i have a messy compound clean up on the gpu.. it's like leaked all over the little contacts that are up and the paste doesn't seem to want to clean. i use alcohol to clean. the system is giving 2 red lights.. it must be the past, i tried cleaning as good as i can but still won't come off.... any suggestions. now the system goes right to 2 red lights as i turn it on no way it over heats like that. and the fan spinns fast right when you turn it on. anyone get this?
@champ0053 instead use proper thermal paste remover do not use alcohol, and put a tiny bit more pressure to clean it. everything should work perfectly after that =]
@fLuXxHD apparently i did get it to go, but it keeps going back to the 2 red lights, it's the dreaded 0013 - memory problem. i've tried the heat gun trick and puting something to push the memory chips down worked for awhile then now it's back to the drawing board. I don't have the equipement to do a reball or proper reflow so looks like this system is going to ebay.
A-lot of people say that you should use Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste on your Gpu/Cpu. But do you think I could use this one I have now? It's called Unick Silicone Heat Transfer Compound, please let me know if I could use it.
EPIC FAIL - bought the repair kit, had my dad (who builds computers for a living) do the repair, followed the instructions to T, three rings of death. Went from two rings to three rings. Waist of $24 on repair kit and silver arctic paste. Do yourself a favor and save your money.

Thanks for your video man. My brother and I did every thing step by step and we fixed our first gen xbox. Its amazing how some thing so simple and the lack of care from Microsoft can ruin your good fragging times. Once again thank you
Nah the problem is that i removed the thermal paste and since then my xbox wont turn on, the power supply turns red not even the red rings show up so if anyone can help :)
@Guglielmo152 You NEED to have thermal paste between your CPU and heatsink and god forbid you don't apply a heatsink because the CPU will fry in literally 10 seconds.
I love how the Q-Tip just warps into this grey dingy cotton ball haha. BTW I cleaned mine to a mirror shine, added ArcticSilver 5 but still wont work...its an E74 Error code
well it's the same thing as 3 red lights when re tighten screw the heatsinks back on very tightly and overheat for 20minuts with the fan on the CPU only. my first try i got green lights but no video so i had to re tighten the screws and overheat this time and it works like new.
@ShawnBecker1 Maybe some.. I dunno, Metallica, Disturbed, Korn, Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, or maybe even a little Slipknot. The list of bands better then Rage is never ending. Just making this clear, I AM NOT trying to bash Rage, just providing OPINION as I am permitted to, as you are to yours.
thermal paste is a paste the you apply to the top of the cpu and gpu cores. This paste creates a firm seal between the heat sinks and the cores and helps transfer heat from the cores to the heatsinks.
I just picked up a 2.5 gram of 'Artic Silver' ceramique compound for bout 5 bucks.
Arctic Silver 5 FTW yea this is the same thing with the CPU in your PC ^.^.
I just got my friends old xbox and it is over heating so I need to take off the heat sinks and such but the prob is >.> I don't have a screw driver that will fix the back plate l
I wouldnt recommend opening your box if its still under warranty. Once you open the box warranty is void. As for cleaning them im a pretty heavy gamer and watch tons of movies so my box is on on the time. I never opened mine for 3.5 years. I thought I would find dust balls and dead mice but to my surprise it was pretty clean inside. A little dust collecting on the motherboard and dirty fans thats about it. i wouldnt bother messing with your box unless you have troubles with it
i don't know i just got the 3 red rings but in your case it's an over heating problem get a can of air at you local stor it's for electronics i herd it's good and purposly for electronics, just make sure you don't have the xbox on doing this because a guy that works at the store says it's explosive/flamable.
2 rings (1-3) means overheating. This process helps with optimizing the cooling for the gpu and cpu. so most likely once you complete this whole process (which includes re-applying the thermal compound!)
Can I use any of these things: Antec Silver Thermal Compound, Zalman CPU Thermal Compound &Silicone Heatsink Paste? These are for CPU so i'm not sure if I can use any of these for the 360. BTW, what is the name of the thermal paste that you used?
Show me how to do it. I can listen to Rage when I feel like.

@MiraGhulag, you can even use vinegar if you'd like. Chemicly speaking, there isn't much of a difference between isopropanyl alcohol and vinear ;-)

There's nothing wrong with using a high percentage (75%+) isopropyl alcohol solution to clean dies/substrates.
