Great recording, Great singer. Great career. Wish he made more recordings than are available today. I wish I could find this recording to download. What a truly wonderful American voice of this underrated singer!
SO underrated Gr8 Baritone!!! Who could blame him...'twas Tibbett & him who took turns singing the leading Baritone roles @the Met @1 time! Un4 2n8ly, Tibbett overshadowed this gr8 Baritone whose real name was Richard Bunn.
Robert Merrill credited Richard Bonelli as his inspiration for becoming an opera singer. It's no wonder why. Bonelli had such a vibrant, robust voice! If only there were more baritones singing like this today!
you know , i grew up with the singing of great baritones, and had many many of the great old recordings, but i live in a different country now and turned all my records over to my son. i miss them, thanks for posting this. sadly bonelli is all but a forgotten man now, still one of the greats, thanks.
Thank you very much for posting this! Wonderful voice, but what happend to "Al pari di voi" ? It seems he changed the text inorder to have a different vowel on the Aflat.
He does bear a striking resemblance doesn't he? Glorious voice by the way. Very rich and dark masculine sound. Great top too, especially that G at the conclusion. One of the great baritones somehow didn't achieve as much recognition as his other American contemporaries and sucessors...

It is interesting how much he opens the passaggio much of the time. He really has the sound of a bari-tenor.

@MrCafiero isn't his opening of the passaggio dangerous?

@seektheforce Not for his particular voice type and weight. And he could do either one well, not as a flaw.

@MrCafiero ahhh, because I find his voice to be thrilling.

A great baritone, right up there with Stracciari, Amato and Apollo Granforte. Think of the pop singers (oops!) baritones we're stuck with today,.

One of the greatest baritones ever....listen to the technique and phrasing.

Just compare this dark, rich, thrusting voice to that of any current baritone:) ---

Thank you for posting Bonelli in an excerpt of a live performance--terrific interpretation and good phrasing--un nido di memorie--wonderful.

Yes he looks like him , fine voice but back then it was hard for an American in Italian opera.
