it is a normal occurence. When airplanes get to a certain class they have a landing weight they have to achieve in order to land the airplane safely and that is why they dump the fuel. It happens everyday :-).
I guess it was fascination at first and maybe a little denial. If it had happened while we were in the middle of the Atlantic OCEAN THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A NIGHTMARE!!!!

I understand the landing weight issue. This means that they put in too much fuel for the flight taken which makes me wonder why. Did they overestimate the amount? Or did they have to take a shorter flight path than the original plan? Or are they landing an unscheduled stop? etc.
No not at all, they fuel like that for planning purposes, and per certain rules that the airlines fall under, they have to have a certain amount for reserves just in case of an Emergency. Think about it if an Emergency were to happen over sea or land and the Airplane had to hold in a pattern for a while, trust me you would want the extra fuel in the tanks. It is all for planning purposes.
Cessnapilot pretty much explained it all. But I also think that maybe they caught a tailwind, or arrived at their destination faster, and had enough fuel for the original time estimated rather than the actual so they had to dump.
@gizzle88 Sorry for the delayed response. We had taken off from JFK for almost an hour and had to return to land at JFK so almost two hours in all but the fuel release was about 30minutes
delta sucks

I love the casualness of everyone while fuel is being dumped from the plane for 7+ minutes.
