The rennisance was about individual men declaring intellectual freedom from an oppressive Catholic theocracy, not declaring thei independence from God. By throwing off the shackles of theocratic censorship, they were able to finally connect to God by an appreciation of nature, by reason, and by recconecting with the content of the scriptures as the early church did (think reformation). I dont see how he can attack a movement that gives us this freedom.
Without knowing more about the artist or intention, I agree that the concept of painting the king's mistress as Mary is sacreligious (what if we painted Monica Lewinsky as Mary). That being said, I doubt that one can ascertain the philosphy of an entire age from this one example. It seems like Schauffer has a revisionist history influenced more by the culture shock of the 60s sympathizing him with the reactionaries of the rennisance that the movement was anti God. This is a wrong interpretation

Schaeffer's whole life can be summarized in one sentence:
"Everyone's interpretation of Christianity is wrong, except for Francis Schaeffer's."
