As a vegetarian I have to admit my sadness when an animal's life will be ended by a blade but at the very least I"m appreciative when 99% of their life is happy.
You should make a enclosed mobile ground feed cage. Then you can move over garden areas or just around the yard. Combat insects and fertilize at the same time. The coop looks very picked over. Let them graze a bit more and I bet you get more eggs.
Reminds me of my neighbors Beagle jumping the 2' fence around my old hens. He'd never bother the girls and they never bothered him. Funny how the neighbor always knew his dog was in with the chickens. That beagle had a taste for chiken poop which he'd usually throw up when he got home.
We got ours at the end of May and only one is laying right now. They are all allowed to free range for a couple hours a day and scour the perimeter for grass, bugs and dirt most of the time. They have also developed an 'attitude' and no longer are scared of the cat.
actually, jbird, the chickens have 'free range' of my entire property, where they forage for bugs, eat grass, and graze through my gardens.
i would agree that, 'walking around in a barren yard full of chicken poop is most probably less sanitary than the factory breeders' but this isn;t the case here.
Nice music with the chicken hens!! Love it. I think I wil get some chickens in my backyard even though I live in town! What the hell! They're quiet arent they?
depends on the day...i just sold 6 layers through kijiji for $35. i recently bought day old meat birds for $1.15/each from the hatchery. the first birds i bought (the ones in this video) cost $10 for ten.
some fancy breeds go for lots of $ and some people just want to give them away.
My cornishx free run meat birds will be worth $3/pound when finished.
depends on many variables...i think i read somewhere that a layer will eat about 1/4 lb of food per day.... i feed layer pellets, kitchen scraps and suitable food waste from a retsuarant. they also have access to grass and bugs and garden excess. All in, i spend about $12 a month.
heating costs are nil. there is no hydro to the coop.
Now when you say "suitable" what do you mean? Can they eat meat as well as bugs? And how do you keep the place clean, cause I've never really heard of anyone scooping up bird poop (I would think it's impossible). For the record, I'm asking because I'm thinking of getting some to raise when I get older - I don't eat eggs cause for whatever reason I don't like the way they taste anymore, but I know plenty of people who would pay good money for some home-laid eggs.
Lucky you ! I like chicken and can watch them the whole day if I see some. Often they remember me when I was a child and my granma has over 20 like yours in same colour. Lots of work, but back to nature, that's even good.
a chicken that is 20 weeks will usually begin a steady production of eggs. molting can slow/stop the eggs because proteins are used in producing new feathers.
thanks for watching...i realize that chickens need calcium. they were feed layer pellets with calcium supplement and also have oyster shell mixed in their feed. the birds in this video were older and stressed (moved houses a few times) and i think that is what their problem was.
the hens that replaced these ones lay daily...even through the winter with low light levels and temperatures at -20. real troopers!
yes, they fly over the fence all the time...i clipped their wings, but this didn't deter them one bit. The 'pen' area used to be a garden and the fence was to keep out the rabbits. My chickens never leave the yard, though, and if not in their pen, can probably be found digging up my gardens or waiting at my back door for treats.
i saw a video that instructed how to clip the wing feathers , and in the vid it said to make sure you only do one wing . apparently the lopsided wing feathers make flight nearly impossible .
hahaha brilliant ending : )

No predators that fly in or climb in? Or is it, that its "free for all" during the day, then they're in the "hen house" at dark?
