This song was not written by Reg Lindsay (although he does a fantastic version of it). It was originally written and performed by the American, John Stewart.
i first heard reg in fiiftees sing on a phonograph and always loved australias great country singer from reg woodbridge and a great song as well as a song called missing in action which was the first song anyone know that one
i watch the moon walk ,i was in grade three at churchill primary school victoria ,i love hearing this song ,brings back a lot of my child hood memories ,great song
The song was originally written and recorded by John Stewart for his album, "Cannons in the Rain," RCA, 1973. Stewart replaced Dave Guard in 1961 when he left the original Kingston Trio and played with Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane until the trio was disbanded in 1967. Stewart wrote a number of best sellers, mostly for other artists. They include "Daydream Believer," "Gold," and "Runaway Train." Check out Lindsay's version of another Stewart classic, "July, You're a Woman," also on youtube.
Is it just me or does this song have the melody to the song "Love's Been Good to Me" by Rod McKuen which was famously done by Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash?
dad kept us kids home from school in 69 when this took place, and something we will always remember and talk about when family together, rather have these memories as an adult than kids today remembering 9/11 as an adult down the track.
I first heard this played on Johnnie Walker's Sunday Afternoon show on BBC Radio 2 and was amazed to hear him say he would play it in full as they only played a few seconds of it on the same show due to e-mails etc coming in about it - quite unheard of I would think. I think this is one of the most inspiring tracks I have heard in years - I rung a friend and the response was 'how come we have not heard of him? - would love a CD of it in this little ole country called England - any ideas, folks?
Poor reg lindsay had to fake an American Accent to be accepted in the United States.(He is an aussie) but still a good song.they spent so much money on the space program just to prove the system was better than the Soviet Union.Maybe the money should have gone to the poor in the ghettos of the worlds cities.
I bought the album (Lobo - Just A Singer) in the 70s, which included many of his great works eg. Lodi, Universal Soldier, Daydream Believer, Reason to Believe etc.
yeh remeber this song well, and when the whole joint stopped to watch armstrong as well, gives you the chills this does after so long, well done and a true classic,,these days really bore me, i would go back in a flash to 1969 again man !!!!!!!!
1969 & this is Australian Country Music at it's best Eulogistic, wistful,( with straight talking lyrics designed to make one think) with a "feel" reminiscent of "the Seekers" work ; a superb song that is a credit to all concerned
too bad this is not a commentary on the moon landing. instead, if you read it carefully, you'll understand this song questions why things haven't gotten better in the word.
the last line should says it all, did others in the universe put man on Earth with eternal hopes for a better life?
When you think about it, since this song was written by John Stewart and since the moon landing, how has much the world improved?
For all our inventions, we have not made things better
The Americans were first to walk on the MOON,, what a great race of humans,,,they saved us here in Australia in the last War, I love this Song and this one is for John Strewart and you guys, @@@@+++
I didn't note it at the time, but August 5, 2008 was Neil Armstrong's 78th birthday. I wonder if Reg Lindsay was aware of this, and if it had some significance in connection with the day he happened to die.
For example, Jim Irwin, the eighth man to set foot on the moon during the Apollo 15 mission, died as a result of his third heart attack on August 7, 1991, the 20th anniversary of that mission's splashdown
What a lucky child you were to have your father sing to you! Feel yourself much loved by your dad - your children will have such wonderful memories of him.
Hey - I was listening to 2CH the other day (must have been the day that Reg died). I can still vividly recall sitting in the school library at North Curl Curl with lots of other kids waiting for Neil and co to land. Some children's parents were well aware of the significance of the event and they were taken home to watch the big event. It can't possibly be 39 years ago! I didn't know until last week that it was Reg Lindsay that sang it - I always assumed it was some American guy.
One of my all-time favorites. Not just a great song, but its subject is the greatest and most inspiring achievement of mankind. What utter nonsense to suggest it was faked.
My second all-time favorite is 'Flower Garden' by Nick Lampe, a fantastic 1970 song. It didn't achieve much success elsewhere, but was a moderate hit in Melbourne.
There is a Youtube video of him singing it, from a 1971 TV appearance. Don't miss it.
The most FANTASTIC song about the moon landing, When are we going back?

This is an effin' good track, this. NASA enshrined this; but its an inspired production regardless of anything like that.

ranger94538, don't you know this is a song to honour the Astronauts it, as far as I am aware had nothing to do with what you are going on about.
Reg Lindsay will forever be a champion of country music everywhere but in particular right here in Australia.
R.I.P Reg my friend.

This is a John Stewart song. It's a reasonable facsimile of Stewart's excellent version.

Written by John Stewart who also wrote the late 70's hit "GOLD."
Big coincidence. John Stewart and Reg Lindsay died the same year.
Reg Lindsay died on Neil Armstrongs birthday.
There's one for all you numerologists! (-
