Thanks for the comparison. I too have been with Directv for 13 years and heard the same thing from Dish about the 722 and the 922 being the same except for size of HDD. I'm glad you did this, now no doubt I'm getting the 922.
@jeffrich21 No regrets yet. I go back and forth on how the 922 fares compared to DirecTv's HR series, but I NEVER miss the 722. It's a truly crappy UI that obviously I felt was worth $400 to jettison.
@jeffrich21 Report nine months later...the 922 died on me. The symptom: it just shut down. I'd plug it in again, and it would play for a while and shut down again. I'd moved it into a stack inside a cabinet, so I think it was heat related. Dish replaced it overnight at no charge, but still, a PITA. By far my #1 UI complaint is how hard it is to turn on Closed Captioning. Miss some dialogue? It's an insane 34 button presses to turn CC on and off. Those are my two complaints in the first year.

Can you play the videos that are saved on your external HD on PC? Does the 722 have that function?

@rickless6969 I tried just plugging the HD into a PC, and no dice. No idea if you need codecs or something.
