I don't know about anybody else, but 99.95 for a Dutch oven and a live chicken sounds like a damn fine deal, regardless of the seized wine and French instructions.
haha, ppl complaining about his french just further the stereotype. it's also very silly to complain about it, who made you the authority on french or is it your way of feeling superior?
Sorry, coq au vin is technically not "fine french fare". It is now because it got modernized and gussied up, but it was originally eaten by the peasants using old roosters and left over wine lol.
I know this is a gross thing to mention, BUT chicken livers sold in plastic canisters have a lot of blood in with them. You could probably get a pint out of two canisters.
@dazigg Actually most of the liquid is dissolved proteins, much like the juice at the bottom of a steak packaged Styrofoam. Some traces of blood remain, but animals are thoroughly drained before sale. It's not blood.
Depending on who made the enameled cast iron dutch oven, $99 is a steal. It would pay for the dutch oven and everything else would be a bonus. I have made this recipe. It's awesome!
I cooked this up twice. Altons was good but the second time I replaced half the wine with more broth and liked it a little better. Also a little easier on the wallet.
They confiscate the man's wine but don't take the goddamn LIVE CHICKEN!? What is wrong with these customs guys!?

Its not coq au vin unless you use an old bird. The extra flavor makes the dish.

THE FRENCH ,
being true to form, like to make things more complicted than then what it is.
NOT ALL THE FRENCH
but a lot like to take and not give.
This explains why so many French go to the U.S. to learn English and Americans teach the French.
Now when Americans want to learn FRENCH, they just say, "oh it's to hard, we will speak English" and not want to teach English.
HOWEVER, the French are the first to say tht Americans don't want to learn any other languge but ENGLISH.
NOT TRUE!

That's why I tweaked the dish to make in in about 4 hours. And the flavor is still fabulous.

Perhaps he means 'fine' in the sense of 'good'. Alton just likes alliteration.

@RainOnTheWindow so does Mac Summers of Unwrapped. But in that case it's so overused that one has to wonder if it's the writer's idea/
