I think you are right about it reverting back to the tight curls after it is wet. So with people who have heat damage or who "heat train" their hair to permanently loosen the pattern with heat then I don't consider their hair to be in its natural state. People who use heat w/o permantly changing the natural pattern are natural.
You are still Natural if you apply heat (Being free of harsh chemicals that alter the hair structure) heat is not a harsh chemical and your hair bounces back after a wash.I been Natural all my 18 years on this earth and those products (Pantene & Suave) are for anybody all it does cleanse & condition your hair.Organic is great but it comes with a hefty price.
Real Natural hair to me is hair w/o chemical relaxation. I see what you are talking about with people being die hard Nappies ( I say that with affection I'm a Nappy myself) but to me hair is a choice like clothing, makeup, etc. You should do whatever makes you feel and look the best.
Natural hair is a silly concept. We all use products on our hair to make our hair softer, cleaner, shinier, you name it. Whatever makes you look good and feel good can be natural. White girls don't all have naturally straight shine to the hair and i speak from my life experiance. I iron my hair almost daily and color my hair monthly to lighten it. I'm white but my hair isn't like on the tv but i try to make it look that way anyhow. All women try to look good and we all try too dam hard.
well when black ppl say natural hair they are talking about black ppls hair most of the time...you aren't black and you don't get relaxers to alter your hair like many black women do...so of course the concept of natural hair would be silly to you...
I just went natural. It has only been about a month. I came on youtube to get info on how to take care of my hair. (Everyone has a lot of great info) But in my research I noticed all these Perm vs. Natural and I never knew there was this infighting with our hair. At the end of the day I wanted HEALTHY hair and for me a perm obviously was not cutting it. I love my hair now but my sister has beautiful healthy hair that is relaxed so such is life. Give me healthy hair any day of the week!
We need to stop dogging those who do use heat more than others. Stop putting down the different styles and embrace the different looks that only AFRICAN AMERICAN people can do. I'm still against relaxers, but that still comes with the versatility.
I feel you 100% Not to start anything but I am tired of the Natural Nazis. I am relaxed and currently transitioning. So, I'm on here looking for inspiration and guidance on my natural hair journey. I started this to have versatility. Naturals always boast about the versatility of their hair, yet when one sista puts a flat iron to her hair, all hell breaks loose. Where is the versatility if you can't go from relaxed to straight? What does versatility mean to them??
I could care less about braidouts and twist outs.. I can do that too! We have the same amount of versatility. BUT once you apply heat to your hair.. you have what i can't I cant jump in the shower and have my hair kink. It's like this.. the natural nazis need to calm down. If you are natural straighten, puff, braid out, do whatever you like. Heat is not the devil. Heat doesn't mean I don't love myself. If you are natural and don't use chemicals that alter the curl pattern your natural.
well, this is what i think of when i think of natural hair. Just to go back to chemistry class for a moment...take water if you apply heat to it, it becomes a gas, if you take away the heat it becomes ice, but that doesn't mean it was changed chemically...same for hair, just because you apply heat or put a type of shampoo in it, does not mean it was changed chemically because when it is taken away, your hair will go back to it's natural state (as you said in the video)
If you apply too much heat and straighten or curl/flat iron your hair, you most likely will lose your natural curl. My sister always straightens her hair, which is fine, but its to the point where she doesnt ever leave it curly and she has admitted, her curls are now deformed. It may not be perming her hair, but the amount of damage she has done by consistently straightening is pretty much the same thing. Sad! I always scold her for it too.
in all honesty natural hair in my book is unprocessed air.. that means texturizers( which offer a natural "look") and perms which require a touch up every 8weeks( forgot its been so long)
I believe your hair is natural if you straighten it (although if not careful ,you can damage it). Relaxers, wave nuevos, etc. are all chemicals but regular hair products are not as far as I am concerned. I have vowed to never straighten and of course put chemicals in my hair but I do not knock other naturals who choose to straighten their hair. When I want a new look I buy a wig and feel just fine. That's what makes our journey so unique. You learn your natural hair & your preference. God bless.
totally agree. except i personally always felt weird about wearing wigs. but hey, what works for us is good enough i say..i dont knock the next mans door
I thought My hair was a lil strange cuz ive been transitioning for a year now but the middle front of my hair seems to be straight most of the time... I guess thts a bad spot.. i dunno
to me putting heat to your hair is no different than using a brush or comb.... I agree with you natural hair is if you wash it and it reverts back to the natural state.
Your video made me ask myelf... what if a natural straightened her hair with heat until the hair no longer reverted back to its natural state?
Oh i am relaxed by the way and I think it is more harder to maintain. Yes a comb can slide easily through it, but it is more prone to break and thin out (like mine. My hair is armpit length, but it is thined out and I had to do a major cut. But I am transitioning because I am so sick of my thinning hair. Keep that natural hair girl
I feel that relaxed hair is very easy to maintain. Extremely at that. I am transitioning to natural now.. but when I was relaxed I found various hair forums. Once I learned how to take care of my relaxed hair it went from always shoulder length to almost hitting my bra strap and very healthy and even. Not thin at all. It about learning to take care of it. Natural hair on the other hand is harder only because of the detangling process in my eyes. That is the big one..way too time consuming
Don't fall into that! Even if you change the colour of your hair, the COLOUR ALONE becomes unnatural, NOT the quality! The aim is to take from other hair care individuals on You Tube what appeals to you! Don't take every single instruction as Gospel!
I agree with what you say in your video. Natural hair is when it has been changed PERMANENTLY from its natural state. If you have straightened your hair, when you wash it, it doesn't revert back to its natural state, that is unnatural. Flat ironing is a semi permanent treatment. When its washed, as you say, its back to its originaly quality. The STYLE that you use doesn't determine whether your hair is natural or not, unless the original quality has been permenantly changed.
I think hair is natural as long as the structure of the hair isn't being changed. Heat can actually permanently change the structure of the hair over time. I know people who have hair that won't revert back to the "nappy" texture because of heat overuse.
This is one of the things I learned right here on youtube. That is why I love it here so much. I had no idea heat could have such an impact. Thank goodness I don't use a lot of heat to begin with...Lord knows I don't want to have to do another chop. Thanks so much for your comment.
You know what... I'm glad you brought this up because I was just thinking. I see many Natural women on YouTube. However, they have unnatural hair colors in their hair for example red or etc. So I think being natural is hair that is not chemically straighten or curled.
I agree. I do think it's so great that natural hair is very versatile. But, while we try these different methods we have to pay close attention to how our natural hair responds. Thanks for your comment.
The beauty of having natural hair is being able to wear is straight one day and being able to wear it curly the next....I think its ridiculous saying using heat makes u unatural..get real
I feel what you are saying. When I saw some of the comments I was a little shocked because I didn't have any idea of these different variations. We all have to know what our hair can take and what it can't..I keep the heat to a minimum. But, that's just me. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Girl, we will get through it together. Overall, I really like my hair in it's natural state. I will even admit that I miss it already because I have my kinky twist in right now...LOL
>>>i've been natural almost 4 years, and along with my hair, im growing. my goal was to be 100% natural. what i didn't realize is that my fave conditioner was full of synthetic ingredients. like the label was full of scientific chemical names. yeah, it defined curls and all that good stuff, but my hair was still being maintained by some type of chemicals! like names you can hardly pronouce. how natural is that? so i've switched to all-natural organic products. :)
Hey! I would love to switch to all natural organic products. I have to break this habit I have...I'm just used to using certain products. And also I find that even when a product says it's natural may not even be natural. So, this is going to take some researching..Thanks so much for your comment.
I see what you're saying, but I still think someone is natural if they wear twists and braids. I don't allow my hair to shrink up into an afro. I pretty much keep it stretched because the afro is a nightmare for me. It will be HELL to wash, comb, or style if I allow it to shrink up.
yeah, this is a hot topic. idk "the" answer; because some ppl say that real natural includes not coloring...and from what i've seen, a lot of us do. so whatever. i guess i just say i'm natural to avoid saying the entire phrase "i don't have a perm." *L* u know what i've discovered too? that some naturals who always wear p&c's still look at my hair in its natural state and say "see, u have the face for it. i couldn't wear mine like that!" ain't that tripped out?!
You know..I never thought my hair would look good in it's natural state. I had been natural for years but refused to wear it out that way. And one day I got fed up...and I love it. But, yeah for me...coloring damaged my hair. I got highlights a long time ago and my hair was not strong enough to handle that type of coloring. However, I see some girls color their hair all the time and it never breaks off. I guess it depends on the person. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Happy New Year!
I am 100% natural and from time I straighten my hair, I am still 100% natural. Some people have their own opinion what natural is that is there opinion. In my opinion as long as its not a weekly thing monthly thing, There should be no problem switching on and off from natural nappy, or natural straight. My hair is naturally straight when wet I can braid it down to keep it straight, I just choosed not to. Who determines what for your hair only you.
I feel you on that...you just have to know your hair type. And know how much your hair can handle. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Happy New Year!
Hello, you mentioned that the top part of your hair was straight even after you cut it. I just cut my hair a couple of weeks ago and the top part of my hair is straight too. How long did it take for your hair to kink up. Anyways, your hair is beautiful....
So sorry for the delay. It took about almost a year before it started to grow out wavy. My hair in the front was damaged the most. It might take a while but it will kink up. And thank you for your kind words.
I look so pretty in this vid. Products or putting heat to your hair in my opinion does not mean you are not natural. You are still a napptural you just choose to wear it straight once in awhile or all the time. Straightening your hair with chemicals is unnatural.
thats a good question..to me going natural means just wearing your god given hair and taking care of it without altering it in any way by putting good things in your hair not bad things that may make it weak or break off
Lauriette Thanks for clarifying that there are different variations of "altering"... Maybe I'm old school, but simply not putting a relaxer in your hair doesn't make you natural. If you have altered your texture, possibly unintentially, from coloring/highlighting, or using heat because you were misinformed, then you may find yourself doing a second BC (BC meaning cut the damaged/altered ends off in order to get the healthy shrinkage prone natural texture back. I may do a video response on this.
Wow..I'm learning so much. I didn't even realize heat could alter your hair in such a way. I was pretty sure that coloring was a chemical and could do major damage. I can attest to that, but had no clue about the heat and how it alters the natural state. Please do a response. I'm sure we all can benefit. Thanks a lot.
I first learned Heat = Damage on Nappturality, it is one of the rules, that we do not talk not only about the 'chemical fire cream' we also cannot discuss the use of heat or straightening our hair in any manner. Straight hair is not our natural texture, therefore it is not natural, we'll at least not for me (I have shrinkage prone, tighly curled, kinky coily hair that has the texture or feel of cotton or wool). If you go to my channel, under frequently asked questions, click on #2 & #3 links.
I left this comment before, these mofos didn't add it. BASTARDS!! I said natural hair is "chemical-free" hair. Applying heat don't have jack to do with jack. If a person gets extensions of any kind THAT hair isn't theirs...so, its about perception. People really need to let go of the clique-ish judgments. As far as I'm concerned, my hair is natural because its not a weave...perm or no perm, its MINE! Take THAT natural hair fanatics!
The delete snatchers seem to following us wherever we go..LOL I feel the same about the heat. Unless the woman's hair is temporarily un-natural...lol But, honestly it's up to the woman. As for me, the perm, heat, etc. are harmful for my hair. However, I see women use these products and tools with no bad side effects. That is right girlie...you be naturally unweaved...LOL And yes, I just made up a word. Try it..it's so much fun...hehehehe
MY definition of natural hair has always been hair whose texture and color are unaltered by PERMANENT chemicals. It's the hair your DNA is programmed to produce.
I usually give colored hair a pass though because people don't usually get as upset about color as they do about texture, esp. nappy.
IMO people who get into these granular "natural" definitions are (usually naturals) who need to belong to something they can leave other people out of OR people who don't like nappy natural hair.
You make a great point. I notice that a lot of the natural girls see no harm in the hair coloring. But, when I colored mine that is the most damage I did to my hair. I guess it depends on the hair type. It is accepted. And you feel it may be a clique type thing. Hmmm...you may be right. Thanks so much for your comment.
Gosh your hair is so pretty. Girl when you were talking about washing permed hair and it staying straight i had to laugh. I have permed hair and when i wash mine it goes back to it's natural state lol. Perms don't take too well on my grade of hair so i have to use a lot of gel and blow dry to even get it a tad bit straight and i'm still not there. I love the journey all the natural hair women are going through it looks lovely on you.
Thanks so much Amoure. I'm trying to work it. Wow..you got some strong stuff girl. ugh to gel...I hate gels girl. They tend to dry out my hair. I'm loving the journey too. I feel so free and pride of my kinks. YAY!
no perm is natural. I can't do all that home made stuff :o)natural is hard , people make it look so easy but it's not it hard to take care of. I love my hair like it is but its hard and a lot of work.
I feel you on that. I just don't have a lot of the time to devote to home made stuff at this stage in my life. Maybe one day. And yes girl, it's a lot of work.
I think you are right about it reverting back to the tight curls after it is wet. So with people who have heat damage or who "heat train" their hair to permanently loosen the pattern with heat then I don't consider their hair to be in its natural state.
