People say Pavarotti had the greatest technique for a singer. How many people who hear this man disagree? He's the best technical singer I have ever heard(Caruso's recordings aren't clear). Corelli suffered to find a technique. His difficult journey is our reward. What a great voice!!!!
If he was standing behind poverotti domingo and carerres. When they sang as the three tenors his voice would be all you could hear and they would all turn around and look at him and look back to the audiece and say, god!!! That's loud.
I understand the haters. It's difficult to handle someone THAT good looking and talented (and the fact that he was self taught. What?) without being envious to the point of tears. So keep detracting, I know who MY favorite tenor is...
all garlic and gristle, power and caressing, shades of tone and anguish the way a song like this should be done he actually sounds like he's experiencing what he's singing and knows what he's singing about the perfect voice for this type of song only a great opera voice can do it justice not for some pop mic voice
Another favorite of mine is the early di Stefano recording
wow, bravo, incredible lyrics and music and the touch of a singing master.....now I know I am alive and that music still exists.....no autotune, no Eyed Peas and no numb nuts rapping......just a piano and a man and his voice and a song that will live forever, the heart in conflict with itself.
No matter how often I listen to this version, I never tire of it. I bathe in the loudness and softness of his notes, as well as the highs and lows and the wonderful extensions. What a master singer he is.
Corelli, Del Monaco, Di Stefano, Kraus, Pavarotti. They all pale next to Dominic Chianese!
On a more serious note, even the greatest of the greats are not great every time. Sometimes they fail to grok the spirit of a particular piece. They blast it out full force, when they should have dialed it down.
Del Monaco and Corelli, I feel, both went a little over the top on this piece.
Di Stefano and Kraus, on the other, toned their renditions down, to good effect.
I generally love Corelli's voice and singing. But in the right repertoire. This is not it. Either he had a bad day or his voice was already in decline in 1973, or both, but he sounds just short of awful here. He tries to hide it under lots of mannerisms (which are not necessarily a bad thing in these songs) but he does not in the least succeed. Indeed, it is a crime and sin to say that Bocelli is NOT better than this particular performance, to say nothing of Di Stefano.
You make a good point. I think it's useful to distinguish between technical prowess and artistic choice. Often performers of unparalleled technical prowess make inappropriate artistic choices.
For example, Kiri Te Kanewa, one of my idols, did that on "I Dreamed a Dream." I hate to admit it, but Susan Boyle gave that particular song more emotional impact than Dame Kiri.
Kiri has done a wonderful job interpreting other showtunes, to wit, Gershwin standards.

I always admired Pippo as the greatest in this beautiful song. But seeing and hearing this, I must confess: Franco is in this song the greatest of them all !

Superb!!!!...I have the complete video of this concert. This is and "encore", done after several difficult opera arias!!!! He manages to keep fresh and plenty of energy!!!
He is one of my favorite tenors... not only due to family bonds, but because he is likme a "brigth sun explosion on stage"!!! BRAVOOO!!!!
Compare this rendition to Russell Watson's rendition of the same song. Watson has great expression but does not have the power or passion possessed by Corelli.
Corelli also had a glorious voice. Does anyone know if this concert is on DVD?
@MrPav000123 -- Having a great singer as a teacher does not mean one has a great instrument oneself. Corelli could have tried to teach a duck to sing, and it would still quack :) (not to call Boccelli a duck ..) Boccelli has a pleasant tenor that is best served in the pop/world music genre that singers like Josh Groban and Sarah (ugh) Brightman pursue. He's a more interesting than either Groban or Brightman, and has better chops, but an opera singer he is not.
@sopranosd I agree with you completely! I don't think of Bocelli as an opera singer at all however, I do think that he is a good singer in his chosen genre. I am not a fan of Sarah Brightman or Josh Groban for that matter but I am a fan of Bocelli's.
Self indulgent? This is the tradition. A Neopolitan song. This is the expected interpretation. From the heart, emotional, Italian. And he delivers. DiStefano, DelMonaco -- they know how it's done, just like Franco.
@johnjab - You are absolutely right john. This is a 'canzone Napolitana'. They traditionally convey deep feeling and emotion. Besides, these are Italians composing and singing this great music. Its nothing if it doesn't come from the heart and ooze emotion. Bravo Franco ! Che meraviglioso !
jacksvoice.I think you got it wrong. Corelli was not being self indulgent as you state. He was able to do things with his voice that other great tenors wish they could do.Corelli greatness enabled him to sing like this.make no mistake he was the greatest tenor of them all!
Not at all. There are so many other heartfelt and moving recordings I enjoy. I find this performance very self gratifying. But I'm happy this pleases you.
For what it's worth, I feel that Corelli is well past his prime here. His voice, to my ears, was already on the wane from about 1968. Surely, moving away from verismo to higher-lying material, as encouraged by his mentor Lauri-Volpi was a mistake and led to Corelli's premature decline.
Mr. "littledolphine32", I respect very much your opinion regarding Corelli's Core n'grato, but to say Boccelli is better,is "A SIN!!!!!!!."..please!!!!!!!!....is like comparing champagne to a cheap spumegeante!!!uugghhh!!!!!
@juancristobal60 You re right, Corelli is one of the best of all times with Pavarotti, Carusso... Bocceli is a pop singer not is a tenor he never sung in a opera.
@juancristobal60 I fully agree with your opinion. Boccelli should only sing ballades, but he has tried to show himself as an opera singer... First of all, he has never sung without a microphone. That automatically puts him out of place. I saw a video of Boccelli singing "Pour mon ame" of La fille du regiment... My ears were bleeding.
That's the absolute truth! What a crime,to compare the great Corelli with Bocelli.Unfortunately, some people always talk about thing they don't know nothing about!
People know what they like, so therefore should be allowed to say so. I also prefer Bocelli's version of Core n'grato. I don't think Corelli was in great voice for this particular number. I'm a big opera fan, but since this is not an opera number, it might not be best suited for Corelli. Or maybe an early version would be preferable.
Boccelli overall, can hardly stand comparison to a giant like Corelli. But that is not the issue.
The issue is how he handled a particular song. Core 'ngrato is a song that tends to break apart into disparate pieces unless a special effort is made to keep it together. If one goes overboard by underscoring any particular segment, the song tends to fragment.
The bottom line is that Bocelli clearly kept the song in one piece far better than Corelli.
Well, you can't really critique a song like this because it's really a simple, common song that is sung by people from cooks to cab drivers, Sergio Franchi (whom I still adore) to Franco Corelli. Everyone has their "ear" and their preference, and there should be no discussion. Even Nicolai Gedda, whom I never cared for, sang this well. It's a winner! The people who make personal comments don't really say anything useful in the end. The music says more than all of us together, in any case. Bravo.
I think that of all the great tenors, and he surely is among them, he sang with more, well, let me say, BALLS, than any others I have ever heard. Period!!!!!!
Catari, Catari, Pecchè me dici sti parole amare, Pecchè me parle e 'o core Me turmiento Catari? Num te scurdà ca t'aggio date 'o core, Catari Nun te scurdà! Catari, Catari, che vene a dicere Stu parlà, che me dà spaseme? Tu nun 'nce pienze a stu dulore mio Tu num 'nce pienze tu nun te ne cura Core, core 'ngrato T'aie pigliato 'a vita mia. Tutt' è passato E nun'nce pienze cchiù!
Catari, Catari, Tu nun 'o saie ca'nfin'int' a na chiesa Io so' trasuto e aggio priato a Dio, Catari. E l'aggio ditto pure a 'o cunfessore: I' sto a fuffrì Pe' chella llà! Sto a suffrì, Sto a suffrì, nun se po' credere, Sto a suffrì tutte li strazie! E 'o cunfessore ch'è persona santa, M'ha ditto: Figlio mio, lassala sta', lassala sta'. Core, core 'ngrato T' aie pigliato 'a vita mia.
SALUD MAESTRO!!!
I agree with the gentleman that said that you can not compare Bocelli with Corelli; sorry but Corelli was the best of the best, and even if may Mr. Bocelli has a superb marketing structure, he cannot compare to this tenor (or not to many other true lyric voices...he is a "cross over artist",tht's all)
Why do some people think that their opinion is correct? It is in the EAR! Your ear tells you what is good(TO YOUR EAR) To each his own. I absolutely adore Bocelli. I love Corelli also but not on this piece. Andrea Bocelli sounds FAR better to MY ear. Sorry.
You are so right! One can say "this singer is technically perfect" or something similar to this, but every singers sounds different to each person, which is why some people for example like certain singers and others don't. Good that someone said it out loud - finally. ^^
one of my favorites songs, but with this interpretation, its maybe the only song for me,master Corelli we miss you, you had an incredible and fantastic voice.
People say Pavarotti had the greatest technique for a singer. How many people who hear this man disagree? He's the best technical singer I have ever heard(Caruso's recordings aren't clear). Corelli suffered to find a technique. His difficult journey is our reward. What a great voice!!!!

But was this particular rendition of "Core 'ngrato" the best, or even his best?
I think not.
To hear Corelli at his magnificent best, check out his rendition of "Passione" uploaded to YouTube by "macciboma."

pieritlyon 1 year ago
Compare this rendition to Russell Watson's rendition of the same song. Watson has great expression but does not have the power or passion possessed by Corelli.
Corelli also had a glorious voice. Does anyone know if this concert is on DVD?

Bocelli's teacher was none other than Franco Corelli! Look it up, its true.
MrPav000123 1 year ago
@MrPav000123 -- Having a great singer as a teacher does not mean one has a great instrument oneself. Corelli could have tried to teach a duck to sing, and it would still quack :) (not to call Boccelli a duck ..) Boccelli has a pleasant tenor that is best served in the pop/world music genre that singers like Josh Groban and Sarah (ugh) Brightman pursue. He's a more interesting than either Groban or Brightman, and has better chops, but an opera singer he is not.
sopranosd 1 year ago
@sopranosd I agree with you completely! I don't think of Bocelli as an opera singer at all however, I do think that he is a good singer in his chosen genre. I am not a fan of Sarah Brightman or Josh Groban for that matter but I am a fan of Bocelli's.

Fabulous voice but i feel Franco was a bit over dramatic here but in general as a tenor there's very few who could match him vocally.
bigttim1 1 year ago
Self indulgent? This is the tradition. A Neopolitan song. This is the expected interpretation. From the heart, emotional, Italian. And he delivers. DiStefano, DelMonaco -- they know how it's done, just like Franco.
johnjab 1 year ago 20
@johnjab - Agreed, well said, the Neapolitans are some of the best singers in the world. Then again I'm from Capania so I'm biased
furb393 1 year ago
@johnjab - You are absolutely right john. This is a 'canzone Napolitana'. They traditionally convey deep feeling and emotion. Besides, these are Italians composing and singing this great music. Its nothing if it doesn't come from the heart and ooze emotion. Bravo Franco ! Che meraviglioso !

jacksvoice.I think you got it wrong. Corelli was not being self indulgent as you state. He was able to do things with his voice that other great tenors wish they could do.Corelli greatness enabled him to sing like this.make no mistake he was the greatest tenor of them all!

luiszaoo 2 years ago
For what it's worth, I feel that Corelli is well past his prime here. His voice, to my ears, was already on the wane from about 1968. Surely, moving away from verismo to higher-lying material, as encouraged by his mentor Lauri-Volpi was a mistake and led to Corelli's premature decline.

Mr. "littledolphine32", I respect very much your opinion regarding Corelli's Core n'grato, but to say Boccelli is better,is "A SIN!!!!!!!."..please!!!!!!!!....is like comparing champagne to a cheap spumegeante!!!uugghhh!!!!!
juancristobal60 2 years ago 50
@juancristobal60 You re right, Corelli is one of the best of all times with Pavarotti, Carusso... Bocceli is a pop singer not is a tenor he never sung in a opera.
dclb1942 1 year ago
@juancristobal60 I fully agree with your opinion. Boccelli should only sing ballades, but he has tried to show himself as an opera singer... First of all, he has never sung without a microphone. That automatically puts him out of place. I saw a video of Boccelli singing "Pour mon ame" of La fille du regiment... My ears were bleeding.

That's the absolute truth! What a crime,to compare the great Corelli with Bocelli.Unfortunately, some people always talk about thing they don't know nothing about!
ivansperanza 10 months ago
@ivansperanza
People know what they like, so therefore should be allowed to say so. I also prefer Bocelli's version of Core n'grato. I don't think Corelli was in great voice for this particular number. I'm a big opera fan, but since this is not an opera number, it might not be best suited for Corelli. Or maybe an early version would be preferable.
imlottolady531 7 months ago
@imlottolady531
The bottom line is that Bocelli clearly kept the song in one piece far better than Corelli.
thechinadesk 7 months ago
Well, you can't really critique a song like this because it's really a simple, common song that is sung by people from cooks to cab drivers, Sergio Franchi (whom I still adore) to Franco Corelli. Everyone has their "ear" and their preference, and there should be no discussion. Even Nicolai Gedda, whom I never cared for, sang this well. It's a winner! The people who make personal comments don't really say anything useful in the end. The music says more than all of us together, in any case. Bravo.

Sorry.
littledolphin32 2 years ago
You are so right! One can say "this singer is technically perfect" or something similar to this, but every singers sounds different to each person, which is why some people for example like certain singers and others don't. Good that someone said it out loud - finally. ^^
