To answer your question: No, you don't have to be a religious person to be moral. Religion is simply a mechanism of control. Period. I'm in an ethics class in college and we were just discussing this. Morals and Ethics do not rest on religious belief. Ethics itself must rely on something else such as mutual benefit (utilitarianism) or rights (the Kantian view). I'm an athiest too.

Some people believe, incorrectly, that moral structures are defined by a god and/or the dogma of their given religion. This is rather unfortunate, and rather easily countered by asking: "If your god told you to kill your first born, would you do so?" They would likely answer no, clearly showing they have a moral structure separate from their god.
I always find it funny when religious people say "without religion, what would prevent you from just walking up to someone and killing them?" literally, I've heard that over a dozen times from different people. kind of scary. I usually try to explain to them that I have empathy for other people and I don't need some incentive like a better afterlife or virgins or something to be a decent human being and I don't think a person has a right to take away another's only life. The simple answer is you don't. In fact, believing that morals are divinely mandated is very hypocritical of the people who follow it. What these people are saying comes down to, "If God wasn't watching, I would be a savage". And if God knows that - which he supposedly does (being all knowing), then those people who think morals are divinely mandated are fucked. But in truth, morals are what we make them to live the most beneficial life is what it comes down to.
Theists often say of atheists that they have no morals because the moral compass believers follow is intertwined with their religion. Therefore, when they come across someone who does not have that religious grounding, they think that a moral compass is also not present, because they cannot see that an individual might make up their own mind of what is right and wrong based on personal experiences, or else that since atheists do not subscribe to their set of morals, they must have the wrong set.
Moral codes are very fleeting; as society changes, so does the definition of what is right and wrong. Religious text of all kinds however, are static. Therefore, what was "right" per say in their eyes thousands of years ago, still are. Those who do not adhere to theese, will change their perception of morals over time. Some people believe, incorrectly, that moral structures are defined by a god and/or the dogma of their given religion. This is rather unfortunate, and rather easily countered by asking: "If your god told you to kill your first born, would you do so?" They would likely answer no, clearly showing they have a moral structure separate from their god.

I always find it funny when religious people say "without religion, what would prevent you from just walking up to someone and killing them?" literally, I've heard that over a dozen times from different people. kind of scary. I usually try to explain to them that I have empathy for other people and I don't need some incentive like a better afterlife or virgins or something to be a decent human being and I don't think a person has a right to take away another's only life. However it is true that without religion, there is a lack of morals. Ive been able to live along my own set of morals, but others might not. Theists often say of atheists that they have no morals because the moral compass believers follow is intertwined with their religion. Moral codes are very fleeting; as society changes, so does the definition of what is right and wrong. Religious text of all kinds however, are static. Therefore, what was "right" per say in their eyes thousands of years ago, still are. Those who do not adhere to theese, will change their perception of morals over time. I suspect that this is what they indirectly talk about; that atheists changes their values, and therefore "have no morals" (sorry for any typos; English is a language I rarely use
