  • Good God Almighty..."Cissy's voice in the background takes my breathe away and still sends chills up my spine after 40 years". This song needs to be listened to in a dimly lighted room, with a cigarette and God dam cocktail...Crying on your way to pissy!!!!

  • True the Glee Version is amazing to me...but this!.....no words yo!....Aretha was feeling this when she sang it!

  • Masterpiece! That's Cissy Houston doing that operatic background. Safe to say, Whitney's talent was God given and genetic!

  • YOU HEAR THAT BACKGROUND VOCAL SOOOOAAAARR???? good LORD. Angel, the woman sang like an ANGEL

  • - The glee version of this song is so much better!

    - THE DEAD VERSION OF YOU IS SO MUCH BETTER

  • this is the type of song you sit in the corner in the dark.. legs crossed,,head down,, drink in hand.. just shaking your head... unh unh unh.. you just dont understand..

  • NOW WE KNOW, IF U DIDN'T KNOW, WHERE WHITNEY GETS HER TALENT FROM. OF COURSE GOD BUT THIS IS HER GODMOTHER! WHAT A VOICE! FROM A MAN'S POINT OF VIEW, SHE HITS THE HEART HARD WITH THIS ONE!

  • OMG...I COULD CRY!!!!!!!!!!!! THE EMOTION, SOUL AND RANGE IS THIS SONG IS TOO MUCH FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS SONG TO NO END...I have to tear myself away from this video, or I will listen to it all day....<3

  • This and window pane are my two favorite classics by THE QUEEN OF SOUL!A Fan 4 Life From East St. Louis, IL!!!!!:)

  • Aretha Franklin has way too many songs that I love, but this one right HERE, this song right HERE has got to be my all time favorite. She sings it with so much feeling, it's soul at it's best.

  • @darrenmother Like you, I think she sings this song with such feeling - the sentiment of the song might be considered a little old fashioned these days, but not by everyone! When her backing singers go: "Ooooh Wah" it's so beautiful! Such an uplifting song.

  • Fucking haters.aren't you all Bieber's fans?just shut your fuck up and listen it

  • FANTASTIC

  • A CLASSIC!!!!

  • God bless this LEGEND. God bless Aretha... :)

  • Hello, her sister and The Sweet Inspirations, which includes Cissy Houston, are doing the bakground vocals. The high operatic voice in the background is Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston's mother. This is one of my JAMS!!! God Bless!!!

  • Though there are some really good female singers such as Mariah, Celine, and Whitney, Aretha has a style and a range of voice that cannot be duplicated or compared, she is in a class alone, the proof is in this song, and remember, she is also a very talented pianist.

  • Shar Cee

  • oH yeSSSS!!! LORD bLesS>>>AmeN!! its a classic...#speechless#

  • did ya know her sister is doing the backgrounds to this song?

  • @msraymond ...and carolyn wrote it...check out making ain't no way...on the tube! the the horn arranger...is dorkie....still nice results....

  • No one, I repeat, NO ONE in this time and age, will be as legendary as Aretha!

And I KNOW that I'm born in the wrong era...

  • @khairulayul89 Yes there is SOMEONE, I repeat THERE IS SOMEONE already topped Aretha legendary status, Whitney, Mariah, Celine and Madonna, all combine they got the voice, can dance, they got the looks, plus they make money like crazy and the best of all is they are some of the greatest and best selling female artist of all time and their Icon and Legendary status sure over powering Aretha, there!

  • i love this song. i played it all the day. a determined love inspite of differences. sing Aretha

  • i love this song

  • Do you know who is hitting that high note in the background ?

  • @windjammerish That is the one and only Cissy Houton (Whitney's Mother) hitting the very high operatic notes on the background. Mrs. Houston is a legend in the industry. She arranged and sung on many of the background segments for Dionne Warwick, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross and even Beyounce Just to name a very few. She also had a pretty nice solo career.

  • @windjammerish Cissy Houston

  • The woman in this song is dealing with a lousy man but she's not angry instead she's hopeful it's almost as if she's praying. This delivery creates irony. Many of todays songwriters are choosing anger over irony. It's a shame.

  • OMG !!! thanks for posting !! I looked for the longest . DIS MY SHIT !!!!

  • This was music that changed lives. It inspired, caused pain, and made you discover love for yourself and others. I miss and truly wish that they would bring the music that sparks emotions back

  • glee!!!!!!!!

  • Lord this is so true. I have tried, but I have moved on , baby you are a has been

  • everything is "perfect" about this song, her sister in background accenting vocals, music absolutely fitting. Aretha allowing the feelings flow from her soul to yours......

    Classic and hauntingly beautiful.

  • @applespice77 That operatic obbligato is performed by none other than Ms. Cissy Houston.

  • This song was out when Viet Nam War was going on, my brother said that some soldiers would get "Dear John" letters and go off and end their lives.......

  • You have to live these lyrics to sing them - AND to really relate to them. I am living these lyrics now in my life. I hope the man I tried to love will hear this song and feel me singing it to him. In the meantime, God bless you Larry. I'm with you from a distance honey.

  • Its very hard to forget the love of your life. This song brings that person back, not that they've left...... Takes me to that day, in the car when we listened to this song, as i cried , realizing you weren't any good.Im finally not with you but your memory and the love we shared haunts me daily. Ill always love you. but until then ...F.U.I.C

  • epic...

  • Aretha plays an important part of my childhood. Umh! So many good memories! Oh, Cissy did whoooooooooooooooo. That was so sweet and done with excellence.

  • this is just beautiful. thanks

  • The reason this song is so magnificent is her rearing in the church or gospel music. This cadence is sung in local churches by splendid vocalist on a weekly basis. Aretha just happens to be the best of the best of these individual artists no question.

  • mmm I love falling asleep with this song

  • Have you known that the operatic soprano whoop was sang by Whitney Houston's mother?

    BTW I love this song.

  • @arhdwaplusy i thought it was aretha's sister?

  • @dulieman according to wikipedia "whooooooooohoooooooooo" was sung by Cissy:) but maybe i shoudn't have trusted wiki:)

  • @dulieman Miss Aretha's baby sister Carolyn wrote the song.
