  • People say Pavarotti had the greatest technique for a singer. How many people who hear this man disagree? He's the best technical singer I have ever heard(Caruso's recordings aren't clear). Corelli suffered to find a technique. His difficult journey is our reward. What a great voice!!!!

  • that was outstanding. really moving.

  • I watch this everyday, because I like to see god take human form

Bravo Maestro!

  • 76 YOU ARE FULL OF SH....

  • I generally like Corelli's singing, but this is absolutely horrible

  • @76alexantonio Ja may be you prefer Justin Bieber??

  • This is not my favorite tenor @ his best. But then I listen to "Passione," and all is forgetten.

  • this is a great singer, singing a piece perfectly suited for his voice, with the right amount of everything

  • The pianist is so immensely undeserving of Corelli.

  • Outstanding, never to be replaced. People on here have slated me for dissing Paul Potts...

  • Que grande!!!! grandisimo!!!

  • Franco is 52 here.

  • If he was standing behind poverotti domingo and carerres. When they sang as the three tenors his voice would be all you could hear and they would all turn around and look at him and look back to the audiece and say, god!!! That's loud.

  • I understand the haters. It's difficult to handle someone THAT good looking and talented (and the fact that he was self taught. What?) without being envious to the point of tears. So keep detracting, I know who MY favorite tenor is...

  • franco is truly the master. there is something about the tone of his voice that is breathtaking.

  • all garlic and gristle, power and caressing, shades of tone and anguish the way a song like this should be done he actually sounds like he's experiencing what he's singing and knows what he's singing about the perfect voice for this type of song only a great opera voice can do it justice not for some pop mic voice

Another favorite of mine is the early di Stefano recording

  • So loud and so perfect.

  • wow, bravo, incredible lyrics and music and the touch of a singing master.....now I know I am alive and that music still exists.....no autotune, no Eyed Peas and no numb nuts rapping......just a piano and a man and his voice and a song that will live forever, the heart in conflict with itself.

  • No matter how often I listen to this version, I never tire of it. I bathe in the loudness and softness of his notes, as well as the highs and lows and the wonderful extensions. What a master singer he is.

  • I find Lanza does it good too ,but of on napulitano dialect

  • Bester Tenor aller Zeiten.....

  • Corelli was great. That is not in question.

But was this particular rendition of "Core 'ngrato" the best, or even his best?

    I think not.

To hear Corelli at his magnificent best, check out his rendition of "Passione" uploaded to YouTube by "macciboma."

If that doesn't send shivers up your spine, then you're on life support.

  • Corelli, Del Monaco, Di Stefano, Kraus, Pavarotti. They all pale next to Dominic Chianese!

On a more serious note, even the greatest of the greats are not great every time. Sometimes they fail to grok the spirit of a particular piece. They blast it out full force, when they should have dialed it down.

Del Monaco and Corelli, I feel, both went a little over the top on this piece.

Di Stefano and Kraus, on the other, toned their renditions down, to good effect.

  • I love the way Corelli shapes this song. What a vocal miracle. You are sorely missed but never forgotten.

  • I generally love Corelli's voice and singing. But in the right repertoire. This is not it. Either he had a bad day or his voice was already in decline in 1973, or both, but he sounds just short of awful here. He tries to hide it under lots of mannerisms (which are not necessarily a bad thing in these songs) but he does not in the least succeed. Indeed, it is a crime and sin to say that Bocelli is NOT better than this particular performance, to say nothing of Di Stefano.

  • @Spiritakis

You make a good point. I think it's useful to distinguish between technical prowess and artistic choice. Often performers of unparalleled technical prowess make inappropriate artistic choices.

For example, Kiri Te Kanewa, one of my idols, did that on "I Dreamed a Dream." I hate to admit it, but Susan Boyle gave that particular song more emotional impact than Dame Kiri.

Kiri has done a wonderful job interpreting other showtunes, to wit, Gershwin standards.

Bravoooo!!!!. Grazie Onegin65!!!!

  • Corelli was a titan, a giant of the stage, his voice and his presence were unique.

  • è proprio felice chi hanno saputo ascoltare i suoi canzaoni.

  • Oh ,I loved him! Heard him in the terme di Caracallae in Rome in Aida an Trovatore many years ago,but the excitement of his performances is still with me.

  • I am on my feet with intense excitement.

  • simply imbatitivel

  • great performance but i wish i could hear him perform this song with a full orchestra.

  • Agreed

    So what it's gorgeous

  • Agreed

  • corelli is simply the best!!!

  • VERY Cool Video ~ Hearty Congratulations! Perhaps You & Your Viewers Would Also Enjoy Watching On You Tube: 1st Lesson FREE !

    Plinio Ramacciotti

  • Ok, this is beyond perfection. The best "Core 'ngrato" I've ever heard. And how he attacks the first note at the Core 'ngrato-phrase, so visceral, vehement (with corresponding countenance), unusual perfectly controlled triple forte.

  • @weylwargot And that lingering diminuendo...the greatest of all tenors.

  • @parabat7 indeed :)

  • One of the best tenors of all time

  • Franco Corelli, one of the greatest tenor ever, open natural voice full of harmonics and extremely powerful projection that was clearly audible up to the last seat of any theater that he performed. How can you guys judge a tenor with only a song that is not even a Aria? How can you compare different tenors with a siple song?Ignoranti!!!!

  • @19481948able Because we followed his whole career. I was in choruses in Italy - Milano, Verona, Switzerland and Paris - works by Verdi, Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti, Puccini, Bizet, Berlioz, Gounod, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky alongside Franco. He is the best dramatist tenor of them all.

     Genio!!!!!

  • I always admired Pippo as the greatest in this beautiful song. But seeing and hearing this, I must confess: Franco is in this song the greatest of them all !

    Hans NL

  • Absolute patter merchant. So full of it!!!. I'm sorry but no match for Di Stefano when it comes to singing this aria and certainly this is not how it's meant to be sung.

  • ¡¡¡MAGNIFICO!!! Aunque, tambien, adoro la version de Gigli. Pero Esta, Del Gran

Franco, ¡¡¡ME PUEDE...¡¡¡HAY MI DIOS QUE INMENSO CANTANTE...BRAVISIMO!!!

  • I stand and I salute when I hear him.

  • "122bomba "Thanks for your report on MILAN LAVRI, is very good. I heard "Core" ngrato "is beautifully well, I liked a lot, too, the more people that I showed. L MILAN LAVRI, Congratulations . Cordially.

Muchas felicitaciones MILAN LAVRI . Cordialmente.

  • EL GRAN MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI, WAS AND IS THE BEST, STILL NOT PASSED nor equal. It is not about whether light tenor, dramatic or spinto. There has been applied most beautiful voice and masterful in his performances and that is what really counts. Furthermore, very manly, sexy and passionate. also never tune in his performances, making the high notes and perfect belisimamente voice not strip them. All of this is the best reference to consider

  • @pieritlyon

Why nowhere some video-clip like MILAN LAVRI; listen him voice and great video clip: just type his name in youtube search and compare this poooor video!!!!!!

  • 2:09-2:13 completely messes...

  • MERAVIGLIOSO !!!

  • Unbelievable! I was blessed to see and hear him live in 1972 in the opera Aida. He was not in his prime, but he has remained my absolute favorite operatic voice (next to my wife's). Thank God for technology- we can still enjoy such great performances.

  • I think the reaction of the audience says its all.

When one listens to this - we are without doubt in the presence of greatness!

Correlli sets the benchmark for Tenors, and not many will reach his level.

  • I LOVE HIS PIANISSIMOS IN THIS---BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL NATURAL GOD-GIVEN TENOR VOICE! OMG!! BRAVO FRANCO--I MISS YOU!

  • How could anyone not love the extreme power, the passion in his voice..the most masculine top notes ever...I see that it has 22 negative...they got to come from some tone deaf morons

  • Catari, Catari, pecche me dice sti parole amare, pecche me parle e 'o core me turmiente, Catari? Nun te scurda ca t'aggio date 'o core, Catari, nun te scurda! Catari, Catari, che vene a dicere stu parla ca me da spaseme? Tu nun'nce pienze a stu dulore mio, tu nun'nce pienze, tu nun te ne cure. Core, core, 'ngrato, t'aie pigliato 'a vita mia, tutt'e passato e nun'nce pienze chiu!
  • Instead of trying to evaluate the performer -- dozzens of the greates sibngers sung this heavenly song -- why don't you simply close your eyes, relax and feel what is perhaps the most beautifull Italian song ever composed.

  • What a carissma. Shouldn't have rushed Corelli at 2:00 and 2:23.

  • Corelli is without dought the best of the best!

  • Superb!!!!...I have the complete video of this concert. This is and "encore", done after several difficult opera arias!!!! He manages to keep fresh and plenty of energy!!!

He is one of my favorite tenors... not only due to family bonds, but because he is likme a "brigth sun explosion on stage"!!! BRAVOOO!!!!

  • I wish I had a teatcher like him!

I have uploaded my video of core 'ngrato too, check out on my channel.

    Best wishes for all.

  • Compare this rendition to Russell Watson's rendition of the same song. Watson has great expression but does not have the power or passion possessed by Corelli.

Corelli also had a glorious voice. Does anyone know if this concert is on DVD?

    salu2

  • the best of the best

  • Thank you for posting this video of great Corelli. He sings with the heart.

  • Bocelli's teacher was none other than Franco Corelli! Look it up, its true.

  • @MrPav000123 -- Having a great singer as a teacher does not mean one has a great instrument oneself. Corelli could have tried to teach a duck to sing, and it would still quack :) (not to call Boccelli a duck ..) Boccelli has a pleasant tenor that is best served in the pop/world music genre that singers like Josh Groban and Sarah (ugh) Brightman pursue. He's a more interesting than either Groban or Brightman, and has better chops, but an opera singer he is not.

  • @sopranosd I agree with you completely! I don't think of Bocelli as an opera singer at all however, I do think that he is a good singer in his chosen genre. I am not a fan of Sarah Brightman or Josh Groban for that matter but I am a fan of Bocelli's.

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! This just is beyond words!! What a voice - what emotion!! BRAVISSIMO FRANCO!!

  • the best core ngrato

  • INCREDIBLE!!!!!

  • God in heaven.

  • Grande Corelli!

  • why should anyone live after this?

  • Fabulous voice but i feel Franco was a bit over dramatic here but in general as a tenor there's very few who could match him vocally.

  • Self indulgent? This is the tradition. A Neopolitan song. This is the expected interpretation. From the heart, emotional, Italian. And he delivers. DiStefano, DelMonaco -- they know how it's done, just like Franco.

  • @johnjab - Agreed, well said, the Neapolitans are some of the best singers in the world. Then again I'm from Capania so I'm biased

  • @johnjab - You are absolutely right john. This is a 'canzone Napolitana'. They traditionally convey deep feeling and emotion. Besides, these are Italians composing and singing this great music. Its nothing if it doesn't come from the heart and ooze emotion. Bravo Franco ! Che meraviglioso !

  • Love this guy, forever in my heart. L.

  • jacksvoice.I think you got it wrong. Corelli was not being self indulgent as you state. He was able to do things with his voice that other great tenors wish they could do.Corelli greatness enabled him to sing like this.make no mistake he was the greatest tenor of them all!

  • @tenorvoice50 YOU GOT THAT RIGHT........THE GREATEST....How I miss him. The MET has no one like him.

  • @jacksvoice sure, if by self indulgent you mean moving and heartfelt.

  • Sadly not.

  • @jacksvoice Then sad for you.

  • Not at all. There are so many other heartfelt and moving recordings I enjoy. I find this performance very self gratifying. But I'm happy this pleases you.

  • @jacksvoice Idiot!

  • @jplaura02 Wow!

  • grande corelli !!!!!!

  • maybe not in his prime here, but none better!

  • They are not golden years

  • For what it's worth, I feel that Corelli is well past his prime here. His voice, to my ears, was already on the wane from about 1968. Surely, moving away from verismo to higher-lying material, as encouraged by his mentor Lauri-Volpi was a mistake and led to Corelli's premature decline.

  • Great stuff.

  • Mr. "littledolphine32", I respect very much your opinion regarding Corelli's Core n'grato, but to say Boccelli is better,is "A SIN!!!!!!!."..please!!!!!!!!....is like comparing champagne to a cheap spumegeante!!!uugghhh!!!!!

  • @juancristobal60 You re right, Corelli is one of the best of all times with Pavarotti, Carusso... Bocceli is a pop singer not is a tenor he never sung in a opera.

  • @juancristobal60 I fully agree with your opinion. Boccelli should only sing ballades, but he has tried to show himself as an opera singer... First of all, he has never sung without a microphone. That automatically puts him out of place. I saw a video of Boccelli singing "Pour mon ame" of La fille du regiment... My ears were bleeding.

  • @juancristobal60 I do not respect someone who tells such a bullshit

  • @juancristobal60

Some people seem to have their ears stuck in their asses..Boccelli vocally is a joke, although a very charming individual

  • That's the absolute truth! What a crime,to compare the great Corelli with Bocelli.Unfortunately, some people always talk about thing they don't know nothing about!

  • @ivansperanza

People know what they like, so therefore should be allowed to say so. I also prefer Bocelli's version of Core n'grato. I don't think Corelli was in great voice for this particular number. I'm a big opera fan, but since this is not an opera number, it might not be best suited for Corelli. Or maybe an early version would be preferable.

  • @imlottolady531

Boccelli overall, can hardly stand comparison to a giant like Corelli. But that is not the issue.

The issue is how he handled a particular song. Core 'ngrato is a song that tends to break apart into disparate pieces unless a special effort is made to keep it together. If one goes overboard by underscoring any particular segment, the song tends to fragment.

The bottom line is that Bocelli clearly kept the song in one piece far better than Corelli.

  • Well, you can't really critique a song like this because it's really a simple, common song that is sung by people from cooks to cab drivers, Sergio Franchi (whom I still adore) to Franco Corelli. Everyone has their "ear" and their preference, and there should be no discussion. Even Nicolai Gedda, whom I never cared for, sang this well. It's a winner! The people who make personal comments don't really say anything useful in the end. The music says more than all of us together, in any case. Bravo.

  • So expressive.

  • Ho sentito questa canzone centinaia di volte

    Corelli mi ha fatto piangere

    Bravo MAESTRO!

  • I love this!

  • ..si, e avanti tutti - Mario del Monaco!

  • I think that of all the great tenors, and he surely is among them, he sang with more, well, let me say, BALLS, than any others I have ever heard. Period!!!!!!

  • Such a maginificent voice, full of torment and emotion and great beauty!

  • the best singer

  • Was für eine Stimme - großartig!!!

    What a voice - fantastic!!!

  • ME ARREPIEI TODA AKI!!!

    NOSSA!!!

  • FRANCO CORELLI

    BRAVISSIMO!!!

The Heroic Tenor par Excellence!!! came to explore and develop all resources of his Beautiful Voice, the nuances between them diminuendo

almost impossible for the voices of great size.

The Romance and Courage that only he knew how to express.

    Single Master of expression!!!

  • Compare this with Oh Myfanwy the Welsh

version of a mind distressed and tormented over a lost love. Both beautiful

one from the Latin point of view and the other the more restrained Celtic but still lovely version from Wales.

  • amazing... absolutely

  • Catari, Catari, Pecchè me dici sti parole amare, Pecchè me parle e 'o core Me turmiento Catari? Num te scurdà ca t'aggio date 'o core, Catari Nun te scurdà! Catari, Catari, che vene a dicere Stu parlà, che me dà spaseme? Tu nun 'nce pienze a stu dulore mio Tu num 'nce pienze tu nun te ne cura Core, core 'ngrato T'aie pigliato 'a vita mia. Tutt' è passato E nun'nce pienze cchiù!
  • Catari, Catari, Tu nun 'o saie ca'nfin'int' a na chiesa Io so' trasuto e aggio priato a Dio, Catari. E l'aggio ditto pure a 'o cunfessore: I' sto a fuffrì Pe' chella llà! Sto a suffrì, Sto a suffrì, nun se po' credere, Sto a suffrì tutte li strazie! E 'o cunfessore ch'è persona santa, M'ha ditto: Figlio mio, lassala sta', lassala sta'. Core, core 'ngrato T' aie pigliato 'a vita mia.

  • That man was good.

  • Bravo, bravo, bravo!!!

  • I love this song and, I love, more, this singer!

Corelli is, in my opinion, one of the best tenors of all time!

    BRAVO MAESTRO!

  • ... Hear, surely?

  • I love his expression so much. It really touches me. Many thanks again for posting this video.

SALUD MAESTRO!!!

  • BRAVO!!! And thank you so much for sharing! This brought tears to my eyes!

  • Absolutely the best! Brings tears to my eyes! He is pure passion with a god given voice.

  • eaely de stefano is better but a wodrerfull voict

  • great voice and still very handsome on the video

  • Corelli is just magnificient.

    Vince

  • I agree with the gentleman that said that you can not compare Bocelli with Corelli; sorry but Corelli was the best of the best, and even if may Mr. Bocelli has a superb marketing structure, he cannot compare to this tenor (or not to many other true lyric voices...he is a "cross over artist",tht's all)

    BRAVOOO CORELLI!!!!!!!!!!

  • I just love the way you said this. You are absolutely correct. Corelli was one of the

greatest tenors in the history of opera. May

i say Bravo a te, signor Juancristoba!

  • Why do some people think that their opinion is correct? It is in the EAR! Your ear tells you what is good(TO YOUR EAR) To each his own. I absolutely adore Bocelli. I love Corelli also but not on this piece. Andrea Bocelli sounds FAR better to MY ear. Sorry.

  • You are so right! One can say "this singer is technically perfect" or something similar to this, but every singers sounds different to each person, which is why some people for example like certain singers and others don't. Good that someone said it out loud - finally. ^^

  • Well your ear is retarded.

  • impresionante,franco corelli por siempre..

  • one of my favorites songs, but with this interpretation, its maybe the only song for me,master Corelli we miss you, you had an incredible and fantastic voice.

  • His powerful voice is the best rendition of this favorite neapolitan folksong

  • listen to it 100 times and think. Who else can sing like this man?

    Grazie Franco

  • Wow he can sing so softly and vary the volume so much. Grazie Maestro!
