploading this video. The new BIOS added the AMD APM option that ASUS boards had from day one, disabling that along with CPB (Turbo) and C6 clears the issue completely :)

  • I think of getting a new PC, mid-end. Asus M5A97 Socket AM3+ as the motherboard, Corsair 2x4GB DDR3 1866MHz Vengeance Blue rev A memory, an Radeon HD6870 1GB DDR5 256bit. I don't know for what CPU to go for, I want to use main for hardcore gaming. I think about getting this CPU. PS: Any good source for under 50 euros? I think about getting Nox Urano II 530W and a NOX Coolbay Devil Edition as the case, I heard that it has good airflow. Thanks in advance!

  • Nice work, m'man! ;o)

Sorely tempted to buy this processor now, and drop it into a Gigabyte motherboard.

  • i'm currently taking IT in college and it was my understanding that over clocking can be potentially dangerous to your system

    what about over heating?

  • @SofaKingWeTodEd666 Overclocking can cause a CPU to degrade faster, but as long as you stay within a safe voltage range you're unlikely to ever have problems over the lifespan of a typical PC.

As long as you keep the processor below the recommended max temperature you're ok (in the case of this FX 4100 it is 70c) A good air cooler, like the Noctua U12P I use, is enough to keep this processor well below the max safe temp (it only hits around 48c while stress testing at 4.7GHz 1.465v)

  • @Aaronage1 the only reason i said anything is because i know someone in my class that said they got a new computer a couple of years ago, he over clocked it for the purposes of gaming and he burned it out within a year of purchasing it

so if you stay within the voltage and temperature limits it should be fine?

i was just curious because i never over clocked a system before

  • @SofaKingWeTodEd666 The computer burning out could have been down to many things, motherboard, power supply (PSU) etc. are usually to blame first. As long as you stick to quality, brand name components (not necessarily expensive, just a step up from the low end) you should be fine. Most importantly, don't skimp on motherboard and PSU. Cheap PSUs can actually be quite dangerous, not adhering to safety standards for example.

  • @Aaronage1 Cheap motherboards aren't suited to OCing since they can't provide the power required, or have insufficient cooling. Want to look for something with all solid capacitors, and a 4+1 phase power design as a minimum (all these details can be found on manufacturers sites).

It's best to read some OCing guides or read other peoples experiences before jumping in. Each model of CPU has different tolerances, for example, 1.5v is ok for an AMD FX CPU but bad with Intel Core i7 2500K :)

  • very good mate thanx.i bought this cpu yesterday :)

  • @litis1234 Nice! Have you tried any overclocks yet? :)
