this is brilliant! It's so interesting how a single poem can be read many different ways by different readers. When my dad used to read this to me as a kid, he always read the last verse with a very light-hearted tone to highlight the ironic humor of the situation, so that's the way I've always heard it in my mind. JEJ's emphasis on the anguish of the Mudville fans is new to me, but very effective.
There was a counterpoint done to this, many years after Thayer wrote this. It was "I'm The Man Who Threw The Pitch That Struck Mighty Casey Out", not sure who wrote it, but comedian Foster Brooks used to perform it. Does anyone know where a text or audio or video of it can be located?
I have felt and do so even now wish to place the account given by James Earl Jones as the best indeed the definitive account of Casey at the Bat.It is most certainly ably supported by a great recording company in the Telarc Label with its respected Engineers(Bishop) and equally as inspiring is the Cinncinati Pops under the baton of Erich Kunzel The Telarc label has provided some of the greater recordings of the last 30 years. This is like "Round Up" in its accomplishment an excellent recording

Am the only one who finds the music incredibly distracting? Jones' voice is quite enough by itself.

I remember having to memorize bits of this for High School.
Much rather have James E. Jones read it to me though. He can make the act of going to the groccery store sound epic.

Mr Jones could read the McDonalds menu and make it fine art.

JEJ recently turned 80. Thought I'd mention it to those who didn't know.

The force just wasn't strong with Casey that day.
Okay, bad joke.
But I still love James Earl Jones's reading of the poem. :D
